Chapter 28
1 Samuel 28
And it came to passe in those dayes, that the Philistines gathered their armies together for warfare, to fight with Israel: And Achish said vnto Dauid, Knowe thou assuredly, that thou shalt goe out with me to battell, thou, and thy men.
GenevaNowe at that time the Philistims assembled their bandes and armie to fight with Israel: therfore Achish said to Dauid, Be sure, thou shalt go out with me to the battel, thou, and thy men.
וַֽ/יְהִי֙ בַּ/יָּמִ֣ים הָ/הֵ֔ם וַ/יִּקְבְּצ֨וּ פְלִשְׁתִּ֤ים אֶת מַֽחֲנֵי/הֶם֙ לַ/צָּבָ֔א לְ/הִלָּחֵ֖ם בְּ/יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וַ/יֹּ֤אמֶר אָכִישׁ֙ אֶל דָּוִ֔ד יָדֹ֣עַ תֵּדַ֗ע כִּ֤י אִתִּ/י֙ תֵּצֵ֣א בַֽ/מַּחֲנֶ֔ה אַתָּ֖ה וַ/אֲנָשֶֽׁי/ךָ
And Dauid said to Achish, Surely thou shalt know what thy seruant can doe. And Achish said to Dauid, Therfore will I make thee keeper of mine head for euer.
GenevaAnd Dauid said to Achish, Surely thou shalt knowe, what thy seruant can doe. And Achish sayde to Dauid, Surely I will make thee keeper of mine head for euer.
וַ/יֹּ֤אמֶר דָּוִד֙ אֶל אָכִ֔ישׁ לָ/כֵן֙ אַתָּ֣ה תֵדַ֔ע אֵ֥ת אֲשֶׁר יַעֲשֶׂ֖ה עַבְדֶּ֑/ךָ וַ/יֹּ֤אמֶר אָכִישׁ֙ אֶל דָּוִ֔ד לָ/כֵ֗ן שֹׁמֵ֧ר לְ/רֹאשִׁ֛/י אֲשִֽׂימְ/ךָ֖ כָּל הַ/יָּמִֽים
¶ Now Samuel was dead, and all Israel had lamented him, and buried him in Ramah, euen in his owne citie: and Saul had put away those that had familiar spirits, and the wyzards, out of the land.

וּ/שְׁמוּאֵ֣ל מֵ֔ת וַ/יִּסְפְּדוּ ל/וֹ֙ כָּל יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וַ/יִּקְבְּרֻ֥/הוּ בָ/רָמָ֖ה וּ/בְ/עִיר֑/וֹ וְ/שָׁא֗וּל הֵסִ֛יר הָ/אֹב֥וֹת וְ/אֶת הַ/יִּדְּעֹנִ֖ים מֵ/הָ/אָֽרֶץ
And the Philistines gathered themselues together, and came and pitched in Shunem: and Saul gathered all Israel together, and they pitched in Gilboa.
GenevaThen the Philistims assembled themselues, and came, and pitched in Shunem: and Saul assembled all Israel, and they pitched in Gilboa.
וַ/יִּקָּבְצ֣וּ פְלִשְׁתִּ֔ים וַ/יָּבֹ֖אוּ וַ/יַּחֲנ֣וּ בְ/שׁוּנֵ֑ם וַ/יִּקְבֹּ֤ץ שָׁאוּל֙ אֶת כָּל יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וַֽ/יַּחֲנ֖וּ בַּ/גִּלְבֹּֽעַ
And when Saul saw the hoste of the Philistines, he was afraid, and his heart greatly trembled.
GenevaAnd when Saul saw the hoste of the Philistims, he was afraid, and his heart was sore astonied.
וַ/יַּ֥רְא שָׁא֖וּל אֶת מַחֲנֵ֣ה פְלִשְׁתִּ֑ים וַ/יִּרָ֕א וַ/יֶּחֱרַ֥ד לִבּ֖/וֹ מְאֹֽד
And when Saul enquired of the LORD, the LORD answered him not, neither by dreames, nor by Urim, nor by Prophets.
