Joshua 9
And it came to passe when all the kings which were on this side Iordan in the hilles, and in the valleys, and in all the coasts of the great sea, ouer against Lebanon, the Hittite, and the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hiuite, and the Iebusite heard thereof:

וַ/יְהִ֣י כִ/שְׁמֹ֣עַ כָּֽל הַ/מְּלָכִ֡ים אֲשֶׁר֩ בְּ/עֵ֨בֶר הַ/יַּרְדֵּ֜ן בָּ/הָ֣ר וּ/בַ/שְּׁפֵלָ֗ה וּ/בְ/כֹל֙ ח֚וֹף הַ/יָּ֣ם הַ/גָּד֔וֹל אֶל מ֖וּל הַ/לְּבָנ֑וֹן הַֽ/חִתִּי֙ וְ/הָ֣/אֱמֹרִ֔י הַֽ/כְּנַעֲנִי֙ הַ/פְּרִזִּ֔י הַ/חִוִּ֖י וְ/הַ/יְבוּסִֽי
That they gathered themselues together to fight with Ioshua, and with Israel, with one accord.

וַ/יִּֽתְקַבְּצ֣וּ יַחְדָּ֔ו לְ/הִלָּחֵ֥ם עִם יְהוֹשֻׁ֖עַ וְ/עִם יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל פֶּ֖ה אֶחָֽד
¶ And when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Ioshua had done vnto Iericho, and to Ai,

וְ/יֹשְׁבֵ֨י גִבְע֜וֹן שָׁמְע֗וּ אֵת֩ אֲשֶׁ֨ר עָשָׂ֧ה יְהוֹשֻׁ֛עַ לִֽ/ירִיח֖וֹ וְ/לָ/עָֽי
They did worke wilily, and went and made as if they had beene embassadours, and tooke old sackes vpon their asses, and wine-bottels, old, and rent, and bound vp,
GenevaAnd therefore they wrought craftily: for they went, and fayned themselues ambassadours, and tooke olde sackes vpon their asses, and olde bottels for wine, both rent and bound vp,
וַ/יַּעֲשׂ֤וּ גַם הֵ֨מָּה֙ בְּ/עָרְמָ֔ה וַ/יֵּלְכ֖וּ וַ/יִּצְטַיָּ֑רוּ וַ/יִּקְח֞וּ שַׂקִּ֤ים בָּלִים֙ לַ/חֲמ֣וֹרֵי/הֶ֔ם וְ/נֹאד֥וֹת יַ֨יִן֙ בָּלִ֔ים וּ/מְבֻקָּעִ֖ים וּ/מְצֹרָרִֽים
And old shooes and clowted vpon their feet, & olde garments vpon them, and all the bread of their prouision was drie and mouldie.
GenevaAnd olde shoes and clouted vpon their feete: also the raiment vpon them was old, and all their prouision of bread was dried, and mouled.
וּ/נְעָל֨וֹת בָּל֤וֹת וּ/מְטֻלָּאוֹת֙ בְּ/רַגְלֵי/הֶ֔ם וּ/שְׂלָמ֥וֹת בָּל֖וֹת עֲלֵי/הֶ֑ם וְ/כֹל֙ לֶ֣חֶם צֵידָ֔/ם יָבֵ֖שׁ הָיָ֥ה נִקֻּדִֽים
And they went to Ioshua vnto the campe at Gilgal, and said vnto him, and to the men of Israel, Wee be come from a farre countrey: Now therefore make ye a league with vs.
GenevaSo they came vnto Ioshua into the hoste to Gilgal, and said vnto him, and vnto the men of Israel, Wee be come from a farre countrey: nowe therefore make a league with vs.
וַ/יֵּלְכ֧וּ אֶל יְהוֹשֻׁ֛עַ אֶל הַֽ/מַּחֲנֶ֖ה הַ/גִּלְגָּ֑ל וַ/יֹּאמְר֨וּ אֵלָ֜י/ו וְ/אֶל אִ֣ישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל מֵ/אֶ֤רֶץ רְחוֹקָה֙ בָּ֔אנוּ וְ/עַתָּ֖ה כִּרְתוּ לָ֥/נוּ בְרִֽית
And the men of Israel said vnto the Hiuites, Peraduenture yee dwell among vs, and how shall wee make a league with you.?
GenevaThen the men of Israel said vnto the Hiuites, It may be that thou dwellest among vs, how then can I make a league with thee?
ו/יאמרו אִֽישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל אֶל הַ/חִוִּ֑י אוּלַ֗י בְּ/קִרְבִּ/י֙ אַתָּ֣ה יוֹשֵׁ֔ב וְ/אֵ֖יךְ אכרות לְ/ךָ֥ בְרִֽית
And they said vnto Ioshua, Wee are thy seruants. And Ioshua said vnto them, Who are ye? And from whence come ye?
GenevaAnd they said vnto Ioshua, We are thy seruants. Then Ioshua saide vnto them, Who are ye? and whence come ye?
וַ/יֹּאמְר֥וּ אֶל יְהוֹשֻׁ֖עַ עֲבָדֶ֣י/ךָ אֲנָ֑חְנוּ וַ/יֹּ֨אמֶר אֲלֵ/הֶ֧ם יְהוֹשֻׁ֛עַ מִ֥י אַתֶּ֖ם וּ/מֵ/אַ֥יִן תָּבֹֽאוּ
And they said vnto him, From a very farre countrey thy seruants are come, because of the Name of the LORD thy God: for wee haue heard the fame of him, and all that hee did in Egypt,
GenevaAnd they answered him, From a very farre countrey thy seruants are come for the Name of the Lord thy God: for we haue heard his fame and all that he hath done in Egypt,
וַ/יֹּאמְר֣וּ אֵלָ֗י/ו מֵ/אֶ֨רֶץ רְחוֹקָ֤ה מְאֹד֙ בָּ֣אוּ עֲבָדֶ֔י/ךָ לְ/שֵׁ֖ם יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֑י/ךָ כִּֽי שָׁמַ֣עְנוּ שָׁמְע֔/וֹ וְ/אֵ֛ת כָּל אֲשֶׁ֥ר עָשָׂ֖ה בְּ/מִצְרָֽיִם
And all that hee did to the two kings of the Amorites, that were beyond Iordan, to Sihon king of Heshbon, and to Og king of Bashan, which was at Ashtaroth.

