Luke 18

And he spake a parable vnto them, to this ende, that men ought alwayes to pray, and not to faint,

Ἔλεγεν δὲ παραβολὴν αὐτοῖς πρὸς τὸ δεῖν πάντοτε προσεύχεσθαι αὐτοὺς καὶ μὴ ἐγκακεῖν,

Saying, There was in a city a Iudge, which feared not God neither regarded man.

GenevaSaying, There was a iudge in a certaine citie, which feared not God, neither reuereced man.

λέγων· Κριτής τις ἦν ἔν τινι πόλει τὸν θεὸν μὴ φοβούμενος καὶ ἄνθρωπον μὴ ἐντρεπόμενος.

And there was a widowe in that citie, and she came vnto him, saying, Auenge me of mine aduersarie:

GenevaAnd there was a widowe in that citie, which came vnto him, saying, Doe mee iustice against mine aduersarie.

χήρα δὲ ἦν ἐν τῇ πόλει ἐκείνῃ καὶ ἤρχετο πρὸς αὐτὸν λέγουσα· Ἐκδίκησόν με ἀπὸ τοῦ ἀντιδίκου μου.

And hee would not for a while. But afterward he said within himselfe, Though I feare not God, nor regard man,

GenevaAnd hee would not of a long time: but afterward he said with himselfe, Though I feare not God, nor reuerence man,

καὶ οὐκ ἤθελεν ἐπὶ χρόνον, μετὰ ταῦτα δὲ εἶπεν ἐν ἑαυτῷ· Εἰ καὶ τὸν θεὸν οὐ φοβοῦμαι οὐδὲ ἄνθρωπον ἐντρέπομαι,

Yet because this widow troubleth me, I will auenge her, lest by her continuall comming, she wearie me.

GenevaYet because this widowe troubleth mee, I will doe her right, lest at the last shee come and make me wearie.

διά γε τὸ παρέχειν μοι κόπον τὴν χήραν ταύτην ἐκδικήσω αὐτήν ἵνα μὴ εἰς τέλος ἐρχομένη ὑπωπιάζῃ με.

And the Lord said, Heare what the vniust iudge saith.

GenevaAnd the Lord said, Heare what the vnrighteous iudge saith.

εἶπεν δὲ ὁ κύριος· Ἀκούσατε τί ὁ κριτὴς τῆς ἀδικίας λέγει·

And shall not God auenge his owne elect, which crie day and night vnto him, thogh he beare long with them?

GenevaNow shall not God auenge his elect, which cry day and night vnto him, yea, though he suffer long for them?

ὁ δὲ θεὸς οὐ μὴ ποιήσῃ τὴν ἐκδίκησιν τῶν ἐκλεκτῶν αὐτοῦ τῶν βοώντων αὐτῷ ἡμέρας καὶ νυκτός, καὶ μακροθυμεῖ ἐπ’ αὐτοῖς;

I tell you that he wil auenge them speedily. Neuerthelesse, when the Son of man commeth, shall hee find faith on the earth?

GenevaI tell you he will auenge them quickly: but when the Sonne of man commeth, shall he finde faith on the earth?

λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι ποιήσει τὴν ἐκδίκησιν αὐτῶν ἐν τάχει. πλὴν ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἐλθὼν ἆρα εὑρήσει τὴν πίστιν ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς;

And he spake this parable vnto certaine which trusted in themselues that they were righteous, & despised other:

Εἶπεν δὲ καὶ πρός τινας τοὺς πεποιθότας ἐφ’ ἑαυτοῖς ὅτι εἰσὶν δίκαιοι καὶ ἐξουθενοῦντας τοὺς λοιποὺς τὴν παραβολὴν ταύτην·

Two men went vp into the Temple to pray, the one a Pharisee, and the other a Publicane.

Ἄνθρωποι δύο ἀνέβησαν εἰς τὸ ἱερὸν προσεύξασθαι, ὁ εἷς Φαρισαῖος καὶ ὁ ἕτερος τελώνης.

The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himselfe, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, vniust, adulterers, or euen as this Publicane.

