Judges 18
In those dayes there was no king in Israel: and in those daies the tribe of the Danites sought them an inheritance to dwel in: for vnto that day, all their inheritance had not fallen vnto them, among the tribes of Israel.
GenevaIn those dayes there was no King in Israel, and at the same time the tribe of Dan sought them an inheritance to dwell in: for vnto that time all their inheritance had not fallen vnto them among the tribes of Israel.
בַּ/יָּמִ֣ים הָ/הֵ֔ם אֵ֥ין מֶ֖לֶךְ בְּ/יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וּ/בַ/יָּמִ֣ים הָ/הֵ֗ם שֵׁ֣בֶט הַ/דָּנִ֞י מְבַקֶּשׁ ל֤/וֹ נַֽחֲלָה֙ לָ/שֶׁ֔בֶת כִּי֩ לֹֽא נָ֨פְלָה לּ֜/וֹ עַד הַ/יּ֥וֹם הַ/ה֛וּא בְּ/תוֹךְ שִׁבְטֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל בְּ/נַחֲלָֽה
And the children of Dan sent of their family, fiue men from their coasts, men of valour, from Zorah, and from Eshtaol, to spy out the land, and to search it, and they said vnto them, Goe, search the land: Who when they came to mount Ephraim, to the house of Micah, they lodged there.
GenevaTherefore the children of Dan sent of their familie, fiue men out of their coastes, euen men expert in warre, out of Zorah and Eshtaol, to viewe the lande and search it out, and saide vnto them, Goe, and search out the lande. Then they came to mount Ephraim to the house of Michah and lodged there.
וַ/יִּשְׁלְח֣וּ בְנֵי דָ֣ן מִֽ/מִּשְׁפַּחְתָּ֡/ם חֲמִשָּׁ֣ה אֲנָשִׁ֣ים מִ/קְצוֹתָ/ם֩ אֲנָשִׁ֨ים בְּנֵי חַ֜יִל מִ/צָּרְעָ֣ה וּ/מֵֽ/אֶשְׁתָּאֹ֗ל לְ/רַגֵּ֤ל אֶת הָ/אָ֨רֶץ֙ וּ/לְ/חָקְרָ֔/הּ וַ/יֹּאמְר֣וּ אֲלֵ/הֶ֔ם לְכ֖וּ חִקְר֣וּ אֶת הָ/אָ֑רֶץ וַ/יָּבֹ֤אוּ הַר אֶפְרַ֨יִם֙ עַד בֵּ֣ית מִיכָ֔ה וַ/יָּלִ֖ינוּ שָֽׁם
When they were by the house of Micah, they knew the voice of the yong man the Leuite: and they turned in thither, & said vnto him, Who brought thee hither? And what makest thou in this place? and what hast thou here?
GenevaWhen they were in the house of Michah, they knewe the voyce of the yong man the Leuite: and being turned in thither, they saide vnto him, Who brought thee hither? or what makest thou in this place? and what hast thou to doe here?
הֵ֚מָּה עִם בֵּ֣ית מִיכָ֔ה וְ/הֵ֣מָּה הִכִּ֔ירוּ אֶת ק֥וֹל הַ/נַּ֖עַר הַ/לֵּוִ֑י וַ/יָּס֣וּרוּ שָׁ֗ם וַ/יֹּ֤אמְרוּ ל/וֹ֙ מִֽי הֱבִיאֲ/ךָ֣ הֲלֹ֔ם וּ/מָֽה אַתָּ֥ה עֹשֶׂ֛ה בָּ/זֶ֖ה וּ/מַה לְּ/ךָ֥ פֹֽה
And hee said vnto them, Thus and thus dealeth Micah with me, and hath hired me, and I am his Priest.
GenevaAnd he answered them, Thus and thus dealeth Michah with me, and hath hired me, and I am his Priest.
