But Iob answered, and sayd,
GenevaBvt Iob answered, and said,
וַ/יַּ֥עַן אִיּ֗וֹב וַ/יֹּאמַֽר
Oh that my griefe were throughly weighed, and my calamitie layd in the balances together.
GenevaOh that my griefe were well weighed, and my miseries were layed together in the balance.
ל֗וּ שָׁק֣וֹל יִשָּׁקֵ֣ל כַּעְשִׂ֑/י ו/הית/י בְּֽ/מֹאזְנַ֥יִם יִשְׂאוּ יָֽחַד
For now it would be heauier then the sand of the sea, therefore my words are swallowed vp.
GenevaFor it woulde be nowe heauier then the sande of the sea: therefore my wordes are swallowed vp.
כִּֽי עַתָּ֗ה מֵ/ח֣וֹל יַמִּ֣ים יִכְבָּ֑ד עַל כֵּ֝֗ן דְּבָרַ֥/י לָֽעוּ
For the arrowes of the Almightie are within me, the poyson whereof drinketh vp my spirit: the terrors of God doe set themselues in aray against mee.

כִּ֤י חִצֵּ֪י שַׁדַּ֡י עִמָּדִ֗/י אֲשֶׁ֣ר חֲ֭מָתָ/ם שֹׁתָ֣ה רוּחִ֑/י בִּעוּתֵ֖י אֱל֣וֹהַּ יַֽעַרְכֽוּ/נִי
Doeth the wilde asse bray when he hath grasse? or loweth the oxe ouer his fodder?

הֲ/יִֽנְהַק פֶּ֥רֶא עֲלֵי דֶ֑שֶׁא אִ֥ם יִגְעֶה שּׁ֝֗וֹר עַל בְּלִילֽ/וֹ
Can that which is vnsauery, bee eaten without salt? or is there any taste in the white of an egge?

הֲ/יֵאָכֵ֣ל תָּ֭פֵל מִ/בְּלִי מֶ֑לַח אִם יֶשׁ טַ֝֗עַם בְּ/רִ֣יר חַלָּמֽוּת
The things that my soule refused to touch, are as my sorrowfull meat.
GenevaSuch things as my soule refused to touch, as were sorowes, are my meate.
מֵאֲנָ֣ה לִ/נְגּ֣וֹעַ נַפְשִׁ֑/י הֵ֝֗מָּה כִּ/דְוֵ֥י לַחְמִֽ/י
O that I might haue my request! and that God would graunt mee the thing that I long for!
GenevaOh that I might haue my desire, and that God would grant me the thing that I long for!
מִֽי יִ֭תֵּן תָּב֣וֹא שֶֽׁאֱלָתִ֑/י וְ֝/תִקְוָתִ֗/י יִתֵּ֥ן אֱלֽוֹהַּ
Euen that it would please God to destroy mee, that he would let loose his hand, and cut me off.
GenevaThat is, that God would destroy me: that he would let his hand go, and cut me off.
וְ/יֹאֵ֣ל אֱ֭לוֹהַּ וִֽ/ידַכְּאֵ֑/נִי יַתֵּ֥ר יָ֝ד֗/וֹ וִֽ/יבַצְּעֵֽ/נִי
Then should I yet haue comfort, yea I would harden my selfe in sorrow; let him not spare, for I haue not concealed the words of the holy One.
GenevaThen should I yet haue comfort, (though I burne with sorowe, let him not spare) because I haue not denyed the wordes of the Holy one.
וּ֥/תְהִי ע֨וֹד נֶ֘חָ֤מָתִ֗/י וַ/אֲסַלְּדָ֣ה בְ֭/חִילָה לֹ֣א יַחְמ֑וֹל כִּי לֹ֥א כִ֝חַ֗דְתִּי אִמְרֵ֥י קָדֽוֹשׁ
What is my strength, that I should hope? and what is mine ende, that I should prolong my life?
GenevaWhat power haue I that I should endure? or what is mine end, if I should prolong my life?
מַה כֹּחִ֥/י כִֽי אֲיַחֵ֑ל וּ/מַה קִּ֝צִּ֗/י כִּֽי אַאֲרִ֥יךְ נַפְשִֽׁ/י
Is my strength the strength of stones? or is my flesh of brasse?
GenevaIs my strength the strength of stones? or is my flesh of brasse?
אִם כֹּ֣חַ אֲבָנִ֣ים כֹּחִ֑/י אִֽם בְּשָׂרִ֥/י נָחֽוּשׁ
Is not my helpe in me? and is wisedome driuen quite from me?
GenevaIs it not so, that there is in me no helpe? and that strength is taken from me?
הַ/אִ֬ם אֵ֣ין עֶזְרָתִ֣/י בִ֑/י וְ֝/תֻשִׁיָּ֗ה נִדְּחָ֥ה מִמֶּֽ/נִּי
To him that is afflicted, pitie should be shewed from his friend; But he forsaketh the feare of the Almighty.
GenevaHe that is in miserie, ought to be comforted of his neighbour: but men haue forsaken the feare of the Almightie.
לַ/מָּ֣ס מֵרֵעֵ֣/הוּ חָ֑סֶד וְ/יִרְאַ֖ת שַׁדַּ֣י יַעֲזֽוֹב
My brethren haue delt deceitfully as a brooke, & as the streame of brookes they passe away,
GenevaMy brethre haue deceiued me as a brook, and as the rising of the riuers they passe away.
אַ֭חַ/י בָּגְד֣וּ כְמוֹ נָ֑חַל כַּ/אֲפִ֖יק נְחָלִ֣ים יַעֲבֹֽרוּ
Which are blackish by reason of the yce, and wherein the snow is hid:
GenevaWhich are blackish with yee, and wherein the snowe is hid.
הַ/קֹּדְרִ֥ים מִנִּי קָ֑רַח עָ֝לֵ֗י/מוֹ יִתְעַלֶּם שָֽׁלֶג
What time they waxe warme, they vanish: when it is hot, they are consumed out of their place.
GenevaBut in time they are dryed vp with heate and are consumed: and when it is hote they faile out of their places,
בְּ֭/עֵת יְזֹרְב֣וּ נִצְמָ֑תוּ בְּ֝/חֻמּ֗/וֹ נִדְעֲכ֥וּ מִ/מְּקוֹמָֽ/ם
The pathes of their way are turned aside; they goe to nothing, and perish.
GenevaOr they depart from their way and course, yea, they vanish and perish.
יִ֭לָּ֣פְתוּ אָרְח֣וֹת דַּרְכָּ֑/ם יַעֲל֖וּ בַ/תֹּ֣הוּ וְ/יֹאבֵֽדוּ
The troupes of Tema looked, the companies of Sheba waited for them.
GenevaThey that go to Tema, considered them, and they that goe to Sheba, waited for them.
הִ֭בִּיטוּ אָרְח֣וֹת תֵּמָ֑א הֲלִיכֹ֥ת שְׁ֝בָ֗א קִוּוּ לָֽ/מוֹ
They were confounded because they had hoped; they came thither, and were ashamed.