GenevaTherefore Saul asked counsel of the Lord, and the Lord answered him not, neither by dreames, nor by Vrim, nor yet by Prophets.
וַ/יִּשְׁאַ֤ל שָׁאוּל֙ בַּֽ/יהוָ֔ה וְ/לֹ֥א עָנָ֖/הוּ יְהוָ֑ה גַּ֧ם בַּ/חֲלֹמ֛וֹת גַּ֥ם בָּ/אוּרִ֖ים גַּ֥ם בַּ/נְּבִיאִֽם
¶ Then said Saul vnto his seruants, Seeke me a woman that hath a familiar spirit, that I may goe to her, and enquire of her. And his seruant said to him, Beholde, there is a woman that hath a familiar spirit at Endor.
GenevaThen saide Saul vnto his seruants, Seeke me a woman that hath a familiar spirite, that I may goe to her, and aske of her. And his seruants said to him, Beholde, there is a woman at En-dor that hath a familiar spirit.
וַ/יֹּ֨אמֶר שָׁא֜וּל לַ/עֲבָדָ֗י/ו בַּקְּשׁוּ לִ/י֙ אֵ֣שֶׁת בַּעֲלַת א֔וֹב וְ/אֵלְכָ֥ה אֵלֶ֖י/הָ וְ/אֶדְרְשָׁה בָּ֑/הּ וַ/יֹּאמְר֤וּ עֲבָדָי/ו֙ אֵלָ֔י/ו הִנֵּ֛ה אֵ֥שֶׁת בַּֽעֲלַת א֖וֹב בְּ/עֵ֥ין דּֽוֹר
And Saul disguised himselfe, and put on other raiment, and hee went, and two men with him, and they came to the woman by night, and he said, I pray thee diuine vnto me by the familiar spirit, and bring me him vp whom I shall name vnto thee.

וַ/יִּתְחַפֵּ֣שׂ שָׁא֗וּל וַ/יִּלְבַּשׁ֙ בְּגָדִ֣ים אֲחֵרִ֔ים וַ/יֵּ֣לֶךְ ה֗וּא וּ/שְׁנֵ֤י אֲנָשִׁים֙ עִמּ֔/וֹ וַ/יָּבֹ֥אוּ אֶל הָ/אִשָּׁ֖ה לָ֑יְלָה וַ/יֹּ֗אמֶר קסומי נָ֥א לִ/י֙ בָּ/א֔וֹב וְ/הַ֣עֲלִי לִ֔/י אֵ֥ת אֲשֶׁר אֹמַ֖ר אֵלָֽיִ/ךְ
And the woman saide vnto him, Beholde, thou knowest what Saul hath done, how hee hath cut off those that haue familiar spirits, and the wyzards out of the land: wherefore then layest thou a snare for my life, to cause me to die?
GenevaAnd the woman saide vnto him, Beholde, thou knowest what Saul hath done, how he hath destroyed the sorcerers, and the southsayers out of the land: wherefore then seekest thou to take me in a snare to cause me to die?
וַ/תֹּ֨אמֶר הָֽ/אִשָּׁ֜ה אֵלָ֗י/ו הִנֵּ֨ה אַתָּ֤ה יָדַ֨עְתָּ֙ אֵ֣ת אֲשֶׁר עָשָׂ֣ה שָׁא֔וּל אֲשֶׁ֥ר הִכְרִ֛ית אֶת הָ/אֹב֥וֹת וְ/אֶת הַ/יִּדְּעֹנִ֖י מִן הָ/אָ֑רֶץ וְ/לָ/מָ֥ה אַתָּ֛ה מִתְנַקֵּ֥שׁ בְּ/נַפְשִׁ֖/י לַ/הֲמִיתֵֽ/נִי
And Saul sware to her by the LORD, saying, As the LORD liueth, there shall no punishment happen to thee for this thing.
