Job 2

Againe there was a day when the sonnes of God came to present themselues before the LORD, and Satan came also among them to present himselfe before the LORD.

GenevaAnd on a day the children of God came and stood before the Lord, and Satan came also among them, and stoode before the Lord.

וַ/יְהִ֣י הַ/יּ֔וֹם וַ/יָּבֹ֨אוּ֙ בְּנֵ֣י הָֽ/אֱלֹהִ֔ים לְ/הִתְיַצֵּ֖ב עַל יְהוָ֑ה וַ/יָּב֤וֹא גַֽם הַ/שָּׂטָן֙ בְּ/תֹכָ֔/ם לְ/הִתְיַצֵּ֖ב עַל יְהוָֽה

And the LORD said vnto Satan, From whence commest thou? And Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to & fro in the earth, and from walking vp and downe in it.

GenevaThen the Lord sayde vnto Satan, Whence commest thou? And Satan answered the Lord, and sayd, From compassing the earth to and from, and from walking in it.

וַ/יֹּ֤אמֶר יְהוָה֙ אֶל הַ/שָּׂטָ֔ן אֵ֥י מִ/זֶּ֖ה תָּבֹ֑א וַ/יַּ֨עַן הַ/שָּׂטָ֤ן אֶת יְהוָה֙ וַ/יֹּאמַ֔ר מִ/שֻּׁ֣ט בָּ/אָ֔רֶץ וּ/מֵ/הִתְהַלֵּ֖ךְ בָּֽ/הּ

And the LORD said vnto Satan, Hast thou considered my seruant Iob, that there is none like him in the earth; a perfect and an vpright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth euill? and still hee holdeth fast his integritie, although thou moouedst mee against him, to destroy him without cause.

GenevaAnd the Lord sayd vnto Satan, Hast thou not considered my seruant Iob, how none is like him in the earth? an vpright and iust man, one that feareth God, and escheweth euill? for yet he continueth in his vprightnesse, although thou mouedst me against him, to destroy him without cause.

וַ/יֹּ֨אמֶר יְהוָ֜ה אֶל הַ/שָּׂטָ֗ן הֲ/שַׂ֣מְתָּ לִבְּ/ךָ֮ אֶל עַבְדִּ֣/י אִיּוֹב֒ כִּי֩ אֵ֨ין כָּמֹ֜/הוּ בָּ/אָ֗רֶץ אִ֣ישׁ תָּ֧ם וְ/יָשָׁ֛ר יְרֵ֥א אֱלֹהִ֖ים וְ/סָ֣ר מֵ/רָ֑ע וְ/עֹדֶ֨/נּוּ֙ מַחֲזִ֣יק בְּ/תֻמָּת֔/וֹ וַ/תְּסִיתֵ֥/נִי ב֖/וֹ לְ/בַלְּע֥/וֹ חִנָּֽם

And Satan answered the LORD, and said, Skinne for skinne, yea all that a man hath, wil he giue for his life.

GenevaAnd Satan answered the Lord, and sayde, Skin for skin, and all that euer a man hath, will he giue for his life.

וַ/יַּ֧עַן הַ/שָּׂטָ֛ן אֶת יְהוָ֖ה וַ/יֹּאמַ֑ר ע֣וֹר בְּעַד ע֗וֹר וְ/כֹל֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר לָ/אִ֔ישׁ יִתֵּ֖ן בְּעַ֥ד נַפְשֽׁ/וֹ

But put foorth thine hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will curse thee to thy face.

GenevaBut stretch now out thine hand, and touch his bones and his flesh, to see if he will not blaspheme thee to thy face.

אוּלָם֙ שְֽׁלַֽח נָ֣א יָֽדְ/ךָ֔ וְ/גַ֥ע אֶל עַצְמ֖/וֹ וְ/אֶל בְּשָׂר֑/וֹ אִם לֹ֥א אֶל פָּנֶ֖י/ךָ יְבָרֲכֶֽ/ךָּ

And the LORD said vnto Satan, Behold, hee is in thine hand, but saue his life.

GenevaThen the Lord said vnto Satan, Lo, he is in thine hand, but saue his life.

