1 Kings 12
And Rehoboam went to Shechem: for all Israel were come to Shechem to make him king.

וַ/יֵּ֥לֶךְ רְחַבְעָ֖ם שְׁכֶ֑ם כִּ֥י שְׁכֶ֛ם בָּ֥א כָל יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל לְ/הַמְלִ֥יךְ אֹתֽ/וֹ
And it came to passe when Ieroboam the sonne of Nebat, who was yet in Egypt, heard of it (for hee was fled from the presence of king Solomon, and Ieroboam dwelt in Egypt:)
GenevaAnd whe Ieroboam ye sonne of Nebat heard of it (who was yet in Egypt, whither Ieroboam had fled from king Salomon, and dwelt in Egypt)
וַ/יְהִ֞י כִּ/שְׁמֹ֣עַ יָרָבְעָ֣ם בֶּן נְבָ֗ט וְ/הוּא֙ עוֹדֶ֣/נּוּ בְ/מִצְרַ֔יִם אֲשֶׁ֣ר בָּרַ֔ח מִ/פְּנֵ֖י הַ/מֶּ֣לֶךְ שְׁלֹמֹ֑ה וַ/יֵּ֥שֶׁב יָרָבְעָ֖ם בְּ/מִצְרָֽיִם
That they sent, and called him: and Ieroboam and all the Congregation of Israel came, and spake vnto Rehoboam, saying;

וַֽ/יִּשְׁלְחוּ֙ וַ/יִּקְרְאוּ ל֔/וֹ ו/יבאו יָרָבְעָ֖ם וְ/כָל קְהַ֣ל יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וַֽ/יְדַבְּר֔וּ אֶל רְחַבְעָ֖ם לֵ/אמֹֽר
Thy father made our yoke grieuous: now therefore, make thou the grieuous seruice of thy father, and his heauy yoke which he put vpon vs, lighter, and we will serue thee.

אָבִ֖י/ךָ הִקְשָׁ֣ה אֶת עֻלֵּ֑/נוּ וְ/אַתָּ֡ה עַתָּ֣ה הָקֵל֩ מֵ/עֲבֹדַ֨ת אָבִ֜י/ךָ הַ/קָּשָׁ֗ה וּ/מֵ/עֻלּ֧/וֹ הַ/כָּבֵ֛ד אֲשֶׁר נָתַ֥ן עָלֵ֖י/נוּ וְ/נַעַבְדֶֽ/ךָּ
And hee said vnto them, Depart yet for three daies, then come againe to me. And the people departed.

