Psalms 78
Maschil of Asaph.
Giue eare, O my people, to my Lawe: incline your eares to the wordes of my mouth.
GenevaA Psalme to give instruction committed to Asaph. Heare my doctrine, O my people: incline your eares vnto the wordes of my mouth.
מַשְׂכִּ֗יל לְ/אָ֫סָ֥ף הַאֲזִ֣ינָ/ה עַ֭מִּ/י תּוֹרָתִ֑/י הַטּ֥וּ אָ֝זְנְ/כֶ֗ם לְ/אִמְרֵי פִֽ/י
I will open my mouth in a parable: I wil vtter darke sayings of old:
GenevaI will open my mouth in a parable: I will declare high sentences of olde.
אֶפְתְּחָ֣ה בְ/מָשָׁ֣ל פִּ֑/י אַבִּ֥יעָה חִ֝יד֗וֹת מִנִּי קֶֽדֶם
Which we haue heard, & knowen: and our fathers haue told vs.
GenevaWhich we haue heard and knowen, and our fathers haue tolde vs.
אֲשֶׁ֣ר שָׁ֭מַעְנוּ וַ/נֵּדָעֵ֑/ם וַ֝/אֲבוֹתֵ֗י/נוּ סִפְּרוּ לָֽ/נוּ
We will not hide them from their children, shewing to the generation to come, the praises of the LORD: and his strength, and his wonderful works that he hath done.
GenevaWee will not hide them from their children but to the generation to come we wil shewe the praises of the Lord his power also, and his wonderful woorkes that he hath done:
לֹ֤א נְכַחֵ֨ד מִ/בְּנֵי/הֶ֗ם לְ/ד֥וֹר אַחֲר֗וֹן מְֽ֭סַפְּרִים תְּהִלּ֣וֹת יְהוָ֑ה וֶ/עֱזוּז֥/וֹ וְ֝/נִפְלְאוֹתָ֗י/ו אֲשֶׁ֣ר עָשָֽׂה
For he established a Testimony in Iacob, and appointed a Law in Israel, which he commaunded our fathers: that they should make them knowen to their children.
GenevaHow he established a testimonie in Iaakob, and ordeined a Law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers, that they shoulde teache their children:
וַ/יָּ֤קֶם עֵד֨וּת בְּֽ/יַעֲקֹ֗ב וְ/תוֹרָה֮ שָׂ֤ם בְּ/יִשְׂרָ֫אֵ֥ל אֲשֶׁ֣ר צִ֭וָּה אֶת אֲבוֹתֵ֑י/נוּ לְ֝/הוֹדִיעָ֗/ם לִ/בְנֵי/הֶֽם
That the generation to come might know them, euen the children which should be borne: who should arise and declare them to their children:
GenevaThat the posteritie might knowe it, and the children, which should be borne, should stand vp, and declare it to their children:
לְמַ֤עַן יֵדְע֨וּ דּ֣וֹר אַ֭חֲרוֹן בָּנִ֣ים יִוָּלֵ֑דוּ יָ֝קֻ֗מוּ וִֽ/יסַפְּר֥וּ לִ/בְנֵי/הֶֽם
That they might set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God: but keepe his Commandements,

וְ/יָשִׂ֥ימוּ בֵֽ/אלֹהִ֗ים כִּ֫סְלָ֥/ם וְ/לֹ֣א יִ֭שְׁכְּחוּ מַֽעַלְלֵי אֵ֑ל וּ/מִצְוֺתָ֥י/ו יִנְצֹֽרוּ
And might not bee as their fathers, a stubborne and rebellious generation, a generation that set not their heart aright: and whose spirit was not stedfast with God.
GenevaAnd not to bee as their fathers, a disobedient and rebellious generation: a generation that set not their heart aright, and whose spirite was not faithfull vnto God.
וְ/לֹ֤א יִהְי֨וּ כַּ/אֲבוֹתָ֗/ם דּוֹר֮ סוֹרֵ֪ר וּ/מֹ֫רֶ֥ה דּ֭וֹר לֹא הֵכִ֣ין לִבּ֑/וֹ וְ/לֹא נֶאֶמְנָ֖ה אֶת אֵ֣ל רוּחֽ/וֹ
The children of Ephraim being armed, and carying bowes, turned backe in the day of battell.
GenevaThe children of Ephraim being armed and shooting with the bowe, turned backe in the day of battell.
בְּֽנֵי אֶפְרַ֗יִם נוֹשְׁקֵ֥י רוֹמֵי קָ֑שֶׁת הָ֝פְכ֗וּ בְּ/י֣וֹם קְרָֽב
They kept not the couenant of God: and refused to walke in his Law:

