Proverbs 26

As snow in summer, and as raine in haruest: so honour is not seemely for a foole.

GenevaAs the snowe in the sommer, and as the raine in the haruest are not meete, so is honour vnseemely for a foole.

כַּ/שֶּׁ֤לֶג בַּ/קַּ֗יִץ וְ/כַ/מָּטָ֥ר בַּ/קָּצִ֑יר כֵּ֤ן לֹא נָאוֶ֖ה לִ/כְסִ֣יל כָּבֽוֹד

As the bird by wandring, as the swallow by flying: so the curse causelesse shall not come.

GenevaAs the sparowe by flying, and the swallow by flying escape, so the curse that is causeles, shall not come.

כַּ/צִּפּ֣וֹר לָ֭/נוּד כַּ/דְּר֣וֹר לָ/ע֑וּף כֵּ֥ן קִֽלְלַ֥ת חִ֝נָּ֗ם לא תָבֹֽא

A whip for the horse, a bridle for the asse; and a rod for the fooles backe.

GenevaVnto the horse belongeth a whip, to the asse a bridle, and a rod to the fooles backe.

שׁ֣וֹט לַ֭/סּוּס מֶ֣תֶג לַ/חֲמ֑וֹר וְ֝/שֵׁ֗בֶט לְ/גֵ֣ו כְּסִילִֽים

Answere not a foole according to his folly, lest thou also be like vnto him.

GenevaAnswer not a foole according to his foolishnes, least thou also be like him.

אַל תַּ֣עַן כְּ֭סִיל כְּ/אִוַּלְתּ֑/וֹ פֶּֽן תִּשְׁוֶה לּ֥/וֹ גַם אָֽתָּה

Answere a foole according to his folly, lest hee be wise in his owne conceit.

GenevaAnswere a foole according to his foolishnes, least he be wise in his owne conceite.

עֲנֵ֣ה כְ֭סִיל כְּ/אִוַּלְתּ֑/וֹ פֶּן יִהְיֶ֖ה חָכָ֣ם בְּ/עֵינָֽי/ו

He that sendeth a message by the hand of a foole, cutteth off the feete, and drinketh dammage.

GenevaHe that sendeth a message by the hand of a foole, is as he that cutteth off the feete, and drinketh iniquitie.

מְקַצֶּ֣ה רַ֭גְלַיִם חָמָ֣ס שֹׁתֶ֑ה שֹׁלֵ֖חַ דְּבָרִ֣ים בְּ/יַד כְּסִֽיל

The legges of the lame are not equall: so is a parable in the mouth of fooles.

GenevaAs they that lift vp the legs of the lame, so is a parable in a fooles mouth.

דַּלְי֣וּ שֹׁ֭קַיִם מִ/פִּסֵּ֑חַ וּ֝/מָשָׁ֗ל בְּ/פִ֣י כְסִילִֽים

As hee that bindeth a stone in a sling; so is hee that giueth honour to a foole.

GenevaAs the closing vp of a precious stone in an heape of stones, so is he that giueth glory to a foole.

כִּ/צְר֣וֹר אֶ֭בֶן בְּ/מַרְגֵּמָ֑ה כֵּן נוֹתֵ֖ן לִ/כְסִ֣יל כָּבֽוֹד

As a thorne goeth vp into the hand of a drunkard; so is a parable in the mouth of fooles.

GenevaAs a thorne standing vp in the hand of a drunkard, so is a parable in the mouth of fooles.

ח֭וֹחַ עָלָ֣ה בְ/יַד שִׁכּ֑וֹר וּ֝/מָשָׁ֗ל בְּ/פִ֣י כְסִילִֽים

The great God that formed all things, both rewardeth the foole, and rewardeth transgressours.

רַ֥ב מְחֽוֹלֵֽל כֹּ֑ל וְ/שֹׂכֵ֥ר כְּ֝סִ֗יל וְ/שֹׂכֵ֥ר עֹבְרִֽים

As a dogge returneth to his vomite: so a foole returneth to his folly.

GenevaAs a dog turneth againe to his owne vomit, so a foole turneth to his foolishnes.

כְּ֭/כֶלֶב שָׁ֣ב עַל קֵא֑/וֹ כְּ֝סִ֗יל שׁוֹנֶ֥ה בְ/אִוַּלְתּֽ/וֹ

Seest thou a man wise in his owne conceit? there is more hope of a foole then of him.

רָאִ֗יתָ אִ֭ישׁ חָכָ֣ם בְּ/עֵינָ֑י/ו תִּקְוָ֖ה לִ/כְסִ֣יל מִמֶּֽ/נּוּ

The slothfull man sayth, There is a lion in the way, a lion is in the streets.

GenevaThe slouthfull man sayth, A lyon is in the way: a lyon is in the streetes.

אָמַ֣ר עָ֭צֵל שַׁ֣חַל בַּ/דָּ֑רֶךְ אֲ֝רִ֗י בֵּ֣ין הָ/רְחֹבֽוֹת

As the doore turneth vpon his hinges: so doeth the slothfull vpon his bedde.

GenevaAs the doore turneth vpon his hinges, so doeth the slouthfull man vpon his bed.

הַ֭/דֶּלֶת תִּסּ֣וֹב עַל צִירָ֑/הּ וְ֝/עָצֵ֗ל עַל מִטָּתֽ/וֹ

The slothfull hideth his hand in his bosome, it grieueth him to bring it againe to his mouth.