וַ/יֹּ֣אמֶר אֲלֵ/הֶ֔ם כָּ/זֹ֣ה וְ/כָ/זֶ֔ה עָ֥שָׂה לִ֖/י מִיכָ֑ה וַ/יִּשְׂכְּרֵ֕/נִי וָ/אֱהִי ל֖/וֹ לְ/כֹהֵֽן
And they sayd vnto him, Aske counsell, we pray thee, of God, that we may know, whether our way which we goe, shall be prosperous.
GenevaAgaine they said vnto him, Aske counsell nowe of God, that we may knowe whether the way which we goe, shalbe prosperous.
וַ/יֹּ֥אמְרוּ ל֖/וֹ שְׁאַל נָ֣א בֵ/אלֹהִ֑ים וְ/נֵ֣דְעָ֔ה הֲ/תַצְלִ֣יחַ דַּרְכֵּ֔/נוּ אֲשֶׁ֥ר אֲנַ֖חְנוּ הֹלְכִ֥ים עָלֶֽי/הָ
And the Priest said vnto them, Goe in peace: before the LORD is your way wherein ye goe.
GenevaAnd the Priest sayde vnto them, Goe in peace: for the Lord guideth your way which ye goe.
וַ/יֹּ֧אמֶר לָ/הֶ֛ם הַ/כֹּהֵ֖ן לְכ֣וּ לְ/שָׁל֑וֹם נֹ֣כַח יְהוָ֔ה דַּרְכְּ/כֶ֖ם אֲשֶׁ֥ר תֵּֽלְכוּ בָֽ/הּ
¶ Then the fiue men departed, and came to Laish, and saw the people that were therein, how they dwelt carelesse, after the maner of the Zidonians, quiet and secure, and there was no magistrate in the land that might put them to shame in any thing, and they were farre from the Zidonians, and had no businesse with any man.
GenevaThen the fiue men departed and came to Laish, and sawe the people that were therein, which dwelt carelesse, after the maner of the Zidonians, quiet and sure, because no man made any trouble in the lande, or vsurped any dominion: also they were farre from the Zidonians, and had no businesse with other men.
וַ/יֵּלְכוּ֙ חֲמֵ֣שֶׁת הָ/אֲנָשִׁ֔ים וַ/יָּבֹ֖אוּ לָ֑יְשָׁ/ה וַ/יִּרְא֣וּ אֶת הָ/עָ֣ם אֲשֶׁר בְּ/קִרְבָּ֣/הּ יוֹשֶֽׁבֶת לָ֠/בֶטַח כְּ/מִשְׁפַּ֨ט צִדֹנִ֜ים שֹׁקֵ֣ט וּ/בֹטֵ֗חַ וְ/אֵין מַכְלִ֨ים דָּבָ֤ר בָּ/אָ֨רֶץ֙ יוֹרֵ֣שׁ עֶ֔צֶר וּ/רְחֹקִ֥ים הֵ֨מָּה֙ מִ/צִּ֣דֹנִ֔ים וְ/דָבָ֥ר אֵין לָ/הֶ֖ם עִם אָדָֽם
And they came vnto their brethren to Zorah, and Eshtaol: and their brethren said vnto them, What say yee?
GenevaSo they came againe vnto their brethren to Zorah and Eshtaol: and their brethren saide vnto them, What haue ye done?
וַ/יָּבֹ֨אוּ֙ אֶל אֲחֵי/הֶ֔ם צָרְעָ֖ה וְ/אֶשְׁתָּאֹ֑ל וַ/יֹּאמְר֥וּ לָ/הֶ֛ם אֲחֵי/הֶ֖ם מָ֥ה אַתֶּֽם
And they said, Arise, that we may goe vp against them: for we haue seene the land, and behold, it is very good: and are ye still? Bee not slothfull to goe, and to enter to possesse the land.
