Ezra 4
Now when the aduersaries of Iudah and Beniamin, heard that the children of the captiuitie builded the Temple vnto the LORD God of Israel:

וַֽ/יִּשְׁמְע֔וּ צָרֵ֥י יְהוּדָ֖ה וּ/בִנְיָמִ֑ן כִּֽי בְנֵ֤י הַ/גּוֹלָה֙ בּוֹנִ֣ים הֵיכָ֔ל לַ/יהוָ֖ה אֱלֹהֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל
Then they came to Zerubbabel, and to the chiefe of the fathers, and said vnto them, Let vs build with you, for wee seeke your God, as yee doe, and we doe sacrifice vnto him, since the dayes of Esar-Haddon king of Assur, which brought vs vp hither.
GenevaAnd they came to Zerubbabel, and to the chiefe fathers, and sayd vnto them, We wil builde with you: for we seeke the Lord your God as ye do, and we haue sacrificed vnto him since the time of Esar Haddon king of Asshur, which brought vs vp hither.
וַ/יִּגְּשׁ֨וּ אֶל זְרֻבָּבֶ֜ל וְ/אֶל רָאשֵׁ֣י הָֽ/אָב֗וֹת וַ/יֹּאמְר֤וּ לָ/הֶם֙ נִבְנֶ֣ה עִמָּ/כֶ֔ם כִּ֣י כָ/כֶ֔ם נִדְר֖וֹשׁ לֵֽ/אלֹהֵי/כֶ֑ם ו/לא אֲנַ֣חְנוּ זֹבְחִ֗ים מִ/ימֵי֙ אֵסַ֤ר חַדֹּן֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ אַשּׁ֔וּר הַ/מַּעֲלֶ֥ה אֹתָ֖/נוּ פֹּֽה
But Zerubbabel and Ieshua, and the rest of the chiefe of the fathers of Israel, said vnto them, You haue nothing to doe with vs, to build an house vnto our God, but we our selues together will build vnto the LORD God of Israel, as king Cyrus the King of Persia hath commanded vs.
GenevaThen Zerubbabel, and Ieshua, and the rest of the chiefe fathers of Israel, sayde vnto them, It is not for you, but for vs to buyld the house vnto our God: for we our selues together wil buylde it vnto the Lord God of Israel, as king Cyrus the king of Persia hath commanded vs.
וַ/יֹּאמֶר֩ לָ/הֶ֨ם זְרֻבָּבֶ֜ל וְ/יֵשׁ֗וּעַ וּ/שְׁאָ֨ר רָאשֵׁ֤י הָֽ/אָבוֹת֙ לְ/יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל לֹֽא לָ֣/כֶם וָ/לָ֔/נוּ לִ/בְנ֥וֹת בַּ֖יִת לֵ/אלֹהֵ֑י/נוּ כִּי֩ אֲנַ֨חְנוּ יַ֜חַד נִבְנֶ֗ה לַֽ/יהוָה֙ אֱלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל כַּ/אֲשֶׁ֣ר צִוָּ֔/נוּ הַ/מֶּ֖לֶךְ כּ֥וֹרֶשׁ מֶֽלֶךְ פָּרָֽס
Then the people of the land weakened the handes of the people of Iudah, and troubled them in building,
GenevaWherefore the people of the land discouraged the people of Iudah, and troubled them in buylding,
וַ/יְהִי֙ עַם הָ/אָ֔רֶץ מְרַפִּ֖ים יְדֵ֣י עַם יְהוּדָ֑ה ו/מבלהים אוֹתָ֖/ם לִ/בְנֽוֹת
And hired counsellers against them, to frustrate their purpose, all the dayes of Cyrus king of Persia, euen vntill the reigne of Darius king of Persia.

וְ/סֹכְרִ֧ים עֲלֵי/הֶ֛ם יוֹעֲצִ֖ים לְ/הָפֵ֣ר עֲצָתָ֑/ם כָּל יְמֵ֗י כּ֚וֹרֶשׁ מֶ֣לֶךְ פָּרַ֔ס וְ/עַד מַלְכ֖וּת דָּרְיָ֥וֶשׁ מֶֽלֶךְ פָּרָֽס
And in the reigne of Ahasuerus, in the beginning of his reigne, wrote they vnto him an accusation against the inhabitants of Iudah and Ierusalem.

