Chapter 21
Job 21
But Iob answered, and sayd,

וַ/יַּ֥עַן אִיּ֗וֹב וַ/יֹּאמַֽר
Heare diligently my speech, and let this be your consolations.

שִׁמְע֣וּ שָׁ֭מוֹעַ מִלָּתִ֑/י וּ/תְהִי זֹ֝֗את תַּנְח֥וּמֹֽתֵי/כֶֽם
Suffer me that I may speake, and after that I haue spoken, mocke on.

שָׂ֭אוּ/נִי וְ/אָנֹכִ֣י אֲדַבֵּ֑ר וְ/אַחַ֖ר דַּבְּרִ֣/י תַלְעִֽיג
As for mee, is my complaint to man? and if it were so, why should not my spirit be troubled?
GenevaDoe I direct my talke to man? If it were so, how should not my spirit be troubled?
הֶ֭/אָנֹכִי לְ/אָדָ֣ם שִׂיחִ֑/י וְ/אִם מַ֝דּ֗וּעַ לֹא תִקְצַ֥ר רוּחִֽ/י
Marke mee, and be astonished, and lay your hand vpon your mouth.

פְּנוּ אֵלַ֥/י וְ/הָשַׁ֑מּוּ וְ/שִׂ֖ימוּ יָ֣ד עַל פֶּֽה
Euen when I remember, I am afraid, and trembling taketh holde on my flesh.

וְ/אִם זָכַ֥רְתִּי וְ/נִבְהָ֑לְתִּי וְ/אָחַ֥ז בְּ֝שָׂרִ֗/י פַּלָּצֽוּת
Wherefore doe the wicked liue, become old, yea, are mightie in power?
GenevaWherefore do the wicked liue, and waxe olde, and grow in wealth?
מַדּ֣וּעַ רְשָׁעִ֣ים יִחְי֑וּ עָ֝תְק֗וּ גַּם גָּ֥בְרוּ חָֽיִל
Their seede is established in their sight with them, and their offspring before their eyes.

זַרְעָ֤/ם נָכ֣וֹן לִ/פְנֵי/הֶ֣ם עִמָּ֑/ם וְ֝/צֶאֱצָאֵי/הֶ֗ם לְ/עֵינֵי/הֶֽם
Their houses are safe from feare, neither is the rod of God vpon them.
GenevaTheir houses are peaceable without feare, and the rod of God is not vpon them.
בָּתֵּי/הֶ֣ם שָׁל֣וֹם מִ/פָּ֑חַד וְ/לֹ֤א שֵׁ֖בֶט אֱל֣וֹהַּ עֲלֵי/הֶֽם
Their bull gendreth and faileth not, their cow calueth, and casteth not her calfe.

שׁוֹר֣/וֹ עִ֭בַּר וְ/לֹ֣א יַגְעִ֑ל תְּפַלֵּ֥ט פָּ֝רָת֗/וֹ וְ/לֹ֣א תְשַׁכֵּֽל
They send foorth their little ones like a flocke, and their children dance.

יְשַׁלְּח֣וּ כַ֭/צֹּאן עֲוִילֵי/הֶ֑ם וְ֝/יַלְדֵי/הֶ֗ם יְרַקֵּדֽוּ/ן
They take the timbrell and harpe, and reioyce at the sound of the organe.

יִ֭שְׂאוּ כְּ/תֹ֣ף וְ/כִנּ֑וֹר וְ֝/יִשְׂמְח֗וּ לְ/ק֣וֹל עוּגָֽב
They spend their daies in wealth, and in a moment goe downe to the graue.
GenevaThey spend their dayes in wealth, and suddenly they go downe to the graue.
יבלו בַ/טּ֣וֹב יְמֵי/הֶ֑ם וּ֝/בְ/רֶ֗גַע שְׁא֣וֹל יֵחָֽתּוּ
Therefore they say vnto God, Depart from vs: for we desire not the knowledge of thy wayes.

What is the Almightie, that wee should serue him? and what profite should we haue, if we pray vnto him?

מַה שַׁדַּ֥י כִּֽי נַֽעַבְדֶ֑/נּוּ וּ/מַה נּ֝וֹעִ֗יל כִּ֣י נִפְגַּע בּֽ/וֹ
Loe, their good is not in their hand, the counsell of the wicked is farre from me.
GenevaLo, their wealth is not in their hand: therfore let the counsell of the wicked bee farre from me.
הֵ֤ן לֹ֣א בְ/יָדָ֣/ם טוּבָ֑/ם עֲצַ֥ת רְ֝שָׁעִ֗ים רָ֣חֲקָה מֶֽ/נִּי
How oft is the candle of the wicked put out? and how oft commeth their destruction vpon them? God distributeth sorrowes in his anger.

כַּ/מָּ֤ה נֵר רְשָׁ֘עִ֤ים יִדְעָ֗ךְ וְ/יָבֹ֣א עָלֵ֣י/מוֹ אֵידָ֑/ם חֲ֝בָלִ֗ים יְחַלֵּ֥ק בְּ/אַפּֽ/וֹ
They are as stubble before the winde, and as chaffe that the storme carieth away.

