Chapter 18
Exodus 18
When Iethro the Priest of Midian, Moses father in law, heard of all that God had done for Moses, and for Israel his people, and that the LORD had brought Israel out of Egypt:
GenevaWhen Iethro the Priest of Midian Moses father in lawe heard all that God had done for Moses, and for Israel his people, and howe the Lord had brought Israel out of Egypt,
וַ/יִּשְׁמַ֞ע יִתְר֨וֹ כֹהֵ֤ן מִדְיָן֙ חֹתֵ֣ן מֹשֶׁ֔ה אֵת֩ כָּל אֲשֶׁ֨ר עָשָׂ֤ה אֱלֹהִים֙ לְ/מֹשֶׁ֔ה וּ/לְ/יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל עַמּ֑/וֹ כִּֽי הוֹצִ֧יא יְהוָ֛ה אֶת יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל מִ/מִּצְרָֽיִם
Then Iethro Moses father in law tooke Zipporah Moses wife, after he had sent her backe,
GenevaThen Iethro the father in lawe of Moses, tooke Zipporah Moses wife, (after he had sent her away)
וַ/יִּקַּ֗ח יִתְרוֹ֙ חֹתֵ֣ן מֹשֶׁ֔ה אֶת צִפֹּרָ֖ה אֵ֣שֶׁת מֹשֶׁ֑ה אַחַ֖ר שִׁלּוּחֶֽי/הָ
And her two sonnes, of which the name of the one was Gershom: for he said, I haue bene an alien in a strange land.
GenevaAnd her two sonnes, (whereof the one was called Gershom: for he sayd, I haue bene an aliant in a strange land:
וְ/אֵ֖ת שְׁנֵ֣י בָנֶ֑י/הָ אֲשֶׁ֨ר שֵׁ֤ם הָֽ/אֶחָד֙ גֵּֽרְשֹׁ֔ם כִּ֣י אָמַ֔ר גֵּ֣ר הָיִ֔יתִי בְּ/אֶ֖רֶץ נָכְרִיָּֽה
And the name of the other was Eliezer: for the God of my father, said he, was mine helpe, and deliuered me from the sword of Pharaoh.

וְ/שֵׁ֥ם הָ/אֶחָ֖ד אֱלִיעֶ֑זֶר כִּֽי אֱלֹהֵ֤י אָבִ/י֙ בְּ/עֶזְרִ֔/י וַ/יַּצִּלֵ֖/נִי מֵ/חֶ֥רֶב פַּרְעֹֽה
And Iethro Moses father in law came with his sonnes and his wife vnto Moses into the wildernes, where he encamped at the mount of God.
GenevaAnd Iethro Moses father in law came with his two sonnes, and his wife vnto Moses into the wildernes, where he camped by ye mout of God.
וַ/יָּבֹ֞א יִתְר֨וֹ חֹתֵ֥ן מֹשֶׁ֛ה וּ/בָנָ֥י/ו וְ/אִשְׁתּ֖/וֹ אֶל מֹשֶׁ֑ה אֶל הַ/מִּדְבָּ֗ר אֲשֶׁר ה֛וּא חֹנֶ֥ה שָׁ֖ם הַ֥ר הָ/אֱלֹהִֽים
And he said vnto Moses, I thy father in law Iethro am come vnto thee, and thy wife, and her two sonnes with her.
GenevaAnd he said to Moses, I thy father in law Iethro am come to thee, and thy wife and her two sonnes with her.
וַ/יֹּ֨אמֶר֙ אֶל מֹשֶׁ֔ה אֲנִ֛י חֹתֶנְ/ךָ֥ יִתְר֖וֹ בָּ֣א אֵלֶ֑י/ךָ וְ/אִ֨שְׁתְּ/ךָ֔ וּ/שְׁנֵ֥י בָנֶ֖י/הָ עִמָּֽ/הּ
¶ And Moses went out to meete his father in law, and did obeysance, and kissed him: and they asked each other of their welfare, and they came into the tent.