וּ/בְ/מַלְכוּת֙ אֲחַשְׁוֵר֔וֹשׁ בִּ/תְחִלַּ֖ת מַלְכוּת֑/וֹ כָּתְב֣וּ שִׂטְנָ֔ה עַל יֹשְׁבֵ֥י יְהוּדָ֖ה וִ/ירוּשָׁלִָֽם
¶ And in the dayes of Artaxerxes wrote Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel, and the rest of their companions, vnto Artaxerxes king of Persia; and the writing of the letter was written in the Syrian tongue, and interpreted in the Syrian tongue.
GenevaAnd in the daies of Artahshashte, Mithredath, Tabeel, and the rest of their companions wrote when it was peace, vnto Artahshashte king of Persia, and the writing of the letter was the Aramites writing, and the thing declared was in the language of the Aramites.
וּ/בִ/ימֵ֣י אַרְתַּחְשַׁ֗שְׂתָּא כָּתַ֨ב בִּשְׁלָ֜ם מִתְרְדָ֤ת טָֽבְאֵל֙ וּ/שְׁאָ֣ר כנות/ו עַל ארתחששתא מֶ֣לֶךְ פָּרָ֑ס וּ/כְתָב֙ הַֽ/נִּשְׁתְּוָ֔ן כָּת֥וּב אֲרָמִ֖ית וּ/מְתֻרְגָּ֥ם אֲרָמִֽית
Rehum the Chancellour, and Shimshai the Scribe, wrote a letter against Ierusalem, to Artaxerxes the king, in this sort:

רְח֣וּם בְּעֵל טְעֵ֗ם וְ/שִׁמְשַׁי֙ סָֽפְרָ֔/א כְּתַ֛בוּ אִגְּרָ֥ה חֲדָ֖ה עַל יְרוּשְׁלֶ֑ם לְ/אַרְתַּחְשַׁ֥שְׂתְּא מַלְכָּ֖/א כְּנֵֽמָא
Then, wrote Rehum the Chancellour, and Shimshai the Scribe, and the rest of their companions; the Dinaites, the Apharsathkites, the Tarpelites, the Apharsites, the Archeuites, the Babylonians, the Susanchites, the Dehauites, and the Elamites,

אֱדַ֜יִן רְח֣וּם בְּעֵל טְעֵ֗ם וְ/שִׁמְשַׁי֙ סָֽפְרָ֔/א וּ/שְׁאָ֖ר כְּנָוָתְ/ה֑וֹן דִּ֠ינָיֵ/א וַ/אֲפַרְסַתְכָיֵ֞/א טַרְפְּלָיֵ֣/א אֲפָֽרְסָיֵ֗/א ארכוי בָבְלָיֵ/א֙ שֽׁוּשַׁנְכָיֵ֔/א ד/הוא עֵלְמָיֵֽ/א
And the rest of the nations whom the great and noble Asnappar brought ouer, and set in the cities of Samaria, and the rest that are on this side the Riuer, and at such a time.

וּ/שְׁאָ֣ר אֻמַּיָּ֗/א דִּ֤י הַגְלִי֙ אָסְנַפַּר֙ רַבָּ֣/א וְ/יַקִּירָ֔/א וְ/הוֹתֵ֣ב הִמּ֔וֹ בְּ/קִרְיָ֖ה דִּ֣י שָׁמְרָ֑יִן וּ/שְׁאָ֥ר עֲבַֽר נַהֲרָ֖/ה וּ/כְעֶֽנֶת
¶ This is the copy of the Letter, that they sent vnto him, euen vnto Artaxerxes the king: Thy seruants on this side the Riuer, and at such a time,
GenevaThis is the copie of the letter that they sent vnto King Artahshashte, THY SERVANTS the men beyond the Riuer and Cheeneth, salute thee.
דְּנָה֙ פַּרְשֶׁ֣גֶן אִגַּרְתָּ֔/א דִּ֚י שְׁלַ֣חוּ עֲל֔וֹ/הִי עַל אַרְתַּחְשַׁ֖שְׂתְּא מַלְכָּ֑/א עַבְדָ֛י/ךְ אֱנָ֥שׁ עֲבַֽר נַהֲרָ֖/ה וּ/כְעֶֽנֶת
Be it knowen vnto the king, that the Iewes which came vp from thee to vs, are come vnto Ierusalem, building the rebellious and the bad citie, and haue set vp the walles thereof, and ioyned the foundations.