לֹ֣א שָׁ֭מְרוּ בְּרִ֣ית אֱלֹהִ֑ים וּ֝/בְ/תוֹרָת֗/וֹ מֵאֲנ֥וּ לָ/לֶֽכֶת
And forgat his workes: and his wonders that he had shewed them.
GenevaAnd forgate his Actes, and his wonderfull woorkes that he had shewed them.
וַ/יִּשְׁכְּח֥וּ עֲלִילוֹתָ֑י/ו וְ֝/נִפְלְאוֹתָ֗י/ו אֲשֶׁ֣ר הֶרְאָֽ/ם
Marueilous things did he in the sight of their fathers: in the land of Egypt, in the field of Zoan.
GenevaHee did marueilous thinges in the sight of their fathers in the lande of Egypt: euen in the fielde of Zoan.
נֶ֣גֶד אֲ֭בוֹתָ/ם עָ֣שָׂה פֶ֑לֶא בְּ/אֶ֖רֶץ מִצְרַ֣יִם שְׂדֵה צֹֽעַן
Hee diuided the Sea, and caused them to passe through: and he made the waters to stand as an heape.
GenevaHe deuided the Sea, and led them through: he made also the waters to stand as an heape.
בָּ֣קַע יָ֭ם וַ/יַּֽעֲבִירֵ֑/ם וַֽ/יַּצֶּב מַ֥יִם כְּמוֹ נֵֽד
In the day time also he led them with a cloud: and all the night with a light of fire.
GenevaIn the day time also hee led them with a cloude, and all the night with a light of fire.
וַ/יַּנְחֵ֣/ם בֶּ/עָנָ֣ן יוֹמָ֑ם וְ/כָל הַ֝/לַּ֗יְלָה בְּ/א֣וֹר אֵֽשׁ
Hee claue the rockes in the wildernes: and gaue them drinke as out of the great depthes.