וְ/אֵ֣ת כָּל אֲשֶׁ֣ר עָשָׂ֗ה לִ/שְׁנֵי֙ מַלְכֵ֣י הָ/אֱמֹרִ֔י אֲשֶׁ֖ר בְּ/עֵ֣בֶר הַ/יַּרְדֵּ֑ן לְ/סִיחוֹן֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ חֶשְׁבּ֔וֹן וּ/לְ/ע֥וֹג מֶֽלֶךְ הַ/בָּשָׁ֖ן אֲשֶׁ֥ר בְּ/עַשְׁתָּרֽוֹת
Wherefore our Elders and all the inhabitants of our countrey, spake to vs, saying, Take victuals with you for the iourney, and goe to meete them, and say vnto them, Wee are your seruants: therefore now make ye a league with vs.

וַ/יֹּאמְר֣וּ אֵלֵ֡י/נוּ זְֽקֵינֵי/נוּ֩ וְ/כָל יֹשְׁבֵ֨י אַרְצֵ֜/נוּ לֵ/אמֹ֗ר קְח֨וּ בְ/יֶדְ/כֶ֤ם צֵידָה֙ לַ/דֶּ֔רֶךְ וּ/לְכ֖וּ לִ/קְרָאתָ֑/ם וַ/אֲמַרְתֶּ֤ם אֲלֵי/הֶם֙ עַבְדֵי/כֶ֣ם אֲנַ֔חְנוּ וְ/עַתָּ֖ה כִּרְתוּ לָ֥/נוּ בְרִֽית
This our bread, wee tooke hote for our prouision out of our houses, on the day we came forth to goe vnto you: but now behold, it is dry, & it is mouldy.
GenevaThis our bread we tooke it hote with vs for vittailes out of our houses, the day we departed to come vnto you: but nowe beholde, it is dried, and it is mouled.
זֶ֣ה לַחְמֵ֗/נוּ חָ֞ם הִצְטַיַּ֤דְנוּ אֹת/וֹ֙ מִ/בָּ֣תֵּ֔י/נוּ בְּ/י֥וֹם צֵאתֵ֖/נוּ לָ/לֶ֣כֶת אֲלֵי/כֶ֑ם וְ/עַתָּה֙ הִנֵּ֣ה יָבֵ֔שׁ וְ/הָיָ֖ה נִקֻּדִֽים
And these bottels of wine which we filled, were new, and behold, they be rent: and these our garments, and our shooes are become old, by reason of the very long iourney.

וְ/אֵ֨לֶּה נֹאד֤וֹת הַ/יַּ֨יִן֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר מִלֵּ֣אנוּ חֲדָשִׁ֔ים וְ/הִנֵּ֖ה הִתְבַּקָּ֑עוּ וְ/אֵ֤לֶּה שַׂלְמוֹתֵ֨י/נוּ֙ וּ/נְעָלֵ֔י/נוּ בָּל֕וּ מֵ/רֹ֥ב הַ/דֶּ֖רֶךְ מְאֹֽד
And the men tooke of their victuals, and asked not counsell at the mouth of the LORD.
GenevaAnd the men accepted their tale concerning their vittailes, and counselled not with the mouth of the Lord.
וַ/יִּקְח֥וּ הָֽ/אֲנָשִׁ֖ים מִ/צֵּידָ֑/ם וְ/אֶת פִּ֥י יְהוָ֖ה לֹ֥א שָׁאָֽלוּ
And Ioshua made peace with them, and made a league with them, to let them liue: and the princes of the Congregation sware vnto them.