יְדִ֨יעַ֙ לֶהֱוֵ֣א לְ/מַלְכָּ֔/א דִּ֣י יְהוּדָיֵ֗/א דִּ֤י סְלִ֨קוּ֙ מִן לְוָתָ֔/ךְ עֲלֶ֥י/נָא אֲת֖וֹ לִ/ירוּשְׁלֶ֑ם קִרְיְתָ֨/א מָֽרָדְתָּ֤/א ו/באישת/א בָּנַ֔יִן ו/שורי אשכללו וְ/אֻשַּׁיָּ֖/א יַחִֽיטוּ
Be it knowen now vnto the king, that if this city be builded, and the wals set vp againe, then will they not pay tolle, tribute, and custome, and so thou shalt endammage the reuenue of the kings.
GenevaBe it knowen nowe vnto the King, that if this citie be built, and the foundations of the walles layed, they will not giue tolle, tribute, nor custome: so shalt thou hinder the Kings tribute.
כְּעַ֗ן יְדִ֨יעַ֙ לֶהֱוֵ֣א לְ/מַלְכָּ֔/א דִּ֠י הֵ֣ן קִרְיְתָ֥/א דָךְ֙ תִּתְבְּנֵ֔א וְ/שׁוּרַיָּ֖/ה יִֽשְׁתַּכְלְל֑וּן מִנְדָּֽה בְל֤וֹ וַ/הֲלָךְ֙ לָ֣א יִנְתְּנ֔וּן וְ/אַפְּתֹ֥ם מַלְכִ֖ים תְּהַנְזִֽק
Now because we haue maintenance from the Kings palace, and it was not meete for vs to see the kings dishonour: therefore haue we sent, and certified the king,
GenevaNowe therefore because wee haue bene brought vp in the Kings palace, it was not meete for vs to see the Kings dishonour: for this cause haue we sent and certified the King,
כְּעַ֗ן כָּ/ל קֳבֵל֙ דִּֽי מְלַ֤ח הֵֽיכְלָ/א֙ מְלַ֔חְנָא וְ/עַרְוַ֣ת מַלְכָּ֔/א לָ֥א אֲֽרִֽיךְ לַ֖/נָא לְ/מֶֽחֱזֵ֑א עַ֨ל דְּנָ֔ה שְׁלַ֖חְנָא וְ/הוֹדַ֥עְנָא לְ/מַלְכָּֽ/א
That search may be made in the booke of the Records of thy fathers: so shalt thou finde in the booke of the Records, and know, that this City is a rebellious city, and hurtfull vnto Kings and prouinces, and that they haue moued sedition within the same of olde time: for which cause was this citie destroyed.
GenevaThat one may searche in the booke of the Chronicles of thy fathers, and thou shalt finde in the booke of the Chronicles, and perceiue that this citie is rebellious and noysome vnto Kings and prouinces, and that they haue moued sedition of olde time, for the which cause this citie was destroyed.
דִּ֡י יְבַקַּר֩ בִּֽ/סְפַר דָּכְרָ֨נַיָּ֜/א דִּ֣י אֲבָהָתָ֗/ךְ וּ֠/תְהַשְׁכַּח בִּ/סְפַ֣ר דָּכְרָנַיָּ/א֮ וְ/תִנְדַּע֒ דִּי֩ קִרְיְתָ֨/א דָ֜ךְ קִרְיָ֣א מָֽרָדָ֗א וּֽ/מְהַנְזְקַ֤ת מַלְכִין֙ וּ/מְדִנָ֔ן וְ/אֶשְׁתַּדּוּר֙ עָבְדִ֣ין בְּ/גַוַּ֔/הּ מִן יוֹמָ֖ת עָלְמָ֑/א עַ֨ל דְּנָ֔ה קִרְיְתָ֥/א דָ֖ךְ הָֽחָרְבַֽת
We certifie the king, that if this citie be builded againe, & the walles thereof set vp: by this meanes, thou shalt haue no portion on this side the Riuer.
GenevaWee certifie the King therefore, that if this citie be buylded, and the foundation of the walles layd, by this meanes the portion beyonde the Riuer shall not be thine.
מְהוֹדְעִ֤ין אֲנַ֨חְנָה֙ לְ/מַלְכָּ֔/א דִּ֠י הֵ֣ן קִרְיְתָ֥/א דָךְ֙ תִּתְבְּנֵ֔א וְ/שׁוּרַיָּ֖/ה יִֽשְׁתַּכְלְל֑וּן לָ/קֳבֵ֣ל דְּנָ֔ה חֲלָק֙ בַּ/עֲבַ֣ר נַהֲרָ֔/א לָ֥א אִיתַ֖י לָֽ/ךְ
¶ Then sent the king an answere vnto Rehum the Chancellour, and to Shimshai the scribe, and to the rest of their companions, that dwell in Samaria, and vnto the rest beyond the Riuer, Peace, and at such a time.
GenevaThe King sent an answere vnto Rehum the Chauncelour, and Shimshai the Scribe, and so the rest of their companions that dwelt in Samaria, and vnto the other beyond the Riuer, Shelam and Cheeth.
פִּתְגָמָ֞/א שְׁלַ֣ח מַלְכָּ֗/א עַל רְח֤וּם בְּעֵל טְעֵם֙ וְ/שִׁמְשַׁ֣י סָֽפְרָ֔/א וּ/שְׁאָר֙ כְּנָוָ֣תְ/ה֔וֹן דִּ֥י יָתְבִ֖ין בְּ/שָֽׁמְרָ֑יִן וּ/שְׁאָ֧ר עֲבַֽר נַהֲרָ֛/ה שְׁלָ֖ם וּ/כְעֶֽת
The letter, which ye sent vnto vs, hath bene plainly read before me.
GenevaThe letter which yee sent vnto vs, hath bene openly read before me,
נִשְׁתְּוָנָ֕/א דִּ֥י שְׁלַחְתּ֖וּן עֲלֶ֑י/נָא מְפָרַ֥שׁ קֱרִ֖י קָדָמָֽ/י
And I commaunded, and search hath bene made, and it is found, that this citie of old time hath made insurrection against Kings, and that rebellion & sedition haue bene made therein.
GenevaAnd I haue commanded and they haue searched, and founde, that this citie of olde time hath made insurrection against kings, and hath rebelled, and rebellion hath bene committed therein.
וּ/מִנִּ/י֮ שִׂ֣ים טְעֵם֒ וּ/בַקַּ֣רוּ וְ/הַשְׁכַּ֔חוּ דִּ֚י קִרְיְתָ֣/א דָ֔ךְ מִן יוֹמָת֙ עָֽלְמָ֔/א עַל מַלְכִ֖ין מִֽתְנַשְּׂאָ֑ה וּ/מְרַ֥ד וְ/אֶשְׁתַּדּ֖וּר מִתְעֲבֶד בַּֽ/הּ
There haue bene mighty Kings also ouer Ierusalem, which haue ruled ouer all countreys beyond the Riuer, and tolle, tribute, and custome, was payd vnto them.

