Chapter 23
Genesis 23
And Sarah was an hundred and seuen and twenty yeeres olde: these were the yeeres of the life of Sarah.
GenevaWhen Sarah was an hundreth twentie and seuen yeere olde (so long liued she).
וַ/יִּהְיוּ֙ חַיֵּ֣י שָׂרָ֔ה מֵאָ֥ה שָׁנָ֛ה וְ/עֶשְׂרִ֥ים שָׁנָ֖ה וְ/שֶׁ֣בַע שָׁנִ֑ים שְׁנֵ֖י חַיֵּ֥י שָׂרָֽה
And Sarah died in Kiriath arba, the same is Hebron in the land of Canaan: And Abraham came to mourne for Sarah, and to weepe for her.
GenevaThen Sarah dyed in Kiriath-arba: the same is Hebron in the land of Canaan. and Abraham came to mourne for Sarah and to weepe for her.
וַ/תָּ֣מָת שָׂרָ֗ה בְּ/קִרְיַ֥ת אַרְבַּ֛ע הִ֥וא חֶבְר֖וֹן בְּ/אֶ֣רֶץ כְּנָ֑עַן וַ/יָּבֹא֙ אַבְרָהָ֔ם לִ/סְפֹּ֥ד לְ/שָׂרָ֖ה וְ/לִ/בְכֹּתָֽ/הּ
¶ And Abraham stood vp from before his dead, & spake vnto the sonnes of Heth, saying,
GenevaThen Abraham rose vp from the sight of his corps, and talked with the Hittites, saying,
וַ/יָּ֨קָם֙ אַבְרָהָ֔ם מֵ/עַ֖ל פְּנֵ֣י מֵת֑/וֹ וַ/יְדַבֵּ֥ר אֶל בְּנֵי חֵ֖ת לֵ/אמֹֽר
I am a stranger and a soiourner with you: giue me a possession of a burying place with you, that I may bury my dead out of my sight.
GenevaI am a stranger, and a forreiner among you, giue me a possession of buriall with you, that I may burie my dead out of my sight.
גֵּר וְ/תוֹשָׁ֥ב אָנֹכִ֖י עִמָּ/כֶ֑ם תְּנ֨וּ לִ֤/י אֲחֻזַּת קֶ֨בֶר֙ עִמָּ/כֶ֔ם וְ/אֶקְבְּרָ֥ה מֵתִ֖/י מִ/לְּ/פָנָֽ/י
And the children of Heth answered Abraham, saying vnto him,
GenevaThen the Hittites answered Abraham, saying vnto him,
וַ/יַּעֲנ֧וּ בְנֵי חֵ֛ת אֶת אַבְרָהָ֖ם לֵ/אמֹ֥ר לֽ/וֹ
Heare vs, my Lord, thou art a mightie Prince amongst vs: in the choise of our sepulchres bury thy dead: none of vs shall withhold from thee his sepulchre, but that thou mayest bury thy dead.
GenevaHeare vs, my lorde: thou art a prince of God among vs: in the chiefest of our sepulchres bury thy dead: none of vs shall forbid thee his sepulchre, but thou mayest bury thy dead therein.
שְׁמָעֵ֣/נוּ אֲדֹנִ֗/י נְשִׂ֨יא אֱלֹהִ֤ים אַתָּה֙ בְּ/תוֹכֵ֔/נוּ בְּ/מִבְחַ֣ר קְבָרֵ֔י/נוּ קְבֹ֖ר אֶת מֵתֶ֑/ךָ אִ֣ישׁ מִמֶּ֔/נּוּ אֶת קִבְר֛/וֹ לֹֽא יִכְלֶ֥ה מִמְּ/ךָ֖ מִ/קְּבֹ֥ר מֵתֶֽ/ךָ
And Abraham stood vp and bowed himselfe to the people of the land, euen to the children of Heth.
GenevaThen Abraham stoode vp, and bowed him selfe before the people of the land of the Hittites.