יִהְי֗וּ כְּ/תֶ֥בֶן לִ/פְנֵי ר֑וּחַ וּ֝/כְ/מֹ֗ץ גְּנָבַ֥תּ/וּ סוּפָֽה
God layeth vp his iniquitie for his children: he rewardeth him, and he shall know it.
GenevaGod wil lay vp the sorowe of the father for his children: when he rewardeth him, hee shall knowe it.
אֱל֗וֹהַּ יִצְפֹּן לְ/בָנָ֥י/ו אוֹנ֑/וֹ יְשַׁלֵּ֖ם אֵלָ֣י/ו וְ/יֵדָֽע
His eyes shall see his destruction, and he shall drinke of the wrath of the Almightie.

יִרְא֣וּ עינ/ו כִּיד֑/וֹ וּ/מֵ/חֲמַ֖ת שַׁדַּ֣י יִשְׁתֶּֽה
For what pleasure hath he in his house after him, when the number of his moneths is cut off in the middest?

כִּ֤י מַה חֶפְצ֣/וֹ בְּ/בֵית֣/וֹ אַחֲרָ֑י/ו וּ/מִסְפַּ֖ר חֳדָשָׁ֣י/ו חֻצָּֽצוּ
Shall any teach God knowledge? seeing he iudgeth those that are high.

הַ/לְ/אֵ֥ל יְלַמֶּד דָּ֑עַת וְ֝/ה֗וּא רָמִ֥ים יִשְׁפּֽוֹט
One dieth in his full strength, being wholly at ease and quiet.
GenevaOne dyeth in his full strength, being in all ease and prosperitie.
זֶ֗ה יָ֭מוּת בְּ/עֶ֣צֶם תֻּמּ֑/וֹ כֻּ֝לּ֗/וֹ שַׁלְאֲנַ֥ן וְ/שָׁלֵֽיו
His breasts are full of milke, and his bones are moistened with marrow.

עֲ֭טִינָי/ו מָלְא֣וּ חָלָ֑ב וּ/מֹ֖חַ עַצְמוֹתָ֣י/ו יְשֻׁקֶּֽה
And another dieth in the bitternesse of his soule, and neuer eateth with pleasure.

וְ/זֶ֗ה יָ֭מוּת בְּ/נֶ֣פֶשׁ מָרָ֑ה וְ/לֹֽא אָ֝כַ֗ל בַּ/טּוֹבָֽה
They shall lie downe alike in the dust, and the wormes shall couer them.
GenevaThey shall sleepe both in the dust, and the wormes shall couer them.
יַ֭חַד עַל עָפָ֣ר יִשְׁכָּ֑בוּ וְ֝/רִמָּ֗ה תְּכַסֶּ֥ה עֲלֵי/הֶֽם
Behold, I know your thoughts, and the deuices which yee wrongfully imagine against me.
GenevaBehold, I know your thoughts, and the enterprises, wherewith ye do me wrong.
הֵ֣ן יָ֭דַעְתִּי מַחְשְׁבֽוֹתֵי/כֶ֑ם וּ֝/מְזִמּ֗וֹת עָלַ֥/י תַּחְמֹֽסוּ
For ye say, where is the house of the prince? and where are the dwelling places of the wicked?
GenevaFor ye say, Where is the princes house? and where is the tabernacle of the wickeds dwelling?
כִּ֤י תֹֽאמְר֗וּ אַיֵּ֥ה בֵית נָדִ֑יב וְ֝/אַיֵּ֗ה אֹ֤הֶל מִשְׁכְּנ֬וֹת רְשָׁעִֽים
Haue ye not asked them that goe by the way? and doe ye not know their tokens?
GenevaMay ye not aske the that go by the way? and ye can not deny their signes.
הֲ/לֹ֣א שְׁ֭אֶלְתֶּם ע֣וֹבְרֵי דָ֑רֶךְ וְ֝/אֹתֹתָ֗/ם לֹ֣א תְנַכֵּֽרוּ
That the wicked is reserued to the day of destruction; they shall bee brought foorth to the day of wrath.
GenevaBut the wicked is kept vnto the day of destruction, and they shall be brought forth to the day of wrath.
כִּ֤י לְ/י֣וֹם אֵ֭יד יֵחָ֣שֶׂךְ רָ֑ע לְ/י֖וֹם עֲבָר֣וֹת יוּבָֽלוּ
Who shall declare his way to his face? and who shall repay him what he hath done?

מִֽי יַגִּ֣יד עַל פָּנָ֣י/ו דַּרְכּ֑/וֹ וְ/הֽוּא עָ֝שָׂ֗ה מִ֣י יְשַׁלֶּם לֽ/וֹ
Yet shall hee be brought to the graue, & shall remaine in the tombe.

וְ֭/הוּא לִ/קְבָר֣וֹת יוּבָ֑ל וְֽ/עַל גָּדִ֥ישׁ יִשְׁקֽוֹד
The cloudes of the valley shalbe sweete vnto him, and euery man shall draw after him, as there are innumerable before him.
GenevaThe slimie valley shalbe sweete vnto him, and euery man shall draw after him, as before him there were innumerable.
מָֽתְקוּ ל֗/וֹ רִגְבֵ֫י נָ֥חַל וְ֭/אַחֲרָי/ו כָּל אָדָ֣ם יִמְשׁ֑וֹךְ וּ֝/לְ/פָנָ֗י/ו אֵ֣ין מִסְפָּֽר
How then comfort ye me in vaine, seeing in your answeres there remaineth falshood?
GenevaHow then comfort ye me in vaine, seeing in your answeres there remaine but lyes?
וְ֭/אֵיךְ תְּנַחֲמ֣וּ/נִי הָ֑בֶל וּ֝/תְשֽׁוּבֹתֵי/כֶ֗ם נִשְׁאַר מָֽעַל