יְבַקַּ֣ע צֻ֭רִים בַּ/מִּדְבָּ֑ר וַ֝/יַּ֗שְׁקְ כִּ/תְהֹמ֥וֹת רַבָּֽה
Hee brought streames also out of the rocke, and caused waters to runne downe like riuers.
GenevaHe brought floods also out of the stonie rocke; so that hee made the waters to descend like the riuers.
וַ/יּוֹצִ֣א נוֹזְלִ֣ים מִ/סָּ֑לַע וַ/יּ֖וֹרֶד כַּ/נְּהָר֣וֹת מָֽיִם
And they sinned yet more against him: by prouoking the most High in the wildernes.
GenevaYet they sinned stil against him, and prouoked the Highest in the wildernesse,
וַ/יּוֹסִ֣יפוּ ע֭וֹד לַ/חֲטֹא ל֑/וֹ לַֽ/מְר֥וֹת עֶ֝לְי֗וֹן בַּ/צִּיָּֽה
And they tempted God in their heart: by asking meat for their lust.
GenevaAnd tempted God in their heartes in requiring meate for their lust.
וַ/יְנַסּוּ אֵ֥ל בִּ/לְבָבָ֑/ם לִֽ/שְׁאָל אֹ֥כֶל לְ/נַפְשָֽׁ/ם
Yea, they spake against God: they said, Can God furnish a table in the wildernes?
GenevaThey spake against God also, saying, Can God prepare a table in the wildernesse?
וַֽ/יְדַבְּר֗וּ בֵּֽ/אלֹ֫הִ֥ים אָ֭מְרוּ הֲ/י֣וּכַל אֵ֑ל לַ/עֲרֹ֥ךְ שֻׁ֝לְחָ֗ן בַּ/מִּדְבָּֽר
Behold, he smote the rocke, that the waters gushed out, & the streames ouerflowed; can he giue bread also? can he prouide flesh for his people?
GenevaBehold, he smote the rocke, that the water gushed out, and the streames ouerflowed: can hee giue bread also? or prepare flesh for his people?
הֵ֤ן הִכָּה צ֨וּר וַ/יָּז֣וּבוּ מַיִם֮ וּ/נְחָלִ֪ים יִ֫שְׁטֹ֥פוּ הֲ/גַם לֶ֭חֶם י֣וּכַל תֵּ֑ת אִם יָכִ֖ין שְׁאֵ֣ר לְ/עַמּֽ/וֹ
Therefore the LORD heard this, and was wroth, so a fire was kindled against Iacob: and anger also came vp against Israel.
GenevaTherefore the Lord heard and was angrie, and the fire was kindled in Iaakob, and also wrath came vpon Israel,
לָ/כֵ֤ן שָׁמַ֥ע יְהוָ֗ה וַֽ/יִּתְעַבָּ֥ר וְ֭/אֵשׁ נִשְּׂקָ֣ה בְ/יַעֲקֹ֑ב וְ/גַם אַ֝֗ף עָלָ֥ה בְ/יִשְׂרָאֵֽל
Because they beleeued not in God: and trusted not in his saluation:
GenevaBecause they beleeued not in God, and trusted not in his helpe.
כִּ֤י לֹ֣א הֶ֭אֱמִינוּ בֵּ/אלֹהִ֑ים וְ/לֹ֥א בָ֝טְח֗וּ בִּֽ/ישׁוּעָתֽ/וֹ
Though he had commanded the cloudes from aboue: and opened the doores of heauen:
GenevaYet he had comanded the clouds aboue, and had opened the doores of heauen,
וַ/יְצַ֣ו שְׁחָקִ֣ים מִ/מָּ֑עַל וְ/דַלְתֵ֖י שָׁמַ֣יִם פָּתָֽח
And had rained downe Manna vpon them to eate, and had giuen them of the corne of heauen.
GenevaAnd had rained downe MAN vpon them for to eate, and had giuen them of the wheate of heauen.
וַ/יַּמְטֵ֬ר עֲלֵי/הֶ֣ם מָ֣ן לֶ/אֱכֹ֑ל וּ/דְגַן שָׁ֝מַ֗יִם נָ֣תַן לָֽ/מוֹ
Man did eate Angels food: hee sent them meat to the full.
GenevaMan did eate the bread of Angels: hee sent them meate ynough.
לֶ֣חֶם אַ֭בִּירִים אָ֣כַל אִ֑ישׁ צֵידָ֬ה שָׁלַ֖ח לָ/הֶ֣ם לָ/שֹֽׂבַע
He caused an East wind to blow in the heauen: and by his power hee brought in the South wind.
GenevaHe caused the Eastwinde to passe in the heauen, and through his power he brought in the Southwinde.
יַסַּ֣ע קָ֭דִים בַּ/שָּׁמָ֑יִם וַ/יְנַהֵ֖ג בְּ/עֻזּ֣/וֹ תֵימָֽן
He rained flesh also vpon them as dust: and feathered soules like as the sand of the sea.
GenevaHee rained flesh also vpon them as dust, and feathered foule as the sand of the sea.
וַ/יַּמְטֵ֬ר עֲלֵי/הֶ֣ם כֶּ/עָפָ֣ר שְׁאֵ֑ר וּֽ/כְ/ח֥וֹל יַ֝מִּ֗ים ע֣וֹף כָּנָֽף
And hee let it fall in the midst of their campe, round about their habitations.
GenevaAnd hee made it fall in the middes of their campe euen round about their habitations.
וַ֭/יַּפֵּל בְּ/קֶ֣רֶב מַחֲנֵ֑/הוּ סָ֝בִ֗יב לְ/מִשְׁכְּנֹתָֽי/ו
So they did eate, & were well filled: for he gaue them their owne desire.