בֹּ֥שׁוּ כִּֽי בָטָ֑ח בָּ֥אוּ עָ֝דֶ֗י/הָ וַ/יֶּחְפָּֽרוּ
For now ye are nothing; ye see my casting downe, and are afraid.
GenevaSurely nowe are ye like vnto it: ye haue seene my fearefull plague, and are afraide.
כִּֽי עַ֭תָּה הֱיִ֣יתֶם לא תִּֽרְא֥וּ חֲ֝תַ֗ת וַ/תִּירָֽאוּ
Did I say, Bring vnto mee? or giue a reward for me of your substance?
GenevaWas it because I said, Bring vnto me? or giue a rewarde to me of your substance?
הֲֽ/כִי אָ֭מַרְתִּי הָ֣בוּ לִ֑/י וּ֝/מִ/כֹּחֲ/כֶ֗ם שִׁחֲד֥וּ בַעֲדִֽ/י
Or deliuer me from the enemies hand, or redeeme me from the hand of the mighty?
GenevaAnd deliuer me from the enemies hande, or ransome me out of the hand of tyrants?
וּ/מַלְּט֥וּ/נִי מִ/יַּד צָ֑ר וּ/מִ/יַּ֖ד עָרִיצִ֣ים תִּפְדּֽוּ/נִי
Teach me, and I will hold my tongue: and cause mee to vnderstand wherein I haue erred.

ה֭וֹרוּ/נִי וַ/אֲנִ֣י אַחֲרִ֑ישׁ וּ/מַה שָּׁ֝גִ֗יתִי הָבִ֥ינוּ לִֽ/י
How forcible are right wordes? but what doeth your arguing reproue?
GenevaHowe stedfast are the wordes of righteousnes? and what can any of you iustly reproue?
מַה נִּמְרְצ֥וּ אִמְרֵי יֹ֑שֶׁר וּ/מַה יּוֹכִ֖יחַ הוֹכֵ֣חַ מִ/כֶּֽם
Do ye imagine to reproue words, and the speeches of one that is desperate, which are as winde?
GenevaDoe ye imagine to reproue wordes, that the talke of the afflicted should be as the winde?
הַ/לְ/הוֹכַ֣ח מִלִּ֣ים תַּחְשֹׁ֑בוּ וּ֝/לְ/ר֗וּחַ אִמְרֵ֥י נֹאָֽשׁ
Yea, ye ouerwhelme the fatherlesse, and you digge a pit for your friend.
GenevaYe make your wrath to fall vpon the fatherlesse, and dig a pit for your friende.
אַף עַל יָת֥וֹם תַּפִּ֑ילוּ וְ֝/תִכְר֗וּ עַל רֵֽיעֲ/כֶֽם
Now therefore be content, looke vpon mee, for it is euident vnto you, if I lie.
GenevaNowe therefore be content to looke vpon me: for I will not lie before your face.
וְ֭/עַתָּה הוֹאִ֣ילוּ פְנוּ בִ֑/י וְ/עַל פְּ֝נֵי/כֶ֗ם אִם אֲכַזֵּֽב
Returne, I pray you, let it not be iniquitie; yea returne againe: my righteousnesse is in it.
GenevaTurne, I pray you, let there be none iniquitie: returne, I say, and ye shall see yet my righteousnesse in that behalfe. Is there iniquitie in my tongue? doeth not my mouth feele sorowes?
שֻֽׁבוּ נָ֭א אַל תְּהִ֣י עַוְלָ֑ה ו/שבי ע֝וֹד צִדְקִ/י בָֽ/הּ
Is there iniquitie in my tongue? cannot my taste discerne peruerse things?
