Chapter 25
Deuteronomy 25
If there bee a controuersie betweene men, and they come vnto iudgment, that the Iudges may iudge them, then they shall iustifie the righteous, and condemne the wicked.
GenevaWhen there shall be strife betweene men, and they shall come vnto iudgement, and sentence shall be giuen vpon them, and the righteous shall be iustified, and the wicked condemned,
כִּֽי יִהְיֶ֥ה רִיב֙ בֵּ֣ין אֲנָשִׁ֔ים וְ/נִגְּשׁ֥וּ אֶל הַ/מִּשְׁפָּ֖ט וּ/שְׁפָט֑וּ/ם וְ/הִצְדִּ֨יקוּ֙ אֶת הַ/צַּדִּ֔יק וְ/הִרְשִׁ֖יעוּ אֶת הָ/רָשָֽׁע
And it shall be, if the wicked man be worthy to be beaten, that the Iudge shall cause him to lie downe, and to bee beaten before his face, according to his fault, by a certaine number.
GenevaThen if so be the wicked be worthy to bee beaten, the iudge shall cause him to lie downe, and to be beaten before his face, according to his trespasse, vnto a certaine nomber.
וְ/הָיָ֛ה אִם בִּ֥ן הַכּ֖וֹת הָ/רָשָׁ֑ע וְ/הִפִּיל֤/וֹ הַ/שֹּׁפֵט֙ וְ/הִכָּ֣ה/וּ לְ/פָנָ֔י/ו כְּ/דֵ֥י רִשְׁעָת֖/וֹ בְּ/מִסְפָּֽר
Fourtie stripes he may giue him, and not exceed: lest if he should exceede, and beate him aboue these, with many stripes, then thy brother should seeme vile vnto thee.
GenevaFortie stripes shall he cause him to haue and not past, lest if he should exceede and beate him aboue that with many stripes, thy brother should appeare despised in thy sight.
אַרְבָּעִ֥ים יַכֶּ֖/נּוּ לֹ֣א יֹסִ֑יף פֶּן יֹסִ֨יף לְ/הַכֹּת֤/וֹ עַל אֵ֨לֶּה֙ מַכָּ֣ה רַבָּ֔ה וְ/נִקְלָ֥ה אָחִ֖י/ךָ לְ/עֵינֶֽי/ךָ
¶ Thou shalt not mussell the oxe when he treadeth out the corne.
GenevaThou shalt not mousell the oxe that treadeth out the corne.
לֹא תַחְסֹ֥ם שׁ֖וֹר בְּ/דִישֽׁ/וֹ
¶ If brethren dwell together, and one of them die, and haue no child, the wife of the dead shall not marrie without, vnto a stranger: her husbands brother shall go in vnto her, and take her to him to wife, and performe the duetie of an husbands brother vnto her.
GenevaIf brethren dwell together, and one of them dye and haue no sonne, the wife of the dead shall not marry without: that is, vnto a stranger, but his kinseman shall goe in vnto her, and take her to wife, and doe the kinsemans office to her.
כִּֽי יֵשְׁב֨וּ אַחִ֜ים יַחְדָּ֗ו וּ/מֵ֨ת אַחַ֤ד מֵ/הֶם֙ וּ/בֵ֣ן אֵֽין ל֔/וֹ לֹֽא תִהְיֶ֧ה אֵֽשֶׁת הַ/מֵּ֛ת הַ/ח֖וּצָ/ה לְ/אִ֣ישׁ זָ֑ר יְבָמָ/הּ֙ יָבֹ֣א עָלֶ֔י/הָ וּ/לְקָחָ֥/הּ ל֛/וֹ לְ/אִשָּׁ֖ה וְ/יִבְּמָֽ/הּ
And it shall be, that the first borne which she beareth, shall succeede in the name of his brother which is dead, that his name be not put out of Israel.

וְ/הָיָ֗ה הַ/בְּכוֹר֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר תֵּלֵ֔ד יָק֕וּם עַל שֵׁ֥ם אָחִ֖י/ו הַ/מֵּ֑ת וְ/לֹֽא יִמָּחֶ֥ה שְׁמ֖/וֹ מִ/יִּשְׂרָאֵֽל
And if the man like not to take his brothers wife, then let his brothers wife go vp to the gate, vnto the Elders, and say, My husbands brother refuseth to raise vp vnto his brother a name in Israel: he will not performe the dutie of my husbands brother.