GenevaAnd they answered, Arise, that we may goe vp against them: for we haue seene the lande, and surely it is very good, and doe ye sit stil? be not slouthfull to goe and enter to possesse the lande:
וַ/יֹּאמְר֗וּ ק֚וּמָ/ה וְ/נַעֲלֶ֣ה עֲלֵי/הֶ֔ם כִּ֤י רָאִ֨ינוּ֙ אֶת הָ/אָ֔רֶץ וְ/הִנֵּ֥ה טוֹבָ֖ה מְאֹ֑ד וְ/אַתֶּ֣ם מַחְשִׁ֔ים אַל תֵּעָ֣צְל֔וּ לָ/לֶ֥כֶת לָ/בֹ֖א לָ/רֶ֥שֶׁת אֶת הָ/אָֽרֶץ
When ye goe, ye shall come vnto a people secure, and to a large land: for God hath giuen it into your handes: a place where there is no want of any thing, that is in the earth.
Geneva(If ye will goe, ye shall come vnto a carelesse people, and the countrey is large) for God hath giuen it into your hande. It is a place which doeth lacke nothing that is in the worlde.
כְּ/בֹאֲ/כֶ֞ם תָּבֹ֣אוּ אֶל עַ֣ם בֹּטֵ֗חַ וְ/הָ/אָ֨רֶץ֙ רַחֲבַ֣ת יָדַ֔יִם כִּֽי נְתָנָ֥/הּ אֱלֹהִ֖ים בְּ/יֶדְ/כֶ֑ם מָקוֹם֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר אֵֽין שָׁ֣ם מַחְס֔וֹר כָּל דָּבָ֖ר אֲשֶׁ֥ר בָּ/אָֽרֶץ
¶ And there went from thence of the family of the Danites out of Zorah, and out of Eshtaol, sixe hundred men, appoynted with weapons of warre.
GenevaThen there departed thence of the familie of the Danites, from Zorah and from Eshtaol, sixe hundreth men appointed with instruments of warre.
וַ/יִּסְע֤וּ מִ/שָּׁם֙ מִ/מִּשְׁפַּ֣חַת הַ/דָּנִ֔י מִ/צָּרְעָ֖ה וּ/מֵ/אֶשְׁתָּאֹ֑ל שֵֽׁשׁ מֵא֣וֹת אִ֔ישׁ חָג֖וּר כְּלֵ֥י מִלְחָמָֽה
And they went vp, and pitched in Kiriath-iearim, in Iudah: Wherefore they called that place Mahaneh-Dan, vnto this day: behold, it is behinde Kiriath-iearim.

וַֽ/יַּעֲל֗וּ וַֽ/יַּחֲנ֛וּ בְּ/קִרְיַ֥ת יְעָרִ֖ים בִּֽ/יהוּדָ֑ה עַל כֵּ֡ן קָרְאוּ֩ לַ/מָּק֨וֹם הַ/ה֜וּא מַחֲנֵה דָ֗ן עַ֚ד הַ/יּ֣וֹם הַ/זֶּ֔ה הִנֵּ֕ה אַחֲרֵ֖י קִרְיַ֥ת יְעָרִֽים
And they passed thence vnto mount Ephraim, and came vnto the house of Micah.

וַ/יַּעַבְר֥וּ מִ/שָּׁ֖ם הַר אֶפְרָ֑יִם וַ/יָּבֹ֖אוּ עַד בֵּ֥ית מִיכָֽה
¶ Then answered the fiue men that went to spie out the countrey of Laish, and saide vnto their brethren, Doe ye know that there is in these houses an Ephod, and Teraphim, and a grauen image, and a molten image? Now therefore consider what ye haue to doe.

וַֽ/יַּעֲנ֞וּ חֲמֵ֣שֶׁת הָ/אֲנָשִׁ֗ים הַ/הֹלְכִים֮ לְ/רַגֵּל֮ אֶת הָ/אָ֣רֶץ לַיִשׁ֒ וַ/יֹּֽאמְרוּ֙ אֶל אֲחֵי/הֶ֔ם הַ/יְדַעְתֶּ֗ם כִּ֠י יֵ֣שׁ בַּ/בָּתִּ֤ים הָ/אֵ֨לֶּה֙ אֵפ֣וֹד וּ/תְרָפִ֔ים וּ/פֶ֖סֶל וּ/מַסֵּכָ֑ה וְ/עַתָּ֖ה דְּע֥וּ מַֽה תַּעֲשֽׂוּ
And they turned thitherward, and came to the house of the yong man the Leuite, euen vnto the house of Micah, and saluted him.