וַ/יֹּ֣אמֶר אֲלֵי/הֶ֗ם לְכ֥וּ עֹ֛ד שְׁלֹשָׁ֥ה יָמִ֖ים וְ/שׁ֣וּבוּ אֵלָ֑/י וַ/יֵּלְכ֖וּ הָ/עָֽם
¶ And king Rehoboam consulted with the old men that stood before Solomon his father, while he yet liued, and said, How doe you aduise, that I may answere this people?
GenevaAnd King Rehoboam tooke counsell with the olde men that had stande before Salomon his father, while he yet liued, and sayde, What counsell giue ye, that I may make an answere to this people?
וַ/יִּוָּעַ֞ץ הַ/מֶּ֣לֶךְ רְחַבְעָ֗ם אֶת הַ/זְּקֵנִים֙ אֲשֶׁר הָי֣וּ עֹמְדִ֗ים אֶת פְּנֵי֙ שְׁלֹמֹ֣ה אָבִ֔י/ו בִּֽ/הְיֹת֥/וֹ חַ֖י לֵ/אמֹ֑ר אֵ֚יךְ אַתֶּ֣ם נֽוֹעָצִ֔ים לְ/הָשִׁ֥יב אֶת הָֽ/עָם הַ/זֶּ֖ה דָּבָֽר
And they spake vnto him, saying, If thou wilt be a seruant vnto this people this day, and wilt serue them, and answere them, and speake good words to them, then they will be thy seruants for euer.
GenevaAnd they spake vnto him, saying, If thou be a seruant vnto this people this day, and serue them, and answere them, and speake kinde wordes to them, they will be thy seruants for euer.
ו/ידבר אֵלָ֜י/ו לֵ/אמֹ֗ר אִם הַ֠/יּוֹם תִּֽהְיֶה עֶ֜בֶד לָ/עָ֤ם הַ/זֶּה֙ וַֽ/עֲבַדְתָּ֔/ם וַ/עֲנִיתָ֕/ם וְ/דִבַּרְתָּ֥ אֲלֵי/הֶ֖ם דְּבָרִ֣ים טוֹבִ֑ים וְ/הָי֥וּ לְ/ךָ֛ עֲבָדִ֖ים כָּל הַ/יָּמִֽים
But hee forsooke the counsell of the old men, which they had giuen him, and consulted with the yong men, that were growen vp with him, and which stood before him.
GenevaBut he forsooke the counsell that the olde men had giuen him, and asked counsell of the yong men that had bene brought vp with him, and waited on him.
וַֽ/יַּעֲזֹ֛ב אֶת עֲצַ֥ת הַ/זְּקֵנִ֖ים אֲשֶׁ֣ר יְעָצֻ֑/הוּ וַ/יִּוָּעַ֗ץ אֶת הַ/יְלָדִים֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר גָּדְל֣וּ אִתּ֔/וֹ אֲשֶׁ֥ר הָ/עֹמְדִ֖ים לְ/פָנָֽי/ו
And hee said vnto them, What counsell giue ye, that we may answere this people, who haue spoken to mee, saying, Make the yoke which thy father did put vpon vs, lighter?
GenevaAnd he said vnto them, What counsell giue ye, that we may answere this people, which haue spoken to me, saying, Make the yoke, which thy father did put vpon vs, lighter?
וַ/יֹּ֣אמֶר אֲלֵי/הֶ֗ם מָ֚ה אַתֶּ֣ם נֽוֹעָצִ֔ים וְ/נָשִׁ֥יב דָּבָ֖ר אֶת הָ/עָ֣ם הַ/זֶּ֑ה אֲשֶׁ֨ר דִּבְּר֤וּ אֵלַ/י֙ לֵ/אמֹ֔ר הָקֵל֙ מִן הָ/עֹ֔ל אֲשֶׁר נָתַ֥ן אָבִ֖י/ךָ עָלֵֽי/נוּ
And the young men that were growen vp with him, spake vnto him, saying, Thus shalt thou speake vnto this people that spake vnto thee, saying, Thy father made our yoke heauy, but make thou it lighter vnto vs; thus shalt thou say vnto them, My litle finger shall bee thicker then my fathers loynes.
GenevaThen the yong men that were brought vp with him, spake vnto him, saying, Thus shalt thou say vnto this people, that haue spoken vnto thee, and said, Thy father hath made our yoke heauie, but make thou it lighter vnto vs: euen thus shalt thou say vnto them, My least part shalbe bigger then my fathers loynes.
וַ/יְדַבְּר֣וּ אֵלָ֗י/ו הַ/יְלָדִים֙ אֲשֶׁ֨ר גָּדְל֣וּ אִתּ/וֹ֮ לֵ/אמֹר֒ כֹּֽה תֹאמַ֣ר לָ/עָ֣ם הַ/זֶּ֡ה אֲשֶׁר֩ דִּבְּר֨וּ אֵלֶ֜י/ךָ לֵ/אמֹ֗ר אָבִ֨י/ךָ֙ הִכְבִּ֣יד אֶת עֻלֵּ֔/נוּ וְ/אַתָּ֖ה הָקֵ֣ל מֵ/עָלֵ֑י/נוּ כֹּ֚ה תְּדַבֵּ֣ר אֲלֵי/הֶ֔ם קָֽטָנִּ֥/י עָבָ֖ה מִ/מָּתְנֵ֥י אָבִֽ/י
And now whereas my father did lade you with a heauy yoke, I wil adde to your yoke: my father hath chastised you with whippes, but I will chastise you with scorpions.
GenevaNow where as my father did burden you with a grieuous yoke, I will yet make your yoke heauier: my father hath chastised you with rods, but I will correct you with scourges.
וְ/עַתָּ֗ה אָבִ/י֙ הֶעְמִ֤יס עֲלֵי/כֶם֙ עֹ֣ל כָּבֵ֔ד וַ/אֲנִ֖י אוֹסִ֣יף עַֽל עֻלְּ/כֶ֑ם אָבִ֗/י יִסַּ֤ר אֶתְ/כֶם֙ בַּ/שּׁוֹטִ֔ים וַ/אֲנִ֕י אֲיַסֵּ֥ר אֶתְ/כֶ֖ם בָּ/עַקְרַבִּֽים
¶ So Ieroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam the third day, as the king had appointed, saying, Come to me againe the third day.