GenevaAnd Moses went out to meete his father in law, and did obeisance and kissed him, and eche asked other of his welfare: and they came into the tent.
וַ/יֵּצֵ֨א מֹשֶׁ֜ה לִ/קְרַ֣את חֹֽתְנ֗/וֹ וַ/יִּשְׁתַּ֨חוּ֙ וַ/יִּשַּׁק ל֔/וֹ וַ/יִּשְׁאֲל֥וּ אִישׁ לְ/רֵעֵ֖/הוּ לְ/שָׁל֑וֹם וַ/יָּבֹ֖אוּ הָ/אֹֽהֱלָ/ה
And Moses told his father in law, all that the LORD had done vnto Pharaoh, and to the Egyptians for Israels sake, and all the trauaile that had come vpon them by the way, and how the LORD deliuered them.
GenevaThen Moses told his father in law all that the Lord had done vnto Pharaoh, and to the Egyptians for Israels sake, and all the trauaile that had come vnto them by the way, and howe the Lord deliuered them.
וַ/יְסַפֵּ֤ר מֹשֶׁה֙ לְ/חֹ֣תְנ֔/וֹ אֵת֩ כָּל אֲשֶׁ֨ר עָשָׂ֤ה יְהוָה֙ לְ/פַרְעֹ֣ה וּ/לְ/מִצְרַ֔יִם עַ֖ל אוֹדֹ֣ת יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל אֵ֤ת כָּל הַ/תְּלָאָה֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר מְצָאָ֣תַ/ם בַּ/דֶּ֔רֶךְ וַ/יַּצִּלֵ֖/ם יְהוָֽה
And Iethro reioyced for all the goodnesse which the LORD had done to Israel: whom he had deliuered out of the hand of the Egyptians.
GenevaAnd Iethro reioyced at all the goodnesse, which the Lord had shewed to Israel, and because he had deliuered them out of the hande of the Egyptians.
וַ/יִּ֣חַדְּ יִתְר֔וֹ עַ֚ל כָּל הַ/טּוֹבָ֔ה אֲשֶׁר עָשָׂ֥ה יְהוָ֖ה לְ/יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל אֲשֶׁ֥ר הִצִּיל֖/וֹ מִ/יַּ֥ד מִצְרָֽיִם
And Iethro said, Blessed be the LORD, who hath deliuered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of Pharaoh, who hath deliuered the people from vnder the hand of the Egyptians.
GenevaTherfore Iethro sayd, Blessed be the Lord who hath deliuered you out of the hande of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of Pharaoh: who hath also deliuered the people from vnder the hand of the Egyptians.
וַ/יֹּאמֶר֮ יִתְרוֹ֒ בָּר֣וּךְ יְהוָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֨ר הִצִּ֥יל אֶתְ/כֶ֛ם מִ/יַּ֥ד מִצְרַ֖יִם וּ/מִ/יַּ֣ד פַּרְעֹ֑ה אֲשֶׁ֤ר הִצִּיל֙ אֶת הָ/עָ֔ם מִ/תַּ֖חַת יַד מִצְרָֽיִם
Now I know that the LORD is greater then all gods: for in the thing wherein they dealt proudly, hee was aboue them.
GenevaNow I know that the Lord is greater then all the gods: for as they haue dealt proudly with them, so are they recompensed.
עַתָּ֣ה יָדַ֔עְתִּי כִּֽי גָד֥וֹל יְהוָ֖ה מִ/כָּל הָ/אֱלֹהִ֑ים כִּ֣י בַ/דָּבָ֔ר אֲשֶׁ֥ר זָד֖וּ עֲלֵי/הֶֽם
And Iethro, Moses father in law, tooke a burnt offering and sacrifices for God: and Aaron came, and all the Elders of Israel, to eat bread with Moses father in law before God.