And the six hundred men appointed with their weapons of war, which were of the children of Dan, stood by the entring of the gate.

וְ/שֵׁשׁ מֵא֣וֹת אִ֗ישׁ חֲגוּרִים֙ כְּלֵ֣י מִלְחַמְתָּ֔/ם נִצָּבִ֖ים פֶּ֣תַח הַ/שָּׁ֑עַר אֲשֶׁ֖ר מִ/בְּנֵי דָֽן
And the fiue men that went to spie out the land, went vp and came in thither, and tooke the grauen image, and the Ephod, and the Teraphim, and the molten image: and the Priest stood in the entring of the gate, with the sixe hundreth men that were appointed with weapons of warre.

וַֽ/יַּעֲל֞וּ חֲמֵ֣שֶׁת הָ/אֲנָשִׁ֗ים הַ/הֹלְכִים֮ לְ/רַגֵּ֣ל אֶת הָ/אָרֶץ֒ בָּ֣אוּ שָׁ֔מָּ/ה לָקְח֗וּ אֶת הַ/פֶּ֨סֶל֙ וְ/אֶת הָ֣/אֵפ֔וֹד וְ/אֶת הַ/תְּרָפִ֖ים וְ/אֶת הַ/מַּסֵּכָ֑ה וְ/הַ/כֹּהֵ֗ן נִצָּב֙ פֶּ֣תַח הַ/שַּׁ֔עַר וְ/שֵׁשׁ מֵא֣וֹת הָ/אִ֔ישׁ הֶ/חָג֖וּר כְּלֵ֥י הַ/מִּלְחָמָֽה
And these went into Micahs house, and fetched the carued image, the Ephod, and the Teraphim, and the molten image: then said the Priest vnto them, What doe ye?
GenevaAnd the other went into Michahs house and fet the grauen image, the Ephod, and the Teraphim, and the molten image. Then saide the Priest vnto them, What doe ye?
וְ/אֵ֗לֶּה בָּ֚אוּ בֵּ֣ית מִיכָ֔ה וַ/יִּקְחוּ֙ אֶת פֶּ֣סֶל הָ/אֵפ֔וֹד וְ/אֶת הַ/תְּרָפִ֖ים וְ/אֶת הַ/מַּסֵּכָ֑ה וַ/יֹּ֤אמֶר אֲלֵי/הֶם֙ הַ/כֹּהֵ֔ן מָ֥ה אַתֶּ֖ם עֹשִֽׂים
And they said vnto him, Hold thy peace, lay thine hand vpon thy mouth, and goe with vs, and bee to vs a father and a Priest: Is it better for thee to bee a Priest vnto the house of one man, or that thou be a Priest vnto a tribe and a family in Israel?
GenevaAnd they answered him, Holde thy peace: lay thine hande vpon thy mouth, and come with vs to be our father and Priest. Whether is it better that thou shouldest be a Priest vnto ye house of one man, or that thou shouldest be a Priest vnto a tribe and to a familie in Israel?
וַ/יֹּאמְרוּ֩ ל֨/וֹ הַחֲרֵ֜שׁ שִֽׂים יָדְ/ךָ֤ עַל פִּ֨י/ךָ֙ וְ/לֵ֣ךְ עִמָּ֔/נוּ וֶֽ/הְיֵה לָ֖/נוּ לְ/אָ֣ב וּ/לְ/כֹהֵ֑ן הֲ/ט֣וֹב הֱיוֹתְ/ךָ֣ כֹהֵ֗ן לְ/בֵית֙ אִ֣ישׁ אֶחָ֔ד א֚וֹ הֱיוֹתְ/ךָ֣ כֹהֵ֔ן לְ/שֵׁ֥בֶט וּ/לְ/מִשְׁפָּחָ֖ה בְּ/יִשְׂרָאֵֽל
And the Priests heart was glad, and he tooke the Ephod, and the Teraphim, and the grauen image, and went in the middest of the people.

