Ecclesiastes 4

So I returned, and considered all the oppressions that are done vnder the sunne; & behold the teares of such as were oppressed, and they had no comforter: and on the side of their oppressours there was power, but they had no comforter.

GenevaSo I turned and considered all the oppressions that are wrought vnder the sunne, and beholde the teares of the oppressed, and none comforteth them: and lo, the strength is of the hand of them that oppresse them, and none comforteth them.

וְ/שַׁ֣בְתִּֽי אֲנִ֗י וָ/אֶרְאֶה֙ אֶת כָּל הָ֣/עֲשֻׁקִ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר נַעֲשִׂ֖ים תַּ֣חַת הַ/שָּׁ֑מֶשׁ וְ/הִנֵּ֣ה דִּמְעַ֣ת הָ/עֲשֻׁקִ֗ים וְ/אֵ֤ין לָ/הֶם֙ מְנַחֵ֔ם וּ/מִ/יַּ֤ד עֹֽשְׁקֵי/הֶם֙ כֹּ֔חַ וְ/אֵ֥ין לָ/הֶ֖ם מְנַחֵֽם

Wherefore I praised the dead which are already dead, more then the liuing which are yet aliue.

GenevaWherefore I praysed the dead which now are dead, aboue the liuing, which are yet aliue.

וְ/שַׁבֵּ֧חַ אֲנִ֛י אֶת הַ/מֵּתִ֖ים שֶׁ/כְּבָ֣ר מֵ֑תוּ מִן הַ֣/חַיִּ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֛ר הֵ֥מָּה חַיִּ֖ים עֲדֶֽנָ/ה

Yea better is he then both they, which hath not yet been, who hath not seene the euill worke that is done vnder the Sunne.

GenevaAnd I count him better then them both, which hath not yet bin: for he hath not seene the euill workes which are wrought vnder the sunne.

וְ/טוֹב֙ מִ/שְּׁנֵי/הֶ֔ם אֵ֥ת אֲשֶׁר עֲדֶ֖ן לֹ֣א הָיָ֑ה אֲשֶׁ֤ר לֹֽא רָאָה֙ אֶת הַ/מַּעֲשֶׂ֣ה הָ/רָ֔ע אֲשֶׁ֥ר נַעֲשָׂ֖ה תַּ֥חַת הַ/שָּֽׁמֶשׁ

¶ Againe I considered all trauaile, and euery right worke, that for this a man is enuied of his neighbour: this is also vanitie, and vexation of spirit.

GenevaAlso I beheld all trauaile, and all perfection of workes that this is ye enuie of a man against his neighbour: this also is vanitie and vexation of spirit.

וְ/רָאִ֨יתִֽי אֲנִ֜י אֶת כָּל עָמָ֗ל וְ/אֵת֙ כָּל כִּשְׁר֣וֹן הַֽ/מַּעֲשֶׂ֔ה כִּ֛י הִ֥יא קִנְאַת אִ֖ישׁ מֵ/רֵעֵ֑/הוּ גַּם זֶ֥ה הֶ֖בֶל וּ/רְע֥וּת רֽוּחַ

The foole foldeth his hands together, and eateth his owne flesh.

GenevaThe foole foldeth his hands, and eateth vp his owne flesh.

הַ/כְּסִיל֙ חֹבֵ֣ק אֶת יָדָ֔י/ו וְ/אֹכֵ֖ל אֶת בְּשָׂרֽ/וֹ

Better is an handfull with quietnesse, then both the hands full with trauell and vexation of spirit.

GenevaBetter is an handfull with quietnesse, then two handfuls with labour and vexation of spirit.

ט֕וֹב מְלֹ֥א כַ֖ף נָ֑חַת מִ/מְּלֹ֥א חָפְנַ֛יִם עָמָ֖ל וּ/רְע֥וּת רֽוּחַ

¶ Then I returned, and I saw vanitie vnder the Sunne.

GenevaAgaine I returned, and sawe vanitie vnder the sunne.

וְ/שַׁ֧בְתִּי אֲנִ֛י וָ/אֶרְאֶ֥ה הֶ֖בֶל תַּ֥חַת הַ/שָּֽׁמֶשׁ

There is one alone, and there is not a second; yea, he hath neither childe nor brother: yet is there no end of all his labour, neither is his eye satisfied with riches, neither sayth hee, For whom doe I labour, and bereaue my soule of good? this is also vanitie, yea it is a sore trauell.

GenevaThere is one alone, and there is not a second, which hath neither sonne nor brother, yet is there none end of all his trauaile, neither can his eye be satisfied with riches: neither doeth he thinke, For whome doe I trauaile and defraude my soule of pleasure? this also is vanitie, and this is an euill trauaile.