ו/יבו יָרָבְעָ֧ם וְ/כָל הָ/עָ֛ם אֶל רְחַבְעָ֖ם בַּ/יּ֣וֹם הַ/שְּׁלִישִׁ֑י כַּ/אֲשֶׁ֨ר דִּבֶּ֤ר הַ/מֶּ֨לֶךְ֙ לֵ/אמֹ֔ר שׁ֥וּבוּ אֵלַ֖/י בַּ/יּ֥וֹם הַ/שְּׁלִישִֽׁי
And the king answered the people roughly, and forsooke the old mens counsell that they gaue him:
GenevaAnd the king answered the people sharpely, and left the old mens counsell that they gaue him,
וַ/יַּ֧עַן הַ/מֶּ֛לֶךְ אֶת הָ/עָ֖ם קָשָׁ֑ה וַֽ/יַּעֲזֹ֛ב אֶת עֲצַ֥ת הַ/זְּקֵנִ֖ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר יְעָצֻֽ/הוּ
And spake to them after the counsell of the young men, saying, My father made your yoke heauy, and I will adde to your yoke; my father also chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.
GenevaAnd spake to them after the counsell of the yong men, saying, My father made your yoke grieuous, and I will make your yoke more grieuous: my father hath chastised you with rods, but I will correct you with scourges.
וַ/יְדַבֵּ֣ר אֲלֵי/הֶ֗ם כַּ/עֲצַ֤ת הַ/יְלָדִים֙ לֵ/אמֹ֔ר אָבִ/י֙ הִכְבִּ֣יד אֶֽת עֻלְּ/כֶ֔ם וַ/אֲנִ֖י אֹסִ֣יף עַֽל עֻלְּ/כֶ֑ם אָבִ֗/י יִסַּ֤ר אֶתְ/כֶם֙ בַּ/שּׁוֹטִ֔ים וַ/אֲנִ֕י אֲיַסֵּ֥ר אֶתְ/כֶ֖ם בָּ/עַקְרַבִּֽים
Wherefore the king hearkened not vnto the people: for the cause was from the LORD, that hee might performe his saying, which the LORD spake by Ahiiah the Shilonite vnto Ieroboam the sonne of Nebat.

וְ/לֹֽא שָׁמַ֥ע הַ/מֶּ֖לֶךְ אֶל הָ/עָ֑ם כִּֽי הָיְתָ֤ה סִבָּה֙ מֵ/עִ֣ם יְהוָ֔ה לְמַ֜עַן הָקִ֣ים אֶת דְּבָר֗/וֹ אֲשֶׁ֨ר דִּבֶּ֤ר יְהוָה֙ בְּ/יַד֙ אֲחִיָּ֣ה הַ/שִּׁילֹנִ֔י אֶל יָרָבְעָ֖ם בֶּן נְבָֽט
¶ So when all Israel saw that the king hearkned not vnto them, the people answered the king, saying, What portion haue we in Dauid? neither haue we inheritance in the sonne of Iesse: to your tents, O Israel: nowe see to thine owne house, Dauid. So Israel departed vnto their tents.