וּ/מַלְכִ֣ין תַּקִּיפִ֗ין הֲווֹ֙ עַל יְר֣וּשְׁלֶ֔ם וְ/שַׁ֨לִּיטִ֔ין בְּ/כֹ֖ל עֲבַ֣ר נַהֲרָ֑/ה וּ/מִדָּ֥ה בְל֛וֹ וַ/הֲלָ֖ךְ מִתְיְהֵ֥ב לְ/הֽוֹן
Giue ye now commandement, to cause these men to cease, and that this citie be not builded, vntill another commandement shall be giuen from me.
GenevaMake ye now a decree, that those men may cease, and that the citie be not buylt, till I haue giuen another commandement.
כְּעַן֙ שִׂ֣ימוּ טְּעֵ֔ם לְ/בַטָּלָ֖א גֻּבְרַיָּ֣/א אִלֵּ֑ךְ וְ/קִרְיְתָ֥/א דָךְ֙ לָ֣א תִתְבְּנֵ֔א עַד מִנִּ֖/י טַעְמָ֥/א יִתְּשָֽׂם
Take heed now that ye faile not to doe this: why should damage grow to the hurt of the kings?

וּ/זְהִירִ֥ין הֱו֛וֹ שָׁל֖וּ לְ/מֶעְבַּ֣ד עַל דְּנָ֑ה לְ/מָה֙ יִשְׂגֵּ֣א חֲבָלָ֔/א לְ/הַנְזָקַ֖ת מַלְכִֽין
¶ Now when the copy of King Artaxerxes letter was read before Rehum and Shimshai the scribe, and their companions, they went vp in haste to Ierusalem, vnto the Iewes, and made them to cease, by force and power.

אֱדַ֗יִן מִן דִּ֞י פַּרְשֶׁ֤גֶן נִשְׁתְּוָנָ/א֙ דִּ֚י ארתחששתא מַלְכָּ֔/א קֱרִ֧י קֳדָם רְח֛וּם וְ/שִׁמְשַׁ֥י סָפְרָ֖/א וּ/כְנָוָתְ/ה֑וֹן אֲזַ֨לוּ בִ/בְהִיל֤וּ לִ/ירֽוּשְׁלֶם֙ עַל יְה֣וּדָיֵ֔/א וּ/בַטִּ֥לוּ הִמּ֖וֹ בְּ/אֶדְרָ֥ע וְ/חָֽיִל
Then ceased the woorke of the house of the God, which is at Ierusalem. So it ceased, vnto the second yeere of the reigne of Darius king of Persia.

בֵּ/אדַ֗יִן בְּטֵלַת֙ עֲבִידַ֣ת בֵּית אֱלָהָ֔/א דִּ֖י בִּ/ירוּשְׁלֶ֑ם וַ/הֲוָת֙ בָּֽטְלָ֔א עַ֚ד שְׁנַ֣ת תַּרְתֵּ֔ין לְ/מַלְכ֖וּת דָּרְיָ֥וֶשׁ מֶֽלֶךְ פָּרָֽס