וַ/יִּיטַב֙ לֵ֣ב הַ/כֹּהֵ֔ן וַ/יִּקַּח֙ אֶת הָ֣/אֵפ֔וֹד וְ/אֶת הַ/תְּרָפִ֖ים וְ/אֶת הַ/פָּ֑סֶל וַ/יָּבֹ֖א בְּ/קֶ֥רֶב הָ/עָֽם
So they turned, and departed, and put the little ones, and the cattell, and the cariage before them.
GenevaAnd they turned and departed, and put the children, and the cattell, and the substance before them.
וַ/יִּפְנ֖וּ וַ/יֵּלֵ֑כוּ וַ/יָּשִׂ֨ימוּ אֶת הַ/טַּ֧ף וְ/אֶת הַ/מִּקְנֶ֛ה וְ/אֶת הַ/כְּבוּדָּ֖ה לִ/פְנֵי/הֶֽם
¶ And when they were a good way from the house of Micah, the men that were in the houses neere to Micahs house, were gathered together, and ouertooke the children of Dan.
GenevaWhen they were farre off from the house of Michah, the men that were in the houses neere to Michahs house, gathered together, and pursued after the children of Dan,
הֵ֥מָּה הִרְחִ֖יקוּ מִ/בֵּ֣ית מִיכָ֑ה וְ/הָ/אֲנָשִׁ֗ים אֲשֶׁ֤ר בַּ/בָּתִּים֙ אֲשֶׁר֙ עִם בֵּ֣ית מִיכָ֔ה נִֽזְעֲק֔וּ וַ/יַּדְבִּ֖יקוּ אֶת בְּנֵי דָֽן
And they cried vnto the children of Dan: and they turned their faces, and said vnto Micah, What aileth thee, that thou commest with such a company?
GenevaAnd cryed vnto the children of Dan: who turned their faces, and said vnto Michah, What ayleth thee, that thou makest an outcrie?
וַֽ/יִּקְרְאוּ֙ אֶל בְּנֵי דָ֔ן וַ/יַּסֵּ֖בּוּ פְּנֵי/הֶ֑ם וַ/יֹּאמְר֣וּ לְ/מִיכָ֔ה מַה לְּ/ךָ֖ כִּ֥י נִזְעָֽקְתָּ
And he said, Yee haue taken away my gods which I made, and the Priest, and ye are gone away: and what haue I more? and what is this that yee say vnto me, What aileth thee?
GenevaAnd hee saide, Yee haue taken away my gods, which I made, and the Priest, and go your wayes: and what haue I more? howe then say ye vnto me, what ayleth thee?
וַ/יֹּ֡אמֶר אֶת אֱלֹהַ/י֩ אֲשֶׁר עָשִׂ֨יתִי לְקַחְתֶּ֧ם וְֽ/אֶת הַ/כֹּהֵ֛ן וַ/תֵּלְכ֖וּ וּ/מַה לִּ֣/י ע֑וֹד וּ/מַה זֶּ֛ה תֹּאמְר֥וּ אֵלַ֖/י מַה לָּֽ/ךְ
And the children of Dan said vnto him, Let not thy voyce bee heard among vs, lest angry fellowes run vpon thee, and thou lose thy life, with the liues of thy houshold.
GenevaAnd the children of Dan sayde vnto him, Let not thy voyce be heard among vs, least angrie fellowes runne vpon thee, and thou lose thy life with the liues of thine housholde.
וַ/יֹּאמְר֤וּ אֵלָי/ו֙ בְּנֵי דָ֔ן אַל תַּשְׁמַ֥ע קוֹלְ/ךָ֖ עִמָּ֑/נוּ פֶּֽן יִפְגְּע֣וּ בָ/כֶ֗ם אֲנָשִׁים֙ מָ֣רֵי נֶ֔פֶשׁ וְ/אָסַפְתָּ֥ה נַפְשְׁ/ךָ֖ וְ/נֶ֥פֶשׁ בֵּיתֶֽ/ךָ
And the children of Dan went their way: and when Micah sawe that they were too strong for him, he turned and went backe vnto his house.