וַ/יַּ֣רְא כָּל יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל כִּ֠י לֹֽא שָׁמַ֣ע הַ/מֶּלֶךְ֮ אֲלֵי/הֶם֒ וַ/יָּשִׁ֣בוּ הָ/עָ֣ם אֶת הַ/מֶּ֣לֶךְ דָּבָ֣ר לֵ/אמֹ֡ר מַה לָּ/נוּ֩ חֵ֨לֶק בְּ/דָוִ֜ד וְ/לֹֽא נַחֲלָ֣ה בְּ/בֶן יִשַׁ֗י לְ/אֹהָלֶ֨י/ךָ֙ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל עַתָּ֕ה רְאֵ֥ה בֵיתְ/ךָ֖ דָּוִ֑ד וַ/יֵּ֥לֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל לְ/אֹהָלָֽי/ו
But as for the children of Israel which dwelt in the cities of Iudah, Rehoboam reigned ouer them.
GenevaHowbeit ouer the children of Israel, which dwelt in the cities of Iudah, did Rehoboam reigne still.
וּ/בְנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל הַ/יֹּשְׁבִ֖ים בְּ/עָרֵ֣י יְהוּדָ֑ה וַ/יִּמְלֹ֥ךְ עֲלֵי/הֶ֖ם רְחַבְעָֽם
Then king Rehoboam sent Adoram, who was ouer the tribute, and all Israel stoned him with stones that hee died: therefore king Rehoboam made speed to get him vp to his charet, to flee to Ierusalem.

וַ/יִּשְׁלַ֞ח הַ/מֶּ֣לֶךְ רְחַבְעָ֗ם אֶת אֲדֹרָם֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר עַל הַ/מַּ֔ס וַ/יִּרְגְּמ֨וּ כָל יִשְׂרָאֵ֥ל בּ֛/וֹ אֶ֖בֶן וַ/יָּמֹ֑ת וְ/הַ/מֶּ֣לֶךְ רְחַבְעָ֗ם הִתְאַמֵּץ֙ לַ/עֲל֣וֹת בַּ/מֶּרְכָּבָ֔ה לָ/נ֖וּס יְרוּשָׁלִָֽם
So Israel rebelled against the house of Dauid vnto this day.

וַ/יִּפְשְׁע֤וּ יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ בְּ/בֵ֣ית דָּוִ֔ד עַ֖ד הַ/יּ֥וֹם הַ/זֶּֽה
And it came to passe when all Israel heard that Ieroboam was come againe, that they sent and called him vnto the Congregation, and made him king ouer all Israel: there was none that followed the house of Dauid, but the tribe of Iudah onely.

וַ/יְהִ֞י כִּ/שְׁמֹ֤עַ כָּל יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ כִּֽי שָׁ֣ב יָרָבְעָ֔ם וַֽ/יִּשְׁלְח֗וּ וַ/יִּקְרְא֤וּ אֹת/וֹ֙ אֶל הָ֣/עֵדָ֔ה וַ/יַּמְלִ֥יכוּ אֹת֖/וֹ עַל כָּל יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל לֹ֤א הָיָה֙ אַחֲרֵ֣י בֵית דָּוִ֔ד זוּלָתִ֥י שֵֽׁבֶט יְהוּדָ֖ה לְ/בַדּֽ/וֹ
¶ And when Rehoboam was come to Ierusalem, hee assembled all the house of Iudah, with the tribe of Beniamin, an hundred and fourescore thousand chosen men which were warriers, to fight against the house of Israel, to bring the kingdome againe to Rehoboam the sonne of Solomon.

