Chapter 9
Romans 9
I say the trueth in Christ, I lie not, my conscience also bearing mee witnesse in the holy Ghost,
GenevaI say the trueth in Christ, I lye not, my conscience bearing mee witnes in the holy Ghost,
That I haue great heauinesse, and continuall sorrow in my heart.
GenevaThat I haue great heauinesse, and continuall sorow in mine heart.
For I could wish that my selfe were accursed from Christ, for my brethren my kinsemen according to the flesh:
GenevaFor I woulde wish my selfe to be separate from Christ, for my brethren that are my kinsemen according to the flesh,
Who are Israelites: to whom perteineth the adoption, and the glory, and the couenants, and the giuing of the Law, and the seruice of God, and the promises:
GenevaWhich are the Israelites, to whome perteineth the adoption, and the glory, and the Couenants, and the giuing of the Lawe, and the seruice of God, and the promises.
Whose are the fathers, and of whom as concerning the flesh Christ came, who is ouer all, God blessed for euer, Amen.
GenevaOf whome are the fathers, and of whome concerning the flesh, Christ came, who is God ouer all, blessed for euer, Amen.
Not as though the word of God hath taken none effect. For they are not all Israel which are of Israel:
GenevaNotwithstanding it can not bee that the worde of God should take none effect: for all they are not Israel, which are of Israel:
Neither because they are the seed of Abraham are they all children: but in Isaac shall thy seed be called.
GenevaNeither are they all children, because they are the seede of Abraham: but, In Isaac shall thy seede be called:
That is, They which are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God: but the children of the promise are counted for the seed.
GenevaThat is, they which are the children of the flesh, are not the children of God: but the children of the promise, are counted for the seede.
For this is the word of promise, At this time will I come, and Sara shall haue a sonne.
GenevaFor this is a worde of promise, In this same time wil I come, and Sara shall haue a sonne.
And not onely this, but when Rebecca also had conceiued by one, euen by our father Isaac,
GenevaNeither he onely felt this, but also Rebecca when shee had conceiued by one, euen by our father Isaac.
(For the children being not yet borne, neither hauing done any good or euil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of workes, but of him that calleth.)
GenevaFor yer the children were borne, and when they had neither done good, nor euill (that the purpose of God might remaine according to election, not by workes, but by him that calleth)
It was said vnto her, The elder shall serue the yonger.
GenevaIt was said vnto her, The elder shall serue the yonger.
As it is written, Iacob haue I loued, but Esau haue I hated.
GenevaAs it is written, I haue loued Iacob, and haue hated Esau.
What shall we say then? Is there vnrighteousnes with God? God forbid.
GenevaWhat shall wee say then? Is there vnrighteousnes with God? God forbid.
For hee saith to Moses, I will haue mercy on whom I wil haue mercie, and I will haue compassion on whom I will haue compassion.
GenevaFor he saith to Moses, I wil haue mercy on him, to whom I wil shew mercie: and wil haue compassion on him, on who I wil haue copassion.
So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy.
GenevaSo then it is not in him that willeth, nor in him that runneth, but in God that sheweth mercy.
For the Scripture saith vnto Pharaoh, Euen for this same purpose haue I raised thee vp, that I might shew my power in thee, and that my Name might bee declared throughout all the earth.
GenevaFor the Scripture saith vnto Pharao, For this same purpose haue I stirred thee vp, that I might shewe my power in thee, and that my Name might be declared throughout al the earth.
Therefore hath hee mercie on whom hee will haue mercy, and whom he will, he hardeneth.
GenevaTherefore he hath mercie on whome he will, and whom he will, he hardeneth.
Thou wilt say then vnto mee; Why doeth he yet find fault? For who hath resisted his will?
GenevaThou wilt say then vnto me, Why doeth he yet complaine? for who hath resisted his will?