GenevaThen Iethro Moses father in lawe tooke burnt offerings and sacrifices to offer vnto God. And Aaron and all the Elders of Israel came to eat bread with Moses father in law before God.
וַ/יִּקַּ֞ח יִתְר֨וֹ חֹתֵ֥ן מֹשֶׁ֛ה עֹלָ֥ה וּ/זְבָחִ֖ים לֵֽ/אלֹהִ֑ים וַ/יָּבֹ֨א אַהֲרֹ֜ן וְ/כֹ֣ל זִקְנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל לֶ/אֱכָל לֶ֛חֶם עִם חֹתֵ֥ן מֹשֶׁ֖ה לִ/פְנֵ֥י הָ/אֱלֹהִֽים
¶ And it came to passe on the morrow, that Moses sate to iudge the people: and the people stood by Moses, from the morning vnto the euening.
GenevaNow on the morow, when Moses sate to iudge the people, the people stoode about Moses from morning vnto euen.
וַ/יְהִי֙ מִֽ/מָּחֳרָ֔ת וַ/יֵּ֥שֶׁב מֹשֶׁ֖ה לִ/שְׁפֹּ֣ט אֶת הָ/עָ֑ם וַ/יַּעֲמֹ֤ד הָ/עָם֙ עַל מֹשֶׁ֔ה מִן הַ/בֹּ֖קֶר עַד הָ/עָֽרֶב
And when Moses father in law saw all that he did to the people, he said, What is this thing that thou doest to the people? Why sittest thou thy selfe alone, and all the people stand by thee from morning vnto euen?
GenevaAnd when Moses father in law saw all that he did to the people, he sayde, What is this that thou doest to the people? why sittest thou thy selfe alone, and all the people stande about thee from morning vnto euen?
וַ/יַּרְא֙ חֹתֵ֣ן מֹשֶׁ֔ה אֵ֛ת כָּל אֲשֶׁר ה֥וּא עֹשֶׂ֖ה לָ/עָ֑ם וַ/יֹּ֗אמֶר מָֽה הַ/דָּבָ֤ר הַ/זֶּה֙ אֲשֶׁ֨ר אַתָּ֤ה עֹשֶׂה֙ לָ/עָ֔ם מַדּ֗וּעַ אַתָּ֤ה יוֹשֵׁב֙ לְ/בַדֶּ֔/ךָ וְ/כָל הָ/עָ֛ם נִצָּ֥ב עָלֶ֖י/ךָ מִן בֹּ֥קֶר עַד עָֽרֶב
And Moses said vnto his father in law, Because the people come vnto me to enquire of God.
GenevaAnd Moses sayd vnto his father in law, Because the people come vnto me to seeke God.
וַ/יֹּ֥אמֶר מֹשֶׁ֖ה לְ/חֹתְנ֑/וֹ כִּֽי יָבֹ֥א אֵלַ֛/י הָ/עָ֖ם לִ/דְרֹ֥שׁ אֱלֹהִֽים
When they haue a matter, they come vnto mee, and I iudge betweene one and another, and I doe make them know the statutes of God and his Lawes.
GenevaWhen they haue a matter, they come vnto me, and I iudge betweene one and another, and declare the ordinances of God, and his lawes.
כִּֽי יִהְיֶ֨ה לָ/הֶ֤ם דָּבָר֙ בָּ֣א אֵלַ֔/י וְ/שָׁ֣פַטְתִּ֔י בֵּ֥ין אִ֖ישׁ וּ/בֵ֣ין רֵעֵ֑/הוּ וְ/הוֹדַעְתִּ֛י אֶת חֻקֵּ֥י הָ/אֱלֹהִ֖ים וְ/אֶת תּוֹרֹתָֽי/ו
And Moses father in law saide vnto him, The thing that thou doest, is not good.
GenevaBut Moses father in law said vnto him, The thing which thou doest, is not well.