ו/יבאו רְחַבְעָם֮ יְרוּשָׁלִַם֒ וַ/יַּקְהֵל֩ אֶת כָּל בֵּ֨ית יְהוּדָ֜ה וְ/אֶת שֵׁ֣בֶט בִּנְיָמִ֗ן מֵאָ֨ה וּ/שְׁמֹנִ֥ים אֶ֛לֶף בָּח֖וּר עֹשֵׂ֣ה מִלְחָמָ֑ה לְ/הִלָּחֵם֙ עִם בֵּ֣ית יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל לְ/הָשִׁיב֙ אֶת הַ/מְּלוּכָ֔ה לִ/רְחַבְעָ֖ם בֶּן שְׁלֹמֹֽה
But the word of God came vnto Shemaiah, the man of God, saying,

וַ/יְהִי֙ דְּבַ֣ר הָֽ/אֱלֹהִ֔ים אֶל שְׁמַעְיָ֥ה אִישׁ הָ/אֱלֹהִ֖ים לֵ/אמֹֽר
Speake vnto Rehoboam the sonne of Solomon king of Iudah, and vnto all the house of Iudah and Beniamin, and to the remnant of the people, saying,

אֱמֹ֗ר אֶל רְחַבְעָ֤ם בֶּן שְׁלֹמֹה֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ יְהוּדָ֔ה וְ/אֶל כָּל בֵּ֥ית יְהוּדָ֖ה וּ/בִנְיָמִ֑ין וְ/יֶ֥תֶר הָ/עָ֖ם לֵ/אמֹֽר
Thus saith the LORD, Ye shall not goe vp, nor fight against your brethren the children of Israel: returne euery man to his house, for this thing is from me. They hearkened therefore to the word of the LORD, and returned to depart, according to the word of the LORD.
GenevaThus saith the Lord, Ye shall not go vp, nor fight against your brethren the children of Israel: returne euery man to his house: for this thing is done by me. They obeyed therefore the worde of the Lord and returned, and departed, according to the worde of the Lord.
כֹּ֣ה אָמַ֣ר יְהוָ֡ה לֹֽא תַעֲלוּ֩ וְ/לֹא תִלָּ֨חֲמ֜וּ/ן עִם אֲחֵי/כֶ֣ם בְּנֵֽי יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל שׁ֚וּבוּ אִ֣ישׁ לְ/בֵית֔/וֹ כִּ֧י מֵ/אִתִּ֛/י נִהְיָ֖ה הַ/דָּבָ֣ר הַ/זֶּ֑ה וַ/יִּשְׁמְעוּ֙ אֶת דְּבַ֣ר יְהוָ֔ה וַ/יָּשֻׁ֥בוּ לָ/לֶ֖כֶת כִּ/דְבַ֥ר יְהוָֽה
¶ Then Ieroboam built Shechem in mount Ephraim, and dwelt therein, and went out from thence, and built Penuel.

And Ieroboam said in his heart, Now shall the kingdome returne to the house of Dauid:

וַ/יֹּ֥אמֶר יָרָבְעָ֖ם בְּ/לִבּ֑/וֹ עַתָּ֛ה תָּשׁ֥וּב הַ/מַּמְלָכָ֖ה לְ/בֵ֥ית דָּוִֽד
If this people goe vp, to doe sacrifice in the house of the LORD at Ierusalem, then shall the heart of this people turne againe vnto their lorde, euen vnto Rehoboam king of Iudah, and they shall kill mee, and goe againe to Rehoboam king of Iudah.
GenevaIf this people goe vp and doe sacrifice in the house of the Lord at Ierusalem, then shall the heart of this people turne againe vnto their lorde, euen to Rehoboam King of Iudah: so shall they kill me and goe againe to Rehoboam King of Iudah.
אִֽם יַעֲלֶ֣ה הָ/עָ֣ם הַ/זֶּ֗ה לַ/עֲשׂ֨וֹת זְבָחִ֤ים בְּ/בֵית יְהוָה֙ בִּ/יר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔ם וְ֠/שָׁב לֵ֣ב הָ/עָ֤ם הַ/זֶּה֙ אֶל אֲדֹ֣נֵי/הֶ֔ם אֶל רְחַבְעָ֖ם מֶ֣לֶךְ יְהוּדָ֑ה וַ/הֲרָגֻ֕/נִי וְ/שָׁ֖בוּ אֶל רְחַבְעָ֥ם מֶֽלֶךְ יְהוּדָֽה
Whereupon the king tooke counsell, and made two calues of gold, and said vnto them, It is too much for you to goe vp to Ierusalem: Behold thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee vp out of the land of Egypt.