GenevaAnd if the man will not take his kinsewoman, then let his kinsewoman goe vp to the gate vnto the Elders, and say, My kinsman refuseth to rayse vp vnto his brother a name in Israel: hee will not doe the office of a kinsman vnto me.
וְ/אִם לֹ֤א יַחְפֹּץ֙ הָ/אִ֔ישׁ לָ/קַ֖חַת אֶת יְבִמְתּ֑/וֹ וְ/עָלְתָה֩ יְבִמְתּ֨/וֹ הַ/שַּׁ֜עְרָ/ה אֶל הַ/זְּקֵנִ֗ים וְ/אָֽמְרָה֙ מֵאֵ֨ין יְבָמִ֜/י לְ/הָקִ֨ים לְ/אָחִ֥י/ו שֵׁם֙ בְּ/יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל לֹ֥א אָבָ֖ה יַבְּמִֽ/י
Then the Elders of his citie shall call him and speake vnto him: and if he stand to it, and say, I like not to take her:
GenevaThen the Elders of his citie shall call him, and commune with him: if he stand and say, I wil not take her,
וְ/קָֽרְאוּ ל֥/וֹ זִקְנֵי עִיר֖/וֹ וְ/דִבְּר֣וּ אֵלָ֑י/ו וְ/עָמַ֣ד וְ/אָמַ֔ר לֹ֥א חָפַ֖צְתִּי לְ/קַחְתָּֽ/הּ
Then shal his brothers wife come vnto him in the presence of the Elders, and loose his shooe from off his foote, and spit in his face, and shall answere, and say, So shall it bee done vnto that man that will not build vp his brothers house.
GenevaThen shall his kinswoman come vnto him in the presence of the Elders, and loose his shooe from his foote, and spit in his face, and answere, and say, So shall it be done vnto that man, that will not buylde vp his brothers house.
וְ/נִגְּשָׁ֨ה יְבִמְתּ֣/וֹ אֵלָי/ו֮ לְ/עֵינֵ֣י הַ/זְּקֵנִים֒ וְ/חָלְצָ֤ה נַעֲל/וֹ֙ מֵ/עַ֣ל רַגְל֔/וֹ וְ/יָרְקָ֖ה בְּ/פָנָ֑י/ו וְ/עָֽנְתָה֙ וְ/אָ֣מְרָ֔ה כָּ֚כָה יֵעָשֶׂ֣ה לָ/אִ֔ישׁ אֲשֶׁ֥ר לֹא יִבְנֶ֖ה אֶת בֵּ֥ית אָחִֽי/ו
And his name shall bee called in Israel, the house of him that hath his shooe loosed.
GenevaAnd his name shall be called in Israel, The house of him whose shooe is put off.
וְ/נִקְרָ֥א שְׁמ֖/וֹ בְּ/יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל בֵּ֖ית חֲל֥וּץ הַ/נָּֽעַל
¶ When men striue together one with another, and the wife of the one draweth neere, for to deliuer her husband out of the hand of him that smiteth him, and putteth foorth her hand and taketh him by the secrets:
GenevaWhen men striue together, one with another, if the wife of the one come neere, for to ridde her husband out of the handes of him that smiteth him, and put foorth her hand, and take him by his priuities,
כִּֽי יִנָּצ֨וּ אֲנָשִׁ֤ים יַחְדָּו֙ אִ֣ישׁ וְ/אָחִ֔י/ו וְ/קָֽרְבָה֙ אֵ֣שֶׁת הָֽ/אֶחָ֔ד לְ/הַצִּ֥יל אֶת אִישָׁ֖/הּ מִ/יַּ֣ד מַכֵּ֑ה/וּ וְ/שָׁלְחָ֣ה יָדָ֔/הּ וְ/הֶחֱזִ֖יקָה בִּ/מְבֻשָֽׁי/ו
Then thou shalt cut off her hand, thine eye shall not pitie her.
GenevaThen thou shalt cut off her hande: thine eye shall not spare her.
וְ/קַצֹּתָ֖ה אֶת כַּפָּ֑/הּ לֹ֥א תָח֖וֹס עֵינֶֽ/ךָ
¶ Thou shalt not haue in thy bagge diuers weights, a great, and a small.