וַ/יֹּ֛אמֶר חֹתֵ֥ן מֹשֶׁ֖ה אֵלָ֑י/ו לֹא טוֹב֙ הַ/דָּבָ֔ר אֲשֶׁ֥ר אַתָּ֖ה עֹשֶֽׂה
Thou wilt surely weare away, both thou, and this people that is with thee: for this thing is too heauy for thee; thou art not able to performe it thy selfe alone.
GenevaThou both weariest thy selfe greatly, and this people that is with thee: for the thing is too heauie for thee: thou art not able to doe it thy selfe alone.
נָבֹ֣ל תִּבֹּ֔ל גַּם אַתָּ֕ה גַּם הָ/עָ֥ם הַ/זֶּ֖ה אֲשֶׁ֣ר עִמָּ֑/ךְ כִּֽי כָבֵ֤ד מִמְּ/ךָ֙ הַ/דָּבָ֔ר לֹא תוּכַ֥ל עֲשֹׂ֖/הוּ לְ/בַדֶּֽ/ךָ
Hearken now vnto my voyce, I will giue thee counsell, and God shall be with thee: Be thou for the people to Godward, that thou mayest bring the causes vnto God:
GenevaHeare nowe my voyce, (I will giue thee counsell, and God shalbe with thee) be thou for the people to Godwarde, and report thou the causes vnto God,
עַתָּ֞ה שְׁמַ֤ע בְּ/קֹלִ/י֙ אִיעָ֣צְ/ךָ֔ וִ/יהִ֥י אֱלֹהִ֖ים עִמָּ֑/ךְ הֱיֵ֧ה אַתָּ֣ה לָ/עָ֗ם מ֚וּל הָֽ/אֱלֹהִ֔ים וְ/הֵבֵאתָ֥ אַתָּ֛ה אֶת הַ/דְּבָרִ֖ים אֶל הָ/אֱלֹהִֽים
And thou shalt teach them ordinances and lawes, and shalt shew them the way wherein they must walke, and the worke that they must doe.
GenevaAnd admonish them of the ordinances, and of the lawes, and shew them the way, wherein they must walke, and the worke that they must do.
וְ/הִזְהַרְתָּ֣ה אֶתְ/הֶ֔ם אֶת הַ/חֻקִּ֖ים וְ/אֶת הַ/תּוֹרֹ֑ת וְ/הוֹדַעְתָּ֣ לָ/הֶ֗ם אֶת הַ/דֶּ֨רֶךְ֙ יֵ֣לְכוּ בָ֔/הּ וְ/אֶת הַֽ/מַּעֲשֶׂ֖ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר יַעֲשֽׂוּ/ן
Moreouer thou shalt prouide out of all the people able men, such as feare God, men of trueth, hating couetousnesse, and place such ouer them, to bee rulers of thousands, and rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tennes.
GenevaMoreouer, prouide thou among al the people men of courage, fearing God, men dealing truely, hating couetousnesse: and appoynt such ouer them to be rulers ouer thousandes, rulers ouer hundreths, rulers ouer fifties, and rulers ouer tennes.
וְ/אַתָּ֣ה תֶחֱזֶ֣ה מִ/כָּל הָ֠/עָם אַנְשֵׁי חַ֜יִל יִרְאֵ֧י אֱלֹהִ֛ים אַנְשֵׁ֥י אֱמֶ֖ת שֹׂ֣נְאֵי בָ֑צַע וְ/שַׂמְתָּ֣ עֲלֵ/הֶ֗ם שָׂרֵ֤י אֲלָפִים֙ שָׂרֵ֣י מֵא֔וֹת שָׂרֵ֥י חֲמִשִּׁ֖ים וְ/שָׂרֵ֥י עֲשָׂרֹֽת
And let them iudge the people at all seasons: and it shall bee that euery great matter they shall bring vnto thee, but euery small matter they shal iudge: so shall it be easier for thy selfe, and they shall beare the burden with thee.