GenevaThe slouthfull hideth his hand in his bosome, and it grieueth him to put it againe to his mouth.

טָ֘מַ֤ן עָצֵ֣ל יָ֭ד/וֹ בַּ/צַּלָּ֑חַת נִ֝לְאָ֗ה לַֽ/הֲשִׁיבָ֥/הּ אֶל פִּֽי/ו

The sluggard is wiser in his owne conceit, then seuen men that can render a reason.

חָכָ֣ם עָצֵ֣ל בְּ/עֵינָ֑י/ו מִ֝/שִּׁבְעָ֗ה מְשִׁ֣יבֵי טָֽעַם

He that passeth by, and medleth with strife belonging not to him, is like one that taketh a dog by the eares.

מַחֲזִ֥יק בְּ/אָזְנֵי כָ֑לֶב עֹבֵ֥ר מִ֝תְעַבֵּ֗ר עַל רִ֥יב לֹּֽא לֽ/וֹ

As a mad man, who casteth firebrands, arrowes, and death:

GenevaAs he that faineth himselfe mad, casteth fire brands, arrowes, and mortall things,

כְּֽ֭/מִתְלַהְלֵהַּ הַ/יֹּרֶ֥ה זִקִּ֗ים חִצִּ֥ים וָ/מָֽוֶת

So is the man that deceiueth his neighbour, & sayth, Am not I in sport?

כֵּֽן אִ֭ישׁ רִמָּ֣ה אֶת רֵעֵ֑/הוּ וְ֝/אָמַ֗ר הֲֽ/לֹא מְשַׂחֵ֥ק אָֽנִי

Where no wood is, there the fire goeth out: so where there is no tale-bearer, the strife ceaseth.

GenevaWithout wood the fire is quenched, and without a talebearer strife ceaseth.

בְּ/אֶ֣פֶס עֵ֭צִים תִּכְבֶּה אֵ֑שׁ וּ/בְ/אֵ֥ין נִ֝רְגָּ֗ן יִשְׁתֹּ֥ק מָדֽוֹן

As coales are to burning coales, and wood to fire; so is a contentious man to kindle strife.

GenevaAs ye cole maketh burning coles, and wood a fire, so the contentious man is apt to kindle strife.

פֶּחָ֣ם לְ֭/גֶחָלִים וְ/עֵצִ֣ים לְ/אֵ֑שׁ וְ/אִ֥ישׁ מדונים לְ/חַרְחַר רִֽיב

The words of a tale-bearer are as woundes, and they goe downe into the innermost parts of the belly.

דִּבְרֵ֣י נִ֭רְגָּן כְּ/מִֽתְלַהֲמִ֑ים וְ֝/הֵ֗ם יָרְד֥וּ חַדְרֵי בָֽטֶן

Burning lips, and a wicked heart, are like a potsheard couered with siluer drosse.

GenevaAs siluer drosse ouerlayde vpon a potsheard, so are burning lips, and an euill heart.

כֶּ֣סֶף סִ֭יגִים מְצֻפֶּ֣ה עַל חָ֑רֶשׂ שְׂפָתַ֖יִם דֹּלְקִ֣ים וְ/לֶב רָֽע

Hee that hateth, dissembleth with his lips, and layeth vp deceit within him.

GenevaHe that hateth, will counterfaite with his lips, but in his heart he layeth vp deceite.

ב/שפת/ו יִנָּכֵ֣ר שׂוֹנֵ֑א וּ֝/בְ/קִרְבּ֗/וֹ יָשִׁ֥ית מִרְמָֽה

When he speaketh faire, beleeue him not: for there are seuen abominations in his heart.

GenevaThough he speake fauourably, beleeue him not: for there are seuen abominations in his heart.

כִּֽי יְחַנֵּ֣ן ק֭וֹל/וֹ אַל תַּֽאֲמֶן בּ֑/וֹ כִּ֤י שֶׁ֖בַע תּוֹעֵב֣וֹת בְּ/לִבּֽ/וֹ

Whose hatred is couered by deceit, his wickednesse shall be shewed before the whole congregation.

GenevaHatred may be couered by deceite: but the malice thereof shall be discouered in the congregation.

תִּכַּסֶּ֣ה שִׂ֭נְאָה בְּ/מַשָּׁא֑וֹן תִּגָּלֶ֖ה רָעָת֣/וֹ בְ/קָהָֽל

Whoso diggeth a pit, shall fall therein: and he that rolleth a stone, it will returne vpon him.

GenevaHe that diggeth a pit shall fall therein, and he that rolleth a stone, it shall returne vnto him.

כֹּֽרֶה שַּׁ֭חַת בָּ֣/הּ יִפֹּ֑ל וְ/גֹ֥לֵ֥ל אֶ֝בֶן אֵלָ֥י/ו תָּשֽׁוּב

A lying tongue hateth those that are afflicted by it, and a flattering mouth worketh ruine.

GenevaA false tongue hateth the afflicted, and a flattering mouth causeth ruine.

לְֽשׁוֹן שֶׁ֭קֶר יִשְׂנָ֣א דַכָּ֑י/ו וּ/פֶ֥ה חָ֝לָ֗ק יַעֲשֶׂ֥ה מִדְחֶֽה