יֵ֣שׁ אֶחָד֩ וְ/אֵ֨ין שֵׁנִ֜י גַּ֣ם בֵּ֧ן וָ/אָ֣ח אֵֽין ל֗/וֹ וְ/אֵ֥ין קֵץ֙ לְ/כָל עֲמָל֔/וֹ גַּם עיני/ו לֹא תִשְׂבַּ֣ע עֹ֑שֶׁר וּ/לְ/מִ֣י אֲנִ֣י עָמֵ֗ל וּ/מְחַסֵּ֤ר אֶת נַפְשִׁ/י֙ מִ/טּוֹבָ֔ה גַּם זֶ֥ה הֶ֛בֶל וְ/עִנְיַ֥ן רָ֖ע הֽוּא

¶ Two are better then one; because they haue a good reward for their labour.

GenevaTwo are better then one: for they haue better wages for their labour.

טוֹבִ֥ים הַ/שְּׁנַ֖יִם מִן הָ/אֶחָ֑ד אֲשֶׁ֧ר יֵשׁ לָ/הֶ֛ם שָׂכָ֥ר ט֖וֹב בַּ/עֲמָלָֽ/ם

For if they fall, the one will lift vp his fellow; but woe to him that is alone, when he falleth: for he hath not another to helpe him vp.

GenevaFor if they fal, the one wil lift vp his felow: but wo vnto him that is alone: for he falleth, and there is not a second to lift him vp.

כִּ֣י אִם יִפֹּ֔לוּ הָ/אֶחָ֖ד יָקִ֣ים אֶת חֲבֵר֑/וֹ וְ/אִ֣י/ל֗/וֹ הָֽ/אֶחָד֙ שֶׁ/יִּפּ֔וֹל וְ/אֵ֥ין שֵׁנִ֖י לַ/הֲקִימֽ/וֹ

Againe, if two lye together, then they haue heate; but howe can one be warme alone?

GenevaAlso if two sleepe together, then shall they haue heate: but to one how should there be heate?

גַּ֛ם אִם יִשְׁכְּב֥וּ שְׁנַ֖יִם וְ/חַ֣ם לָ/הֶ֑ם וּ/לְ/אֶחָ֖ד אֵ֥יךְ יֵחָֽם

And if one preuaile against him, two shall withstand him; and a threefold coard is not quickly broken.

GenevaAnd if one ouercome him, two shall stand against him: and a threefolde coard is not easily broken.

וְ/אִֽם יִתְקְפ/וֹ֙ הָ/אֶחָ֔ד הַ/שְּׁנַ֖יִם יַעַמְד֣וּ נֶגְדּ֑/וֹ וְ/הַ/חוּט֙ הַֽ/מְשֻׁלָּ֔שׁ לֹ֥א בִ/מְהֵרָ֖ה יִנָּתֵֽק

¶ Better is a poore and a wise child, then an old and foolish king who will no more be admonished.

GenevaBetter is a poore and wise childe, then an olde and foolish King, which will no more be admonished.

ט֛וֹב יֶ֥לֶד מִסְכֵּ֖ן וְ/חָכָ֑ם מִ/מֶּ֤לֶךְ זָקֵן֙ וּ/כְסִ֔יל אֲשֶׁ֛ר לֹא יָדַ֥ע לְ/הִזָּהֵ֖ר עֽוֹד

For out of prison hee commeth to raigne, whereas also he that is borne in his kingdome, becommeth poore.

GenevaFor out of the prison he commeth forth to reigne: when as he that is borne in his kingdome, is made poore.

כִּֽי מִ/בֵּ֥ית הָ/סוּרִ֖ים יָצָ֣א לִ/מְלֹ֑ךְ כִּ֛י גַּ֥ם בְּ/מַלְכוּת֖/וֹ נוֹלַ֥ד רָֽשׁ

I considered all the liuing which walke vnder the sunne, with the second child that shall stand vp in his stead.

GenevaI behelde all the liuing, which walke vnder the sunne, with the second childe, which shall stand vp in his place.

רָאִ֨יתִי֙ אֶת כָּל הַ֣/חַיִּ֔ים הַֽ/מְהַלְּכִ֖ים תַּ֣חַת הַ/שָּׁ֑מֶשׁ עִ֚ם הַ/יֶּ֣לֶד הַ/שֵּׁנִ֔י אֲשֶׁ֥ר יַעֲמֹ֖ד תַּחְתָּֽי/ו

There is no end of all the people, euen of all that haue beene before them: they also that come after, shall not reioyce in him: surely this also is vanitie, and vexation of spirit.

GenevaThere is none ende of all the people, nor of all that were before them, and they that come after, shall not reioyce in him: surely this is also vanitie and vexation of spirit.

אֵֽין קֵ֣ץ לְ/כָל הָ/עָ֗ם לְ/כֹ֤ל אֲשֶׁר הָיָה֙ לִ/פְנֵי/הֶ֔ם גַּ֥ם הָ/אַחֲרוֹנִ֖ים לֹ֣א יִשְׂמְחוּ ב֑/וֹ כִּֽי גַם זֶ֥ה הֶ֖בֶל וְ/רַעְי֥וֹן רֽוּחַ