וַ/יַּ֨עַשׂ לָ/הֶ֤ם יְהוֹשֻׁ֨עַ֙ שָׁל֔וֹם וַ/יִּכְרֹ֥ת לָ/הֶ֛ם בְּרִ֖ית לְ/חַיּוֹתָ֑/ם וַ/יִּשָּׁבְע֣וּ לָ/הֶ֔ם נְשִׂיאֵ֖י הָ/עֵדָֽה
¶ And it came to passe at the end of three dayes, after they had made a league with them, that they heard that they were their neighbours, and that they dwelt among them.

And the children of Israel iourneyed, and came vnto their cities on the third day: now their cities were Gibeon, and Chephirah, and Beeroth, and Kiriath iearim.

וַ/יִּסְע֣וּ בְנֵֽי יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל וַ/יָּבֹ֛אוּ אֶל עָרֵי/הֶ֖ם בַּ/יּ֣וֹם הַ/שְּׁלִישִׁ֑י וְ/עָרֵי/הֶם֙ גִּבְע֣וֹן וְ/הַ/כְּפִירָ֔ה וּ/בְאֵר֖וֹת וְ/קִרְיַ֥ת יְעָרִֽים
And the children of Israel smote them not, because the Princes of the Congregation had sworne vnto them by the LORD God of Israel: And all the Congregation murmured against the Princes.
GenevaAnd the children of Israel slewe them not, because the Princes of the Congregation had sworne vnto them by the Lord God of Israel: wherefore all the Congregation murmured against the Princes.
וְ/לֹ֤א הִכּוּ/ם֙ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל כִּֽי נִשְׁבְּע֤וּ לָ/הֶם֙ נְשִׂיאֵ֣י הָֽ/עֵדָ֔ה בַּֽ/יהוָ֖ה אֱלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וַ/יִּלֹּ֥נוּ כָל הָ/עֵדָ֖ה עַל הַ/נְּשִׂיאִֽים
But all the Princes said vnto all the Congregation, We haue sworne vnto them by the LORD God of Israel: now therefore we may not touch them.
GenevaThen all the Princes said vnto all the Congregation, We haue sworne vnto them by the Lord God of Israel: nowe therefore we may not touch them.
וַ/יֹּאמְר֤וּ כָל הַ/נְּשִׂיאִים֙ אֶל כָּל הָ֣/עֵדָ֔ה אֲנַ֨חְנוּ֙ נִשְׁבַּ֣עְנוּ לָ/הֶ֔ם בַּֽ/יהוָ֖ה אֱלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וְ/עַתָּ֕ה לֹ֥א נוּכַ֖ל לִ/נְגֹּ֥עַ בָּ/הֶֽם
This we will doe to them; wee will euen let them liue, lest wrath be vpon vs, because of the oath which wee sware vnto them.
GenevaBut this we wil doe to them, and let them liue, least the wrath be vpon vs because of the othe which we sware vnto them.
זֹ֛את נַעֲשֶׂ֥ה לָ/הֶ֖ם וְ/הַחֲיֵ֣ה אוֹתָ֑/ם וְ/לֹֽא יִֽהְיֶ֤ה עָלֵ֨י/נוּ֙ קֶ֔צֶף עַל הַ/שְּׁבוּעָ֖ה אֲשֶׁר נִשְׁבַּ֥עְנוּ לָ/הֶֽם
And the Princes said vnto them, Let them liue, (but let them bee hewers of wood, and drawers of water, vnto all the Congregation,) as the Princes had promised them.
GenevaAnd the Princes sayd vnto them againe, Let them liue, but they shall hewe wood, and drawe water vnto all the Congregation, as the Princes appoint them.
וַ/יֹּאמְר֧וּ אֲלֵי/הֶ֛ם הַ/נְּשִׂיאִ֖ים יִֽחְי֑וּ וַ֠/יִּֽהְיוּ חֹטְבֵ֨י עֵצִ֤ים וְ/שֹֽׁאֲבֵי מַ֨יִם֙ לְ/כָל הָ֣/עֵדָ֔ה כַּ/אֲשֶׁ֛ר דִּבְּר֥וּ לָ/הֶ֖ם הַ/נְּשִׂיאִֽים
¶ And Ioshua called for them, and he spake vnto them, saying, Wherefore haue ye beguiled vs, saying, We are very farre from you? when ye dwell among vs.
GenevaIoshua then called them, and talked with them, and sayd, Wherefore haue ye beguiled vs, saying, We are very farre from you, when ye dwel among vs?
וַ/יִּקְרָ֤א לָ/הֶם֙ יְהוֹשֻׁ֔עַ וַ/יְדַבֵּ֥ר אֲלֵי/הֶ֖ם לֵ/אמֹ֑ר לָ/מָּה֩ רִמִּיתֶ֨ם אֹתָ֜/נוּ לֵ/אמֹ֗ר רְחוֹקִ֨ים אֲנַ֤חְנוּ מִ/כֶּם֙ מְאֹ֔ד וְ/אַתֶּ֖ם בְּ/קִרְבֵּ֥/נוּ יֹשְׁבִֽים
Now therefore ye are cursed, and there shall none of you bee freed from being bondmen, and hewers of wood, and drawers of water, for the house of my God.