GenevaSo the children of Dan went their wayes: and when Michah saw that they were too strong for him, hee turned, and went backe vnto his house.
וַ/יֵּלְכ֥וּ בְנֵי דָ֖ן לְ/דַרְכָּ֑/ם וַ/יַּ֣רְא מִיכָ֗ה כִּי חֲזָקִ֥ים הֵ֨מָּה֙ מִמֶּ֔/נּוּ וַ/יִּ֖פֶן וַ/יָּ֥שָׁב אֶל בֵּיתֽ/וֹ
And they tooke the things which Micah had made, and the Priest which hee had, and came vnto Laish, vnto a people that were at quiet, and secure, and they smote them with the edge of the sword, and burnt the citie with fire.

וְ/הֵ֨מָּה לָקְח֜וּ אֵ֧ת אֲשֶׁר עָשָׂ֣ה מִיכָ֗ה וְֽ/אֶת הַ/כֹּהֵן֮ אֲשֶׁ֣ר הָיָה ל/וֹ֒ וַ/יָּבֹ֣אוּ עַל לַ֗יִשׁ עַל עַם֙ שֹׁקֵ֣ט וּ/בֹטֵ֔חַ וַ/יַּכּ֥וּ אוֹתָ֖/ם לְ/פִי חָ֑רֶב וְ/אֶת הָ/עִ֖יר שָׂרְפ֥וּ בָ/אֵֽשׁ
And there was no deliuerer, because it was farre from Zidon, and they had no businesse with any man: and it was in the valley that lieth by Beth-rehob, and they built a citie, and dwelt therein.
GenevaAnd there was none to helpe, because Laish was farre from Zidon, and they had no businesse with other men: also it was in the valley that lyeth by Beth-rehob. After, they built the citie, and dwelt therein,
וְ/אֵ֨ין מַצִּ֜יל כִּ֧י רְֽחוֹקָה הִ֣יא מִ/צִּיד֗וֹן וְ/דָבָ֤ר אֵין לָ/הֶם֙ עִם אָדָ֔ם וְ/הִ֕יא בָּ/עֵ֖מֶק אֲשֶׁ֣ר לְ/בֵית רְח֑וֹב וַ/יִּבְנ֥וּ אֶת הָ/עִ֖יר וַ/יֵּ֥שְׁבוּ בָֽ/הּ
And they called the name of the city, Dan, after the name of Dan their father, who was borne vnto Israel: howbeit the name of the citie was Laish at the first.
GenevaAnd called the name of the citie Dan, after the name of Dan their father which was borne vnto Israel: howbeit the name of the city was Laish at the beginning.
וַ/יִּקְרְא֤וּ שֵׁם הָ/עִיר֙ דָּ֔ן בְּ/שֵׁם֙ דָּ֣ן אֲבִי/הֶ֔ם אֲשֶׁ֥ר יוּלַּ֖ד לְ/יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וְ/אוּלָ֛ם לַ֥יִשׁ שֵׁם הָ/עִ֖יר לָ/רִאשֹׁנָֽה
¶ And the children of Dan set vp the grauen image: and Ionathan the sonne of Gershom, the sonne of Manasseh, hee and his sonnes, were Priests to the tribe of Dan, vntill the day of the captiuitie of the land.
GenevaThen the children of Dan set them vp the grauen image: and Ionathan the sonne of Gershom, the sonne of Manasseh and his sonnes were the Priestes in the tribe of the Danites vntil the day of the captiuitie of the lande.
וַ/יָּקִ֧ימוּ לָ/הֶ֛ם בְּנֵי דָ֖ן אֶת הַ/פָּ֑סֶל וִ֠/יהוֹנָתָן בֶּן גֵּרְשֹׁ֨ם בֶּן מְשֶּׁ֜ה ה֣וּא וּ/בָנָ֗י/ו הָי֤וּ כֹהֲנִים֙ לְ/שֵׁ֣בֶט הַ/דָּנִ֔י עַד י֖וֹם גְּל֥וֹת הָ/אָֽרֶץ