GenevaAnd let them iudge the people at all seasons: but euery great matter let them bring vnto thee, and let them iudge all small causes: so shall it be easier for thee, when they shall beare the burden with thee.
וְ/שָׁפְט֣וּ אֶת הָ/עָם֮ בְּ/כָל עֵת֒ וְ/הָיָ֞ה כָּל הַ/דָּבָ֤ר הַ/גָּדֹל֙ יָבִ֣יאוּ אֵלֶ֔י/ךָ וְ/כָל הַ/דָּבָ֥ר הַ/קָּטֹ֖ן יִשְׁפְּטוּ הֵ֑ם וְ/הָקֵל֙ מֵֽ/עָלֶ֔י/ךָ וְ/נָשְׂא֖וּ אִתָּֽ/ךְ
If thou shalt doe this thing, and God command thee so, then thou shalt bee able to endure, and all this people shall also goe to their place in peace.
GenevaIf thou do this thing, (and God so command thee) both thou shalt be able to endure, and all this people shall also go quietly to their place.
אִ֣ם אֶת הַ/דָּבָ֤ר הַ/זֶּה֙ תַּעֲשֶׂ֔ה וְ/צִוְּ/ךָ֣ אֱלֹהִ֔ים וְ/יָֽכָלְתָּ֖ עֲמֹ֑ד וְ/גַם֙ כָּל הָ/עָ֣ם הַ/זֶּ֔ה עַל מְקֹמ֖/וֹ יָבֹ֥א בְ/שָׁלֽוֹם
So Moses hearkened to the voice of his father in law, and did all that he had said.
GenevaSo Moses obeyed the voyce of his father in law, and did all that he had sayd:
וַ/יִּשְׁמַ֥ע מֹשֶׁ֖ה לְ/ק֣וֹל חֹתְנ֑/וֹ וַ/יַּ֕עַשׂ כֹּ֖ל אֲשֶׁ֥ר אָמָֽר
And Moses chose able men out of all Israel, and made them heads ouer the people, rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tennes.
GenevaAnd Moses chose men of courage out of all Israel, and made them heads ouer the people, rulers ouer thousandes, rulers ouer hundreths, rulers ouer fifties, and rulers ouer tennes.
וַ/יִּבְחַ֨ר מֹשֶׁ֤ה אַנְשֵׁי חַ֨יִל֙ מִ/כָּל יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וַ/יִּתֵּ֥ן אֹתָ֛/ם רָאשִׁ֖ים עַל הָ/עָ֑ם שָׂרֵ֤י אֲלָפִים֙ שָׂרֵ֣י מֵא֔וֹת שָׂרֵ֥י חֲמִשִּׁ֖ים וְ/שָׂרֵ֥י עֲשָׂרֹֽת
And they iudged the people at all seasons: the hard causes they brought vnto Moses, but euery small matter they iudged themselues.
GenevaAnd they iudged the people at all seasons, but they brought the hard causes vnto Moses: for they iudged all small matters themselues.
וְ/שָׁפְט֥וּ אֶת הָ/עָ֖ם בְּ/כָל עֵ֑ת אֶת הַ/דָּבָ֤ר הַ/קָּשֶׁה֙ יְבִיא֣וּ/ן אֶל מֹשֶׁ֔ה וְ/כָל הַ/דָּבָ֥ר הַ/קָּטֹ֖ן יִשְׁפּוּט֥וּ הֵֽם
¶ And Moses let his father in law depart, and he went his way into his owne land.
GenevaAfterward Moses let his father in law depart, and he went into his countrey.
וַ/יְשַׁלַּ֥ח מֹשֶׁ֖ה אֶת חֹתְנ֑/וֹ וַ/יֵּ֥לֶךְ ל֖/וֹ אֶל אַרְצֽ/וֹ