ὁ Φαρισαῖος σταθεὶς πρὸς ἑαυτὸν ταῦτα προσηύχετο· Ὁ θεός, εὐχαριστῶ σοι ὅτι οὐκ εἰμὶ ὥσπερ οἱ λοιποὶ τῶν ἀνθρώπων, ἅρπαγες, ἄδικοι, μοιχοί, ἢ καὶ ὡς οὗτος ὁ τελώνης·

I fast twise in the weeke, I giue tithes of all that I possesse.

νηστεύω δὶς τοῦ σαββάτου, ἀποδεκατῶ πάντα ὅσα κτῶμαι.

And the Publicane standing afarre off, would not lift vp so much as his eyes vnto heauen: but smote vpon his breast, saying, God me mercifull to mee a sinner.

GenevaBut the Publican standing a farre off, woulde not lift vp so much as his eyes to heauen, but smote his brest, saying, O God, be mercifull to me a sinner.

ὁ δὲ τελώνης μακρόθεν ἑστὼς οὐκ ἤθελεν οὐδὲ τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς ἐπᾶραι εἰς τὸν οὐρανόν, ἀλλ’ ἔτυπτε τὸ στῆθος αὐτοῦ λέγων· Ὁ θεός, ἱλάσθητί μοι τῷ ἁμαρτωλῷ.

I tell you, this man went downe to his house iustified rather then the other: For euery one that exalteth himselfe, shall be abased: and hee that humbleth himselfe, shall be exalted.

λέγω ὑμῖν, κατέβη οὗτος δεδικαιωμένος εἰς τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ παρ’ ἐκεῖνον· ὅτι πᾶς ὁ ὑψῶν ἑαυτὸν ταπεινωθήσεται, ὁ δὲ ταπεινῶν ἑαυτὸν ὑψωθήσεται.

And they brought vnto him also infants, that he would touch them: but when his disciples saw it, they rebuked them.

Προσέφερον δὲ αὐτῷ καὶ τὰ βρέφη ἵνα αὐτῶν ἅπτηται· ἰδόντες δὲ οἱ μαθηταὶ ἐπετίμων αὐτοῖς.

But Iesus called them vnto him, and said, Suffer litle children to come vnto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdome of God.

ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς προσεκαλέσατο αὐτὰ λέγων· Ἄφετε τὰ παιδία ἔρχεσθαι πρός με καὶ μὴ κωλύετε αὐτά, τῶν γὰρ τοιούτων ἐστὶν ἡ βασιλεία τοῦ θεοῦ.

Uerely I say vnto you, whosoeuer shall not receiue the kingdome of God as a litle child, shal in no wise enter therein.

GenevaVerely I say vnto you, whosoeuer receiueth not the kingdome of God as a babe, he shall not enter therein.

ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν, ὃς ἂν μὴ δέξηται τὴν βασιλείαν τοῦ θεοῦ ὡς παιδίον, οὐ μὴ εἰσέλθῃ εἰς αὐτήν.

And a certaine ruler asked him, saying, Good master, what shall I doe to inherit eternall life?

GenevaThen a certaine ruler asked him, saying, Good Master, what ought I to doe, to inherite eternall life?

Καὶ ἐπηρώτησέν τις αὐτὸν ἄρχων λέγων· Διδάσκαλε ἀγαθέ, τί ποιήσας ζωὴν αἰώνιον κληρονομήσω;

And Iesus said vnto him, Why callest thou mee good? None is good saue one, that is God.

GenevaAnd Iesus said vnto him, Why callest thou me good? none is good, saue one, euen God.

εἶπεν δὲ αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς· Τί με λέγεις ἀγαθόν; οὐδεὶς ἀγαθὸς εἰ μὴ εἷς ὁ θεός.

Thou knowest the commaundements, Doe not commit adulterie, Doe not kill, Doe not steale, Doe not beare false witnesse, Honour thy father and thy mother.

GenevaThou knowest the comandements, Thou shalt not commit adulterie: Thou shalt not kill: Thou shalt not steale: Thou shalt not beare false witnes: Honour thy father and thy mother.

τὰς ἐντολὰς οἶδας· Μὴ μοιχεύσῃς, Μὴ φονεύσῃς, Μὴ κλέψῃς, Μὴ ψευδομαρτυρήσῃς, Τίμα τὸν πατέρα σου καὶ τὴν μητέρα.

And he said, All these haue I kept from my youth vp.