וַ/יֹּאכְל֣וּ וַ/יִּשְׂבְּע֣וּ מְאֹ֑ד וְ֝/תַֽאֲוָתָ֗/ם יָבִ֥א לָ/הֶֽם
They were not estranged from their lust: but while their meate was yet in their mouthes,
GenevaThey were not turned from their lust, but the meate was yet in their mouthes,
לֹא זָר֥וּ מִ/תַּאֲוָתָ֑/ם ע֝֗וֹד אָכְלָ֥/ם בְּ/פִי/הֶֽם
The wrath of God came vpon them, and slew the fattest of them: and smote downe the chosen men of Israel.
GenevaWhen the wrath of God came euen vpon them, and slew the strongest of them, and smote downe the chosen men in Israel.
וְ/אַ֤ף אֱלֹהִ֨ים עָ֘לָ֤ה בָ/הֶ֗ם וַֽ֭/יַּהֲרֹג בְּ/מִשְׁמַנֵּי/הֶ֑ם וּ/בַחוּרֵ֖י יִשְׂרָאֵ֣ל הִכְרִֽיעַ
For all this they sinned still: and beleeued not for his wondrous works.
GenevaFor all this, they sinned stil, and beleeued not his wonderous woorkes.
בְּ/כָל זֹ֭את חָֽטְאוּ ע֑וֹד וְ/לֹֽא הֶ֝אֱמִ֗ינוּ בְּ/נִפְלְאוֹתָֽי/ו
Therefore their dayes did he consume in vanitie, and their yeeres in trouble.
GenevaTherefore their daies did hee consume in vanitie, and their yeeres hastily.
וַ/יְכַל בַּ/הֶ֥בֶל יְמֵי/הֶ֑ם וּ֝/שְׁנוֹתָ֗/ם בַּ/בֶּהָלָֽה
When hee slew them, then they sought him: and they returned, and inquired early after God.
GenevaAnd when hee slewe them, they sought him and they returned, and sought God earely.
אִם הֲרָגָ֥/ם וּ/דְרָשׁ֑וּ/הוּ וְ֝/שָׁ֗בוּ וְ/שִֽׁחֲרוּ אֵֽל
And they remembred that God was their rocke: and the high God, their redeemer.
GenevaAnd they remembred that God was their strength, and the most high God their redeemer.
וַֽ֭/יִּזְכְּרוּ כִּֽי אֱלֹהִ֣ים צוּרָ֑/ם וְ/אֵ֥ל עֶ֝לְיוֹן גֹּאֲלָֽ/ם
Neuerthelesse they did flatter him with their mouth: and they lyed vnto him with their tongues.
GenevaBut they flattered him with their mouth, and dissembled with him with their tongue.
וַ/יְפַתּ֥וּ/הוּ בְּ/פִי/הֶ֑ם וּ֝/בִ/לְשׁוֹנָ֗/ם יְכַזְּבוּ לֽ/וֹ
For their heart was not right with him: neither were they stedfast in his couenant.
GenevaFor their heart was not vpright with him: neither were they faithfull in his couenant.
וְ֭/לִבָּ/ם לֹא נָכ֣וֹן עִמּ֑/וֹ וְ/לֹ֥א נֶ֝אֶמְנ֗וּ בִּ/בְרִיתֽ/וֹ
But hee being full of compassion, forgaue their iniquity, and destroyed them not; yea many a time turned he his anger away, and did not stirre vp all his wrath.
GenevaYet he being merciful forgaue their iniquitie, and destroied them not, but oft times called backe his anger, and did not stirre vp all his wrath.
וְ/ה֤וּא רַח֨וּם יְכַפֵּ֥ר עָוֺן֮ וְֽ/לֹא יַ֫שְׁחִ֥ית וְ֭/הִרְבָּה לְ/הָשִׁ֣יב אַפּ֑/וֹ וְ/לֹֽא יָ֝עִיר כָּל חֲמָתֽ/וֹ
For he remembred that they were but flesh; a wind that passeth away, and commeth not againe.
GenevaFor he remembered that they were flesh: yea, a winde that passeth and commeth not againe.
וַ֭/יִּזְכֹּר כִּי בָשָׂ֣ר הֵ֑מָּה ר֥וּחַ ה֝וֹלֵ֗ךְ וְ/לֹ֣א יָשֽׁוּב
How oft did they prouoke him in the wildernesse: and grieue him in the desert?
GenevaHow oft did they prouoke him in the wildernes? and grieue him in the desert?
כַּ֭/מָּה יַמְר֣וּ/הוּ בַ/מִּדְבָּ֑ר יַ֝עֲצִיב֗וּ/הוּ בִּֽ/ישִׁימֽוֹן
Yea they turned backe and tempted God: and limited the holy one of Israel.