Ἐρεῖς μοι οὖν· Τί οὖν ἔτι μέμφεται; τῷ γὰρ βουλήματι αὐτοῦ τίς ἀνθέστηκεν;
Nay but O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus?
GenevaBut, O man, who art thou which pleadest against God? shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus?
ὦ ἄνθρωπε, μενοῦνγε σὺ τίς εἶ ὁ ἀνταποκρινόμενος τῷ θεῷ; μὴ ἐρεῖ τὸ πλάσμα τῷ πλάσαντι Τί με ἐποίησας οὕτως;
Hath not the potter power ouer the clay, of the same lumpe, to make one vessell vnto honour, and another vnto dishonour?
GenevaHath not the potter power of the clay to make of the same lumpe one vessell to honour, and another vnto dishonour?
ἢ οὐκ ἔχει ἐξουσίαν ὁ κεραμεὺς τοῦ πηλοῦ ἐκ τοῦ αὐτοῦ φυράματος ποιῆσαι ὃ μὲν εἰς τιμὴν σκεῦος ὃ δὲ εἰς ἀτιμίαν;
What if God, willing to shew his wrath, & to make his power knowen, indured with much long suffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction:
GenevaWhat and if God would, to shewe his wrath, and to make his power knowen, suffer with long patience the vessels of wrath, prepared to destruction?
And that he might make knowen the riches of his glory on the vessels of mercy, which hee had afore prepared vnto glorie?
GenevaAnd that hee might declare the riches of his glory vpon the vessels of mercy, which hee hath prepared vnto glory?
Euen vs whom hee hath called, not of the Iewes onely, but also of the Gentiles.
GenevaEuen vs whome hee hath called, not of of the Iewes onely, but also of the Gentiles,
As he saith also in Osee, I will call them my people, which were not my people: and her, beloued, which was not beloued.
GenevaAs he sayth also in Osee, I will call them, My people, which were not my people: and her, Beloued, which was not beloued.
And it shall come to passe, that in the place where it was saide vnto them, Ye are not my people, there shall they bee called the children of the liuing God.
GenevaAnd it shalbe in the place where it was said vnto them, Ye are not my people, that there they shalbe called, The children of the liuing God.
Esaias also crieth concerning Israel, Though the number of the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, a remnant shalbe saued.
GenevaAlso Esaias cryeth concerning Israel, Though the number of the children of Israel were as the sand of the sea, yet shall but a remnant be saued.
For he will finish the worke, and cut it short in righteousnesse: because a short worke will the Lord make vpon the earth.
GenevaFor he wil make his account, and gather it into a short summe with righteousnes: for the Lord will make a short count in the earth.
And as Esaias said before, Except the Lord of Sabboth had left vs a seed, we had bene as Sodoma, and bene made like vnto Gomorrha.
GenevaAnd as Esaias sayde before, Except the Lord of hostes had left vs a seede, we had bene made as Sodom, and had bene like to Gomorrha.
What shall wee say then? That the Gentiles which followed not after righteousnesse, haue attained to righteousnesse, euen the righteousnesse which is of faith:
GenevaWhat shall we say then? That the Gentiles which folowed not righteousnes, haue attained vnto righteousnes, euen the righteousnes which is of faith.
But Israel which followed after the Law of righteousnesse, hath not attained to the Law of righteousnes.
GenevaBut Israel which followed the Lawe of righteousnes, could not arteine vnto the Law of righteousnes.
Wherefore? because they sought it, not by faith, but as it were by the works of the Law: for they stumbled at that stumbling stone,
GenevaWherefore? Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were by the workes of the Lawe: for they haue stumbled at the stumbling stone,
As it is written, Beholde, I lay in Sion a stumbling stone, and rocke of offence: and whosoeuer beleeueth on him, shall not be ashamed.
GenevaAs it is written, Beholde, I lay in Sion a stumbling stone, and a rocke to make men fall: and euery one that beleeueth in him, shall not be ashamed.