GenevaAnd hee saide, All these haue I kept from my youth.

ὁ δὲ εἶπεν· Ταῦτα πάντα ἐφύλαξα ἐκ νεότητος μου.

Now when Iesus heard these things, hee said vnto him, Yet lackest thou one thing: Sell all that thou hast, and distribute vnto the poore, and thou shalt haue treasure in heauen, and come, follow me.

ἀκούσας δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτῷ· Ἔτι ἕν σοι λείπει· πάντα ὅσα ἔχεις πώλησον καὶ διάδος πτωχοῖς, καὶ ἕξεις θησαυρὸν ἐν οὐρανοῖς, καὶ δεῦρο ἀκολούθει μοι.

And when he heard this, he was very sorowfull, for he was very rich.

GenevaBut when he heard those things, he was very heauie: for he was marueilous riche.

ὁ δὲ ἀκούσας ταῦτα περίλυπος ἐγενήθη, ἦν γὰρ πλούσιος σφόδρα.

And when Iesus saw that hee was very sorrowfull, he said, How hardly shal they that haue riches, enter into the kingdome of God?

GenevaAnd when Iesus sawe him very sorowfull, he said, With what difficultie shall they that haue riches, enter into the kingdome of God!

Ἰδὼν δὲ αὐτὸν ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν· Πῶς δυσκόλως οἱ τὰ χρήματα ἔχοντες εἰς τὴν βασιλείαν τοῦ θεοῦ εἰσπορεύονται·

For it is easier for a camel to goe thorow a needles eye, then for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.

GenevaSurely it is easier for a camel to go through a needles eye, then for a riche man to enter into the kingdome of God.

εὐκοπώτερον γάρ ἐστιν κάμηλον διὰ τρήματος βελόνης εἰσελθεῖν ἢ πλούσιον εἰς τὴν βασιλείαν τοῦ θεοῦ εἰσελθεῖν.

And they that heard it, said, Who then can be saued?

GenevaThen said they that heard it, And who then can be saued?

Εἶπαν δὲ οἱ ἀκούσαντες· Καὶ τίς δύναται σωθῆναι;

And he said, The things which are vnpossible with men, are possible with God.

GenevaAnd he said, The things which are vnpossible with men, are possible with God.

ὁ δὲ εἶπεν· Τὰ ἀδύνατα παρὰ ἀνθρώποις δυνατὰ παρὰ τῷ θεῷ ἐστιν.

Then Peter said, Loe, we haue left all, and followed thee.

GenevaThen Peter said, Loe, we haue left all, and haue followed thee.

Εἶπεν δὲ ὁ Πέτρος· Ἰδοὺ ἡμεῖς ἀφέντες τὰ ἴδια ἠκολουθήσαμέν σοι.

And he said vnto them, Uerily, I say vnto you, there is no man that hath left house, or parents, or brethren, or wife, or children, for the kingdome of Gods sake,

ὁ δὲ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς· Ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι οὐδείς ἐστιν ὃς ἀφῆκεν οἰκίαν ἢ γυναῖκα ἢ ἀδελφοὺς ἢ γονεῖς ἢ τέκνα ἕνεκεν τῆς βασιλείας τοῦ θεοῦ,

Who shall not receiue manifold more in this present time, and in the world to come life euerlasting.

ὃς οὐχὶ μὴ ἀπολάβῃ πολλαπλασίονα ἐν τῷ καιρῷ τούτῳ καὶ ἐν τῷ αἰῶνι τῷ ἐρχομένῳ ζωὴν αἰώνιον.

¶ Then hee tooke vnto him the twelue, and said vnto them, Behold, we goe vp to Hierusalem, and al things that are written by the Prophets concerning the sonne of man, shall be accomplished.

Παραλαβὼν δὲ τοὺς δώδεκα εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς· Ἰδοὺ ἀναβαίνομεν εἰς Ἰερουσαλήμ, καὶ τελεσθήσεται πάντα τὰ γεγραμμένα διὰ τῶν προφητῶν τῷ υἱῷ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου·

For he shall be deliuered vnto the Gentiles, and shall be mocked, and spitefully intreated, and spitted on:

GenevaFor he shall be deliuered vnto the Gentiles, and shalbe mocked, and shalbe spitefully entreated, and shalbe spitted on.