וַ/יָּשׁ֣וּבוּ וַ/יְנַסּ֣וּ אֵ֑ל וּ/קְד֖וֹשׁ יִשְׂרָאֵ֣ל הִתְווּ
They remembred not his hand: nor the day when hee deliuered them from the enemie:
GenevaThey remembered not his hand, nor the day when he deliuered them from the enemie,
לֹא זָכְר֥וּ אֶת יָד֑/וֹ י֝֗וֹם אֲֽשֶׁר פָּדָ֥/ם מִנִּי צָֽר
How he had wrought his signes in Egypt: and his wonders in the field of Zoan:

אֲשֶׁר שָׂ֣ם בְּ֭/מִצְרַיִם אֹֽתוֹתָ֑י/ו וּ֝/מוֹפְתָ֗י/ו בִּ/שְׂדֵה צֹֽעַן
And had turned their riuers into blood: and their flouds, that they could not drinke.

Hee sent diuers sorts of flies among them, which deuoured them: and frogges which destroyed them.

יְשַׁלַּ֬ח בָּ/הֶ֣ם עָ֭רֹב וַ/יֹּאכְלֵ֑/ם וּ֝/צְפַרְדֵּ֗עַ וַ/תַּשְׁחִיתֵֽ/ם
He gaue also their increase vnto the caterpiller: and their labour vnto the locust.

וַ/יִּתֵּ֣ן לֶ/חָסִ֣יל יְבוּלָ֑/ם וִֽ֝/יגִיעָ֗/ם לָ/אַרְבֶּֽה
He destroyed their vines with haile: and their Sycomore trees with frost.
GenevaHe destroied their vines with haile, and their wilde figge trees with the hailestone.
יַהֲרֹ֣ג בַּ/בָּרָ֣ד גַּפְנָ֑/ם וְ֝/שִׁקְמוֹתָ֗/ם בַּֽ/חֲנָמַֽל
He gaue vp their cattel also to the haile: and their flockes to hot thunder-bolts.

וַ/יַּסְגֵּ֣ר לַ/בָּרָ֣ד בְּעִירָ֑/ם וּ֝/מִקְנֵי/הֶ֗ם לָ/רְשָׁפִֽים
He cast vpon them the fiercenesse of his anger, wrath and indignation, and trouble: by sending euill angels among them.

יְשַׁלַּח בָּ֨/ם חֲר֬וֹן אַפּ֗/וֹ עֶבְרָ֣ה וָ/זַ֣עַם וְ/צָרָ֑ה מִ֝שְׁלַ֗חַת מַלְאֲכֵ֥י רָעִֽים
He made a way to his anger, hee spared not their soule from death: but gaue their life ouer to the pestilence.

יְפַלֵּ֥ס נָתִ֗יב לְ/אַ֫פּ֥/וֹ לֹא חָשַׂ֣ךְ מִ/מָּ֣וֶת נַפְשָׁ֑/ם וְ֝/חַיָּתָ֗/ם לַ/דֶּ֥בֶר הִסְגִּֽיר
And smote all the first borne in Egypt: the chiefe of their strength in the tabernacles of Ham:

וַ/יַּ֣ךְ כָּל בְּכ֣וֹר בְּ/מִצְרָ֑יִם רֵאשִׁ֥ית א֝וֹנִ֗ים בְּ/אָהֳלֵי חָֽם
But made his owne people to goe forth like sheepe: and guided them in the wildernesse like a flocke.