וַ/יִּוָּעַ֣ץ הַ/מֶּ֔לֶךְ וַ/יַּ֕עַשׂ שְׁנֵ֖י עֶגְלֵ֣י זָהָ֑ב וַ/יֹּ֣אמֶר אֲלֵ/הֶ֗ם רַב לָ/כֶם֙ מֵ/עֲל֣וֹת יְרוּשָׁלִַ֔ם הִנֵּ֤ה אֱלֹהֶ֨י/ךָ֙ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל אֲשֶׁ֥ר הֶעֱל֖וּ/ךָ מֵ/אֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרָֽיִם
And he set the one in Bethel, and the other put he in Dan.
GenevaAnd he set the one in Beth-el, and the other set he in Dan.
וַ/יָּ֥שֶׂם אֶת הָ/אֶחָ֖ד בְּ/בֵֽית אֵ֑ל וְ/אֶת הָ/אֶחָ֖ד נָתַ֥ן בְּ/דָֽן
And this thing became a sinne: for the people went to worship before the one, euen vnto Dan.
GenevaAnd this thing turned to sinne: for the people went (because of the one) euen to Dan.
וַ/יְהִ֛י הַ/דָּבָ֥ר הַ/זֶּ֖ה לְ/חַטָּ֑את וַ/יֵּלְכ֥וּ הָ/עָ֛ם לִ/פְנֵ֥י הָ/אֶחָ֖ד עַד דָּֽן
And he made an house of hie places, and made priests of the lowest of the people, which were not of the sonnes of Leui.

וַ/יַּ֖עַשׂ אֶת בֵּ֣ית בָּמ֑וֹת וַ/יַּ֤עַשׂ כֹּֽהֲנִים֙ מִ/קְצ֣וֹת הָ/עָ֔ם אֲשֶׁ֥ר לֹֽא הָי֖וּ מִ/בְּנֵ֥י לֵוִֽי
And Ieroboam ordeined a feast in the eight moneth, on the fifteenth day of the moneth, like vnto the feast that is in Iudah, and he offered vpon the altar (so did he in Bethel,) sacrificing vnto the calues that he had made: and he placed in Bethel the priests of the high places which he had made.
GenevaAnd Ieroboam made a feast the fifteenth day of the eight moneth, like vnto the feast that is in Iudah, and offred on the altar. So did he in Beth-el and offered vnto the calues that he had made: and he placed in Beth-el the Priestes of the hie places, which he had made.
וַ/יַּ֣עַשׂ יָרָבְעָ֣ם חָ֡ג בַּ/חֹ֣דֶשׁ הַ/שְּׁמִינִ֣י בַּ/חֲמִשָּֽׁה עָשָׂר֩ י֨וֹם לַ/חֹ֜דֶשׁ כֶּ/חָ֣ג אֲשֶׁ֣ר בִּ/יהוּדָ֗ה וַ/יַּ֨עַל֙ עַל הַ/מִּזְבֵּ֔חַ כֵּ֤ן עָשָׂה֙ בְּ/בֵֽית אֵ֔ל לְ/זַבֵּ֖חַ לָ/עֲגָלִ֣ים אֲשֶׁר עָשָׂ֑ה וְ/הֶעֱמִיד֙ בְּ/בֵ֣ית אֵ֔ל אֶת כֹּהֲנֵ֥י הַ/בָּמ֖וֹת אֲשֶׁ֥ר עָשָֽׂה
So hee offered vpon the altar, which hee had made in Bethel, the fifteenth day of the eighth moneth, euen in the moneth which he had deuised of his owne heart: and ordeined a feast vnto the children of Israel, and he offered vpon the altar, and burnt incense.
GenevaAnd he offered vpon the altar, which he had made in Beth-el, the fifteenth day of the eight moneth, (euen in the moneth which he had forged of his owne heart) and made a solemne feast vnto the children of Israel: and he went vp to the altar, to burne incense.