GenevaThou shalt not haue in thy bagge two maner of weightes, a great and a small,
לֹֽא יִהְיֶ֥ה לְ/ךָ֛ בְּ/כִֽיסְ/ךָ֖ אֶ֣בֶן וָ/אָ֑בֶן גְּדוֹלָ֖ה וּ/קְטַנָּֽה
Thou shalt not haue in thine house diuers measures, a great, and a small.
GenevaNeither shalt thou haue in thine house diuers measures, a great and a small:
לֹא יִהְיֶ֥ה לְ/ךָ֛ בְּ/בֵיתְ/ךָ֖ אֵיפָ֣ה וְ/אֵיפָ֑ה גְּדוֹלָ֖ה וּ/קְטַנָּֽה
But thou shalt haue a perfect and iust weight, a perfect and iust measure shalt thou haue: that thy dayes may bee lengthened in the land which the LORD thy God giueth thee.
GenevaBut thou shalt haue a right and iust weight: a perfite and a iust measure shalt thou haue, that thy dayes may be lengthened in the land, which the Lord thy God giueth thee.
אֶ֣בֶן שְׁלֵמָ֤ה וָ/צֶ֨דֶק֙ יִֽהְיֶה לָּ֔/ךְ אֵיפָ֧ה שְׁלֵמָ֛ה וָ/צֶ֖דֶק יִֽהְיֶה לָּ֑/ךְ לְמַ֨עַן֙ יַאֲרִ֣יכוּ יָמֶ֔י/ךָ עַ֚ל הָֽ/אֲדָמָ֔ה אֲשֶׁר יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֶ֖י/ךָ נֹתֵ֥ן לָֽ/ךְ
For all that doe such things, and all that doe vnrighteously, are an abomination vnto the LORD thy God.
GenevaFor all that doe such things, and all that doe vnrighteously, are abomination vnto the Lord thy God.
כִּ֧י תוֹעֲבַ֛ת יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֶ֖י/ךָ כָּל עֹ֣שֵׂה אֵ֑לֶּה כֹּ֖ל עֹ֥שֵׂה עָֽוֶל
¶ Remember what Amalek did vnto thee by the way, when ye were come foorth out of Egypt:

זָכ֕וֹר אֵ֛ת אֲשֶׁר עָשָׂ֥ה לְ/ךָ֖ עֲמָלֵ֑ק בַּ/דֶּ֖רֶךְ בְּ/צֵאתְ/כֶ֥ם מִ/מִּצְרָֽיִם
How he met thee by the way, and smote the hindmost of thee, euen all that were feeble behinde thee, when thou wast faint and weary; and he feared not God.
GenevaHow he met thee by ye way, and smote ye hindmost of you, all that were feeble behind thee, when thou wast fainted and weary, and he feared not God.
אֲשֶׁ֨ר קָֽרְ/ךָ֜ בַּ/דֶּ֗רֶךְ וַ/יְזַנֵּ֤ב בְּ/ךָ֙ כָּל הַ/נֶּחֱשָׁלִ֣ים אַֽחַרֶ֔י/ךָ וְ/אַתָּ֖ה עָיֵ֣ף וְ/יָגֵ֑עַ וְ/לֹ֥א יָרֵ֖א אֱלֹהִֽים
Therefore it shall bee when the LORD thy God hath giuen thee rest from all thine enemies round about, in the land which the LORD thy God giueth thee for an inheritance to possesse it; that thou shalt blot out the remembrance of Amalek from vnder heauen: thou shalt not forget it.
GenevaTherefore, when the Lord thy God hath giuen thee rest from all thine enemies round about in the land, which the Lord thy God giueth thee for an inheritance to possesse it, then thou shalt put out the remembrance of Amalek from vnder heauen: forget not.
וְ/הָיָ֡ה בְּ/הָנִ֣יחַ יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֣י/ךָ לְ֠/ךָ מִ/כָּל אֹ֨יְבֶ֜י/ךָ מִ/סָּבִ֗יב בָּ/אָ֨רֶץ֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר יְהוָֽה אֱ֠לֹהֶי/ךָ נֹתֵ֨ן לְ/ךָ֤ נַחֲלָה֙ לְ/רִשְׁתָּ֔/הּ תִּמְחֶה֙ אֶת זֵ֣כֶר עֲמָלֵ֔ק מִ/תַּ֖חַת הַ/שָּׁמָ֑יִם לֹ֖א תִּשְׁכָּֽח