παραδοθήσεται γὰρ τοῖς ἔθνεσιν καὶ ἐμπαιχθήσεται καὶ ὑβρισθήσεται καὶ ἐμπτυσθήσεται,

And they shall scourge him, and put him to death, and the third day he shall rise againe.

GenevaAnd when they haue scourged him, they will put him to death: but the thirde day hee shall rise againe.

καὶ μαστιγώσαντες ἀποκτενοῦσιν αὐτόν, καὶ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τῇ τρίτῃ ἀναστήσεται.

And they vnderstood none of these things: and this saying was hid from them, neither knew they the things which were spoken.

καὶ αὐτοὶ οὐδὲν τούτων συνῆκαν, καὶ ἦν τὸ ῥῆμα τοῦτο κεκρυμμένον ἀπ’ αὐτῶν, καὶ οὐκ ἐγίνωσκον τὰ λεγόμενα.

¶ And it came to passe, that as he was come nigh vnto Iericho, a certaine blinde man sate by the way side, begging,

GenevaAnd it came to passe, that as he was come neere vnto Iericho, a certaine blinde man sate by the way side, begging.

Ἐγένετο δὲ ἐν τῷ ἐγγίζειν αὐτὸν εἰς Ἰεριχὼ τυφλός τις ἐκάθητο παρὰ τὴν ὁδὸν ἐπαιτῶν.

And hearing the multitude passe by, he asked what it meant.

GenevaAnd when he heard the people passe by, he asked what it meant.

ἀκούσας δὲ ὄχλου διαπορευομένου ἐπυνθάνετο τί εἴη τοῦτο·

And they tolde him that Iesus of Nazareth passeth by.

GenevaAnd they saide vnto him, that Iesus of Nazareth passed by.

ἀπήγγειλαν δὲ αὐτῷ ὅτι Ἰησοῦς ὁ Ναζωραῖος παρέρχεται.

And he cried, saying, Iesus thou sonne of Dauid, haue mercie on me.

GenevaThen hee cried, saying, Iesus the Sonne of Dauid, haue mercie on me.

καὶ ἐβόησεν λέγων· Ἰησοῦ υἱὲ Δαυίδ, ἐλέησόν με.

And they which went before, rebuked him, that hee should holde his peace: but hee cried so much the more, Thou Sonne of Dauid, haue mercie on mee.

GenevaAnd they which went before, rebuked him that he shoulde holde his peace, but he cried much more, O Sone of Dauid, haue mercie on me.

καὶ οἱ προάγοντες ἐπετίμων αὐτῷ ἵνα σιγήσῃ· αὐτὸς δὲ πολλῷ μᾶλλον ἔκραζεν· Υἱὲ Δαυίδ, ἐλέησόν με.

And Iesus stood and commanded him to be brought vnto him: and when he was come neere, he asked him,

GenevaAnd Iesus stoode stil, and commanded him to be brought vnto him. And when he was come neere, he asked him,

σταθεὶς δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἐκέλευσεν αὐτὸν ἀχθῆναι πρὸς αὐτόν. ἐγγίσαντος δὲ αὐτοῦ ἐπηρώτησεν αὐτόν·

Saying, What wilt thou that I shall doe vnto thee? And he said, Lord, that I may receiue my sight.

Τί σοι θέλεις ποιήσω; ὁ δὲ εἶπεν· Κύριε, ἵνα ἀναβλέψω.

And Iesus said vnto him, Receiue thy sight, thy faith hath saued thee.

GenevaAnd Iesus said vnto him, Receiue thy sight: thy faith hath saued thee.

καὶ ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτῷ· Ἀνάβλεψον· ἡ πίστις σου σέσωκέν σε.

And immediately he receiued his sight, and followed him, glorifying God: and all the people when they saw it, gaue praise vnto God.

GenevaThen immediatly he receiued his sight, and followed him, praysing God: and all the people, when they sawe this, gaue praise to God.

καὶ παραχρῆμα ἀνέβλεψεν, καὶ ἠκολούθει αὐτῷ δοξάζων τὸν θεόν. καὶ πᾶς ὁ λαὸς ἰδὼν ἔδωκεν αἶνον τῷ θεῷ.