וַ/יֹּ֧אמֶר יְהוָ֛ה אֶל הַ/שָּׂטָ֖ן הִנּ֣/וֹ בְ/יָדֶ֑/ךָ אַ֖ךְ אֶת נַפְשׁ֥/וֹ שְׁמֹֽר

¶ So went Satan foorth from the presence of the LORD, and smote Iob with sore biles, from the sole of his foote vnto his crowne.

וַ/יֵּצֵא֙ הַ/שָּׂטָ֔ן מֵ/אֵ֖ת פְּנֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה וַ/יַּ֤ךְ אֶת אִיּוֹב֙ בִּ/שְׁחִ֣ין רָ֔ע מִ/כַּ֥ף רַגְל֖/וֹ עד קָדְקֳדֽ/וֹ

And hee tooke him a potsheard to scrape himselfe withall; and hee sate downe among the ashes.

וַ/יִּֽקַּֽח ל֣/וֹ חֶ֔רֶשׂ לְ/הִתְגָּרֵ֖ד בּ֑/וֹ וְ/ה֖וּא יֹשֵׁ֥ב בְּ/תוֹךְ הָ/אֵֽפֶר

¶ Then saide his wife vnto him, Doest thou still reteine thine integritie? Curse God, and die.

GenevaThen said his wife vnto him, Doest thou continue yet in thine vprightnes? Blaspheme God, and dye.

וַ/תֹּ֤אמֶר ל/וֹ֙ אִשְׁתּ֔/וֹ עֹדְ/ךָ֖ מַחֲזִ֣יק בְּ/תֻמָּתֶ֑/ךָ בָּרֵ֥ךְ אֱלֹהִ֖ים וָ/מֻֽת

But he said vnto her, Thou speakest as one of the foolish women speaketh; what? shall wee receiue good at the hand of God, and shall wee not receiue euill? In all this did not Iob sinne with his lippes.

וַ/יֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלֶ֗י/הָ כְּ/דַבֵּ֞ר אַחַ֤ת הַ/נְּבָלוֹת֙ תְּדַבֵּ֔רִי גַּ֣ם אֶת הַ/טּ֗וֹב נְקַבֵּל֙ מֵ/אֵ֣ת הָ/אֱלֹהִ֔ים וְ/אֶת הָ/רָ֖ע לֹ֣א נְקַבֵּ֑ל בְּ/כָל זֹ֛את לֹא חָטָ֥א אִיּ֖וֹב בִּ/שְׂפָתָֽי/ו

¶ Now when Iobs three friends heard of all this euill, that was come vpon him, they came euery one from his owne place: Eliphaz the Temanite, and Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite; for they had made an appointment together to come to mourne with him, and to comfort him.

וַֽ/יִּשְׁמְע֞וּ שְׁלֹ֣שֶׁת רֵעֵ֣י אִיּ֗וֹב אֵ֣ת כָּל הָ/רָעָ֣ה הַ/זֹּאת֮ הַ/בָּ֣אָה עָלָי/ו֒ וַ/יָּבֹ֨אוּ֙ אִ֣ישׁ מִ/מְּקֹמ֔/וֹ אֱלִיפַ֤ז הַ/תֵּימָנִי֙ וּ/בִלְדַּ֣ד הַ/שּׁוּחִ֔י וְ/צוֹפַ֖ר הַ/נַּֽעֲמָתִ֑י וַ/יִּוָּעֲד֣וּ יַחְדָּ֔ו לָ/ב֥וֹא לָ/נֽוּד ל֖/וֹ וּֽ/לְ/נַחֲמֽ/וֹ

And when they lift vp their eyes afarre off, and knew him not, they lifted vp their voice, and wept; and they rent euery one his mantle, and sprinckled dust vpon their heades toward heauen.

וַ/יִּשְׂא֨וּ אֶת עֵינֵי/הֶ֤ם מֵ/רָחוֹק֙ וְ/לֹ֣א הִכִּירֻ֔/הוּ וַ/יִּשְׂא֥וּ קוֹלָ֖/ם וַ/יִּבְכּ֑וּ וַֽ/יִּקְרְעוּ֙ אִ֣ישׁ מְעִל֔/וֹ וַ/יִּזְרְק֥וּ עָפָ֛ר עַל רָאשֵׁי/הֶ֖ם הַ/שָּׁמָֽיְמָ/ה

So they sate downe with him vpon the ground seuen dayes, and seuen nights, and none spake a word vnto him; for they saw that his griefe was very great.