וַ/יָּ֧קָם אַבְרָהָ֛ם וַ/יִּשְׁתַּ֥חוּ לְ/עַם הָ/אָ֖רֶץ לִ/בְנֵי חֵֽת
And hee communed with them, saying, if it be your mind that I should bury my dead out of my sight, heare me, and entreat for me to Ephron the sonne of Zohar:
GenevaAnd he communed with them, saying, If it be your minde, that I shall bury my dead out of my sight, heare me, and intreate for me to Ephron the sonne of Zohar,
וַ/יְדַבֵּ֥ר אִתָּ֖/ם לֵ/אמֹ֑ר אִם יֵ֣שׁ אֶֽת נַפְשְׁ/כֶ֗ם לִ/קְבֹּ֤ר אֶת מֵתִ/י֙ מִ/לְּ/פָנַ֔/י שְׁמָע֕וּ/נִי וּ/פִגְעוּ לִ֖/י בְּ/עֶפְר֥וֹן בֶּן צֹֽחַר
That he may giue me the caue of Machpelah, which he hath, which is in the end of his field: for as much money as it is worth he shall giue it mee, for a possession of a burying place amongst you.
GenevaThat he would giue me ye caue of Machpelah, which he hath in the ende of his field: that he would giue it me for as much money as it is worth, for a possession to bury in among you.
וְ/יִתֶּן לִ֗/י אֶת מְעָרַ֤ת הַ/מַּכְפֵּלָה֙ אֲשֶׁר ל֔/וֹ אֲשֶׁ֖ר בִּ/קְצֵ֣ה שָׂדֵ֑/הוּ בְּ/כֶ֨סֶף מָלֵ֜א יִתְּנֶ֥/נָּה לִ֛/י בְּ/תוֹכְ/כֶ֖ם לַ/אֲחֻזַּת קָֽבֶר
And Ephron dwelt amongst the children of Heth. And Ephron the Hittite answered Abraham in the audience of the children of Heth, euen of all that went in at the gates of his citie, saying,
Geneva(For Ephron dwelt among the Hittites) Then Ephron the Hittite answered Abraham in the audience of all the Hittites that went in at the gates of his citie, saying,
וְ/עֶפְר֥וֹן יֹשֵׁ֖ב בְּ/ת֣וֹךְ בְּנֵי חֵ֑ת וַ/יַּעַן֩ עֶפְר֨וֹן הַ/חִתִּ֤י אֶת אַבְרָהָם֙ בְּ/אָזְנֵ֣י בְנֵי חֵ֔ת לְ/כֹ֛ל בָּאֵ֥י שַֽׁעַר עִיר֖/וֹ לֵ/אמֹֽר
Nay, my lord, heare mee: the field giue I thee, and the caue that is therein, I giue it thee, in the presence of the sonnes of my people giue I it thee: bury thy dead.
GenevaNo, my Lord, heare me: the fielde giue I thee, and the caue, that therein is, I giue it thee: euen in the presence of the sonnes of my people giue I it thee, to bury thy dead.
לֹֽא אֲדֹנִ֣/י שְׁמָעֵ֔/נִי הַ/שָּׂדֶה֙ נָתַ֣תִּי לָ֔/ךְ וְ/הַ/מְּעָרָ֥ה אֲשֶׁר בּ֖/וֹ לְ/ךָ֣ נְתַתִּ֑י/הָ לְ/עֵינֵ֧י בְנֵי עַמִּ֛/י נְתַתִּ֥י/הָ לָּ֖/ךְ קְבֹ֥ר מֵתֶֽ/ךָ
And Abraham bowed downe himselfe before the people of the land.
GenevaThen Abraham bowed himselfe before the people of the land,
וַ/יִּשְׁתַּ֨חוּ֙ אַבְרָהָ֔ם לִ/פְנֵ֖י עַ֥ם הָ/אָֽרֶץ
And he spake vnto Ephron in the audience of the people of the land, saying, But if thou wilt giue it, I pray thee, heare mee: I will giue thee money for the field: take it of me, and I will bury my dead there.
GenevaAnd spake vnto Ephron in the audience of the people of the countrey, saying, Seeing thou wilt giue it, I pray thee, heare me, I will giue the price of the fielde: receiue it of me, and I will bury my dead there.
וַ/יְדַבֵּ֨ר אֶל עֶפְר֜וֹן בְּ/אָזְנֵ֤י עַם הָ/אָ֨רֶץ֙ לֵ/אמֹ֔ר אַ֛ךְ אִם אַתָּ֥ה ל֖וּ שְׁמָעֵ֑/נִי נָתַ֜תִּי כֶּ֤סֶף הַ/שָּׂדֶה֙ קַ֣ח מִמֶּ֔/נִּי וְ/אֶקְבְּרָ֥ה אֶת מֵתִ֖/י שָֽׁמָּ/ה
And Ephron answered Abraham, saying vnto him,
GenevaEphron then answered Abraham, saying vnto him,
וַ/יַּ֧עַן עֶפְר֛וֹן אֶת אַבְרָהָ֖ם לֵ/אמֹ֥ר לֽ/וֹ
My lord, hearken vnto mee: the land is worth foure hundred shekels of siluer: what is that betwixt mee and thee? bury therefore thy dead.
