Chapter 4
Galatians 4
Now I say, that the heire, as long as hee is a child, differeth nothing from a seruant, though hee bee Lord of all,
GenevaThen I say, that the heire as long as hee is a childe, differeth nothing from a seruant, though he be Lord of all,
But is vnder tutors and gouernours vntill the time appointed of the father.
GenevaBut is vnder tutours and gouernours, vntil the time appointed of the Father.
Euen so we, when wee were children, were in bondage vnder the Elements of the world:
GenevaEuen so, we when wee were children, were in bondage vnder the rudiments of the world.
But when the fulnes of the time was come, God sent foorth his Sonne made of a woman, made vnder the Law,
GenevaBut when the fulnesse of time was come, God sent forth his Sonne made of a woman, and made vnder the Lawe,
To redeeme them that were vnder the Law, that we might receiue the adoption of sonnes.
GenevaThat hee might redeeme them which were vnder the Law, that we might receiue the adoption of the sonnes.
And because yee are sonnes, God hath sent foorth the spirit of his Sonne into your hearts, crying Abba, Father.
GenevaAnd because ye are sonnes, God hath sent foorth the Spirit of his Sonne into your heartes, which crieth, Abba, Father.
Wherefore thou art no more a seruant, but a sonne; and if a sonne, then an heire of God through Christ.
GenevaWherefore, thou art no more a seruant, but a sonne: now if thou be a sone, thou art also the heire of God through Christ.
Howbeit, then when ye knew not God, yee did seruice vnto them which by nature are no Gods.
GenevaBut euen then, when ye knewe not God, yee did seruice vnto them, which by nature are not gods:
But now after that yee haue knowen God, or rather are knowen of God, how turne ye againe to the weak and beggerly Elements, whereunto ye desire againe to be in bondage?
GenevaBut now seeing ye knowe God, yea, rather are knowen of God, howe turne ye againe vnto impotent and beggerly rudiments, whereunto as from the beginning ye wil be in bondage againe?
νῦν δὲ γνόντες θεόν, μᾶλλον δὲ γνωσθέντες ὑπὸ θεοῦ, πῶς ἐπιστρέφετε πάλιν ἐπὶ τὰ ἀσθενῆ καὶ πτωχὰ στοιχεῖα, οἷς πάλιν ἄνωθεν δουλεύειν θέλετε;
Yee obserue dayes, and moneths, and times, and yeeres.
GenevaYe obserue dayes, and moneths, and times and yeeres.
I am afraide of you, lest I haue bestowed vpon you labour in vaine.
GenevaI am in feare of you, lest I haue bestowed on you labour in vaine.
Brethren, I beseech you, be as I am; for I am as ye are, ye haue not iniured me at all.
GenevaBe ye as I (for I am euen as you) brethren, I beseech you: ye haue not hurt me at all.
Ye know how through infirmitie of the flesh, I preached the Gospel vnto you at the first.
GenevaAnd ye know, how through infirmitie of the flesh, I preached ye Gospel vnto you at the first.
And my temptation which was in my flesh ye despised not, nor reiected, but receiued mee as an Angel of God, euen as Christ Iesus.
GenevaAnd the trial of me which was in my flesh, ye despised not, neither abhorred: but ye receiued me as an Angel of God, yea, as Christ Iesus.
Where is then the blessednes you spake of? for I beare you record, that if it had bin possible, ye would haue plucked out your own eyes, and haue giuen them to me.
GenevaWhat was then your felicitie? for I beare you recorde, that if it had bene possible, ye would haue plucked out your owne eyes, and haue giuen them vnto me.
Am I therefore become your enemie, because I tell you the trueth?
GenevaAm I therefore become your enemie, because I tell you the trueth?
ὥστε ἐχθρὸς ὑμῶν γέγονα ἀληθεύων ὑμῖν;
They zelously affect you, but not well: yea, they would exclude you, that you might affect them.
GenevaThey are ielous ouer you amisse: yea, they woulde exclude you, that ye shoulde altogether loue them.
But it is good to bee zealously affected alwayes in a good thing, and not onely when I am present with you.
GenevaBut it is a good thing to loue earnestly alwayes in a good thing, and not onely when I am present with you,
My litle children, of whom I trauaile in birth againe, vntill Christ bee formed in you:
GenevaMy litle children, of whome I trauaile in birth againe, vntill Christ be formed in you.
I desire to bee present with you now, and to change my voyce, for I stand in doubt of you.
GenevaAnd I would I were with you nowe, that I might change my voyce: for I am in doubt of you.
Tell me, ye that desire to be vnder the Law, doe ye not heare the Law?
GenevaTell me, ye that will be vnder the Law, doe ye not heare the Lawe?
Λέγετέ μοι, οἱ ὑπὸ νόμον θέλοντες εἶναι, τὸν νόμον οὐκ ἀκούετε;
For it is written, that Abraham had two sonnes, the one by a bondmaid, the other by a freewoman.
GenevaFor it is written, that Abraham had two sonnes, one by a seruant, and one by a free woman.
But he who was of the bondwoman, was borne after the flesh: but hee of the freewoman, was by promise.
GenevaBut he which was of the seruant, was borne after the flesh: and he which was of the free woman, was borne by promise.
Which things are an Allegorie; for these are the two Couenants; the one from the mount Sinai, which gendereth to bondage, which is Agar.
GenevaBy the which things another thing is meant: for these mothers are the two testaments, the one which is Agar of mount Sina, which gendreth vnto bondage.
For this Agar is mount Sinai in Arabia, and answereth to Ierusalem, which now is, and is in bondage with her children.
Geneva(For Agar or Sina is a mountaine in Arabia, and it answereth to Hierusalem which nowe is) and she is in bondage with her children.
But Ierusalem which is aboue is free, which is the mother of vs all.
GenevaBut Hierusalem, which is aboue, is free: which is the mother of vs all.
For it is written, Reioyce thou barren that bearest not, breake foorth and cry thou that traueilest not; for the desolate hath many moe children then she which hath an husband.
GenevaFor it is written, Reioyce thou barren that bearest no children: breake forth, and cry, thou that trauailest not: for the desolate hath many moe children, then she which hath an husband.
Now wee, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise.
GenevaTherefore, brethren, wee are after the maner of Isaac, children of the promise.
But as then hee that was borne after the flesh, persecuted him that was borne after the Spirit, euen so it is now.
GenevaBut as then hee that was borne after the flesh, persecuted him that was borne after the Spirit, euen so it is nowe.
Neuerthelesse, what saith the Scripture? Cast out the bondwoman and her sonne: for the son of the bondwoman shall not bee heire with the son of the freewoman.
GenevaBut what sayth the Scripture? Put out the seruant and her sonne: for the sonne of the seruant shall not be heire with the sonne of the free woman.
So then, brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman, but of the free.
GenevaThen brethren, we are not children of the seruant, but of the free woman.