וְ/עַתָּ֖ה אֲרוּרִ֣ים אַתֶּ֑ם וְ/לֹֽא יִכָּרֵ֨ת מִ/כֶּ֜ם עֶ֗בֶד וְ/חֹטְבֵ֥י עֵצִ֛ים וְ/שֹֽׁאֲבֵי מַ֖יִם לְ/בֵ֥ית אֱלֹהָֽ/י
And they answered Ioshua, and said, Because it was certainely told thy seruants, how that the LORD thy God commanded his seruant Moses to giue you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you, therefore we were sore afraid of our liues because of you, and haue done this thing.
GenevaAnd they answered Ioshua, and sayd, Because it was tolde thy seruants, that the Lord thy God had commanded his seruant Moses to giue you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land out of your sight, therefore we were exceeding sore afraid for our liues at the presence of you, and haue done this thing:
וַ/יַּעֲנ֨וּ אֶת יְהוֹשֻׁ֜עַ וַ/יֹּאמְר֗וּ כִּי֩ הֻגֵּ֨ד הֻגַּ֤ד לַ/עֲבָדֶ֨י/ךָ֙ אֵת֩ אֲשֶׁ֨ר צִוָּ֜ה יְהוָ֤ה אֱלֹהֶ֨י/ךָ֙ אֶת מֹשֶׁ֣ה עַבְדּ֔/וֹ לָ/תֵ֤ת לָ/כֶם֙ אֶת כָּל הָ/אָ֔רֶץ וּ/לְ/הַשְׁמִ֛יד אֶת כָּל יֹשְׁבֵ֥י הָ/אָ֖רֶץ מִ/פְּנֵי/כֶ֑ם וַ/נִּירָ֨א מְאֹ֤ד לְ/נַפְשֹׁתֵ֨י/נוּ֙ מִ/פְּנֵי/כֶ֔ם וַֽ/נַּעֲשֵׂ֖ה אֶת הַ/דָּבָ֥ר הַ/זֶּֽה
And now behold, we are in thine hand: as it seemeth good and right vnto thee to doe vnto vs, doe.
GenevaAnd beholde nowe, we are in thine hand: doe as it seemeth good and right in thine eyes to doe vnto vs.
וְ/עַתָּ֖ה הִנְ/נ֣וּ בְ/יָדֶ֑/ךָ כַּ/טּ֨וֹב וְ/כַ/יָּשָׁ֧ר בְּ/עֵינֶ֛י/ךָ לַ/עֲשׂ֥וֹת לָ֖/נוּ עֲשֵֽׂה
And so did he vnto them, and deliuered them out of the hand of the children of Israel, that they slew them not.

וַ/יַּ֥עַשׂ לָ/הֶ֖ם כֵּ֑ן וַ/יַּצֵּ֥ל אוֹתָ֛/ם מִ/יַּ֥ד בְּנֵֽי יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל וְ/לֹ֥א הֲרָגֽוּ/ם
And Ioshua made them that day, hewers of wood, and drawers of water for the Congregation, and for the Altar of the LORD, euen vnto this day, in the place which he should choose.
GenevaAnd Ioshua appointed them that same day to be hewers of wood, and drawers of water for the Congregation, and for the altar of the Lord vnto this day, in the place which he should chuse.
וַ/יִּתְּנֵ֨/ם יְהוֹשֻׁ֜עַ בַּ/יּ֣וֹם הַ/ה֗וּא חֹטְבֵ֥י עֵצִ֛ים וְ/שֹׁ֥אֲבֵי מַ֖יִם לָֽ/עֵדָ֑ה וּ/לְ/מִזְבַּ֤ח יְהוָה֙ עַד הַ/יּ֣וֹם הַ/זֶּ֔ה אֶל הַ/מָּק֖וֹם אֲשֶׁ֥ר יִבְחָֽר