וַ/יַּסַּ֣ע כַּ/צֹּ֣אן עַמּ֑/וֹ וַֽ/יְנַהֲגֵ֥/ם כַּ֝/עֵ֗דֶר בַּ/מִּדְבָּֽר
And he led them on safely, so that they feared not: but the sea ouerwhelmed their enemies.
GenevaYea, he caried them out safely, and they feared not, and the Sea couered their enemies.
וַ/יַּנְחֵ֣/ם לָ֭/בֶטַח וְ/לֹ֣א פָחָ֑דוּ וְ/אֶת א֝וֹיְבֵי/הֶ֗ם כִּסָּ֥ה הַ/יָּֽם
And he brought them to the border of his sanctuarie: euen to this mountaine which his right hand had purchased.

וַ֭/יְבִיאֵ/ם אֶל גְּב֣וּל קָדְשׁ֑/וֹ הַר זֶ֝֗ה קָנְתָ֥ה יְמִינֽ/וֹ
He cast out the heathen also before them, and diuided them an inheritance by line: and made the tribes of Israel to dwell in their tents.

Yet they tempted and prouoked the most high God: and kept not his testimonies:

וַ/יְנַסּ֣וּ וַ֭/יַּמְרוּ אֶת אֱלֹהִ֣ים עֶלְי֑וֹן וְ֝/עֵדוֹתָ֗י/ו לֹ֣א שָׁמָֽרוּ
But turned backe, and dealt vnfaithfully like their fathers: they were turned aside like a deceitfull bowe.

וַ/יִּסֹּ֣גוּ וַֽ֭/יִּבְגְּדוּ כַּ/אֲבוֹתָ֑/ם נֶ֝הְפְּכ֗וּ כְּ/קֶ֣שֶׁת רְמִיָּֽה
For they prouoked him to anger with their high places: and moued him to ielousie with their grauen images.

וַ/יַּכְעִיס֥וּ/הוּ בְּ/בָמוֹתָ֑/ם וּ֝/בִ/פְסִילֵי/הֶ֗ם יַקְנִיאֽוּ/הוּ
When God heard this, hee was wroth, and greatly abhorred Israel:

שָׁמַ֣ע אֱ֭לֹהִים וַֽ/יִּתְעַבָּ֑ר וַ/יִּמְאַ֥ס מְ֝אֹ֗ד בְּ/יִשְׂרָאֵֽל
So that he forsooke the tabernacle of Shiloh: the tent which he placed among men,

וַ֭/יִּטֹּשׁ מִשְׁכַּ֣ן שִׁל֑וֹ אֹ֝֗הֶל שִׁכֵּ֥ן בָּ/אָדָֽם
And deliuered his strength into captiuitie: and his glory into the enemies hand.
GenevaAnd deliuered his power into captiuitie, and his beautie into the enemies hand.
וַ/יִּתֵּ֣ן לַ/שְּׁבִ֣י עֻזּ֑/וֹ וְֽ/תִפְאַרְתּ֥/וֹ בְ/יַד צָֽר
He gaue his people ouer also vnto the sword: and was wroth with his inheritance.

וַ/יַּסְגֵּ֣ר לַ/חֶ֣רֶב עַמּ֑/וֹ וּ֝/בְ/נַחֲלָת֗/וֹ הִתְעַבָּֽר
The fire consumed their young men: and their maidens were not giuen to mariage.
GenevaThe fire deuoured their chosen men, and their maides were not praised.
בַּחוּרָ֥י/ו אָֽכְלָה אֵ֑שׁ וּ֝/בְתוּלֹתָ֗י/ו לֹ֣א הוּלָּֽלוּ
Their priests fell by the sword: and their widowes made no lamentation.

כֹּ֭הֲנָי/ו בַּ/חֶ֣רֶב נָפָ֑לוּ וְ֝/אַלְמְנֹתָ֗י/ו לֹ֣א תִבְכֶּֽינָה
Then the Lord awaked as one out of sleepe: and like a mighty man that shouteth by reason of wine.

So he fed them according to the integritie of his heart: and guided them by the skilfulnesse of his hands.