GenevaMy lord, hearken vnto me: ye land is worth foure hundreth shekels of siluer: what is that betweene me and thee? bury therefore thy dead.
אֲדֹנִ֣/י שְׁמָעֵ֔/נִי אֶרֶץ֩ אַרְבַּ֨ע מֵאֹ֧ת שֶֽׁקֶל כֶּ֛סֶף בֵּינִ֥/י וּ/בֵֽינְ/ךָ֖ מַה הִ֑וא וְ/אֶת מֵתְ/ךָ֖ קְבֹֽר
And Abraham hearkened vnto Ephron, and Abraham weighed to Ephron the siluer, which he had named, in the audience of the sonnes of Heth, foure hundred shekels of siluer, currant money with the merchant.
GenevaSo Abraham hearkened vnto Ephron, and Abraham weyed to Ephron the siluer, which he had named, in the audience of the Hittites, euen foure hundreth siluer shekels of currant money among marchants.
וַ/יִּשְׁמַ֣ע אַבְרָהָם֮ אֶל עֶפְרוֹן֒ וַ/יִּשְׁקֹ֤ל אַבְרָהָם֙ לְ/עֶפְרֹ֔ן אֶת הַ/כֶּ֕סֶף אֲשֶׁ֥ר דִּבֶּ֖ר בְּ/אָזְנֵ֣י בְנֵי חֵ֑ת אַרְבַּ֤ע מֵאוֹת֙ שֶׁ֣קֶל כֶּ֔סֶף עֹבֵ֖ר לַ/סֹּחֵֽר
¶ And the field of Ephron which was in Machpelah, which was before Mamre, the fielde and the caue which was therein, and all the trees that were in the field, that were in all the borders round about, were made sure
GenevaSo the fielde of Ephron which was in Machpelah, and ouer against Mamre, euen the field and the caue that was therein, and all the trees that were in the fielde, which were in all the borders round about, was made sure
וַ/יָּ֣קָם שְׂדֵ֣ה עֶפְר֗וֹן אֲשֶׁר֙ בַּ/מַּכְפֵּלָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֖ר לִ/פְנֵ֣י מַמְרֵ֑א הַ/שָּׂדֶה֙ וְ/הַ/מְּעָרָ֣ה אֲשֶׁר בּ֔/וֹ וְ/כָל הָ/עֵץ֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר בַּ/שָּׂדֶ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר בְּ/כָל גְּבֻל֖/וֹ סָבִֽיב
Unto Abraham for a possession in the presence of the children of Heth, before all that went in at the gates of his Citie.
GenevaVnto Abraham for a possession, in ye sight of the Hittites, euen of all that went in at the gates of his citie.
לְ/אַבְרָהָ֥ם לְ/מִקְנָ֖ה לְ/עֵינֵ֣י בְנֵי חֵ֑ת בְּ/כֹ֖ל בָּאֵ֥י שַֽׁעַר עִירֽ/וֹ
And after this Abraham buried Sarah his wife in the caue of the field of Machpelah, before Mamre: the same is Hebron in the land of Canaan.
GenevaAnd after this, Abraham buried Sarah his wife in the caue of the fielde of Machpelah ouer against Mamre: the same is Hebron in the land of Canaan.
וְ/אַחֲרֵי כֵן֩ קָבַ֨ר אַבְרָהָ֜ם אֶת שָׂרָ֣ה אִשְׁתּ֗/וֹ אֶל מְעָרַ֞ת שְׂדֵ֧ה הַ/מַּכְפֵּלָ֛ה עַל פְּנֵ֥י מַמְרֵ֖א הִ֣וא חֶבְר֑וֹן בְּ/אֶ֖רֶץ כְּנָֽעַן
And the field, and the caue that is therein, were made sure vnto Abraham, for a possession of a burying place, by the sonnes of Heth.
GenevaThus the fielde and the caue, that is therein, was made sure vnto Abraham for a possession of buriall by the Hittites.
וַ/יָּ֨קָם הַ/שָּׂדֶ֜ה וְ/הַ/מְּעָרָ֧ה אֲשֶׁר בּ֛/וֹ לְ/אַבְרָהָ֖ם לַ/אֲחֻזַּת קָ֑בֶר מֵ/אֵ֖ת בְּנֵי חֵֽת