GenevaAnd Saul sware to her by the Lord, saying, As the Lord liueth, no harme shall come to thee for this thing.
וַ/יִּשָּׁ֤בַֽע לָ/הּ֙ שָׁא֔וּל בַּֽ/יהוָ֖ה לֵ/אמֹ֑ר חַי יְהוָ֕ה אִֽם יִקְּרֵ֥/ךְ עָוֺ֖ן בַּ/דָּבָ֥ר הַ/זֶּֽה
Then said the woman, Whome shall I bring vp vnto thee? and he said, Bring me vp Samuel.
GenevaThen said the woman, Whom shall I bring vp vnto thee? And he answered, Bring me vp Samuel.
וַ/תֹּ֨אמֶר֙ הָֽ/אִשָּׁ֔ה אֶת מִ֖י אַֽעֲלֶה לָּ֑/ךְ וַ/יֹּ֕אמֶר אֶת שְׁמוּאֵ֖ל הַֽעֲלִי לִֽ/י
And when the woman saw Samuel, she cried with a lowd voyce; and the woman spake to Saul, saying, Why hast thou deceiued me? for thou art Saul.
GenevaAnd when the woman sawe Samuel, she cryed with a loude voyce, and the woman spake to Saul, saying, Why hast thou deceiued me? for thou art Saul.
וַ/תֵּ֤רֶא הָֽ/אִשָּׁה֙ אֶת שְׁמוּאֵ֔ל וַ/תִּזְעַ֖ק בְּ/ק֣וֹל גָּד֑וֹל וַ/תֹּאמֶר֩ הָ/אִשָּׁ֨ה אֶל שָׁא֧וּל לֵ/אמֹ֛ר לָ֥/מָּה רִמִּיתָ֖/נִי וְ/אַתָּ֥ה שָׁאֽוּל
And the king sayd vnto her, Be not afraid: for what sawest thou? And the woman said vnto Saul, I saw gods ascending out of the earth.
GenevaAnd the King said vnto her, Be not afraid: for what sawest thou? And the woman said vnto Saul, I saw gods ascending vp out of the earth.
וַ/יֹּ֨אמֶר לָ֥/הּ הַ/מֶּ֛לֶךְ אַל תִּֽירְאִ֖י כִּ֣י מָ֣ה רָאִ֑ית וַ/תֹּ֤אמֶר הָֽ/אִשָּׁה֙ אֶל שָׁא֔וּל אֱלֹהִ֥ים רָאִ֖יתִי עֹלִ֥ים מִן הָ/אָֽרֶץ
And he said vnto her, What forme is he of? And she said, An old man commeth vp, and he is couered with a mantle. And Saul perceiued that it was Samuel, and hee stouped with his face to the ground, and bowed himselfe.
GenevaThen he said vnto her, What facion is hee of? And she answered, An olde man commeth vp lapped in a mantel: and Saul knewe that it was Samuel, and he enclined his face to the grounde, and bowed him selfe.
וַ/יֹּ֤אמֶר לָ/הּ֙ מַֽה תָּאֳר֔/וֹ וַ/תֹּ֗אמֶר אִ֤ישׁ זָקֵן֙ עֹלֶ֔ה וְ/ה֥וּא עֹטֶ֖ה מְעִ֑יל וַ/יֵּ֤דַע שָׁאוּל֙ כִּֽי שְׁמוּאֵ֣ל ה֔וּא וַ/יִּקֹּ֥ד אַפַּ֛יִם אַ֖רְצָ/ה וַ/יִּשְׁתָּֽחוּ
¶ And Samuel said to Saul, Why hast thou disquieted me, to bring me vp? And Saul answered, I am sore distressed; for the Philistins make war against me, and God is departed from me, and answereth me no more, neither by Prophets, nor by dreames: therefore I haue called thee, that thou mayst make knowen vnto me, what I shall doe.
GenevaAnd Samuel said to Saul, Why hast thou disquieted me, to bring me vp? Then Saul answered, I am in great distresse: for the Philistims make warre against me, and God is departed from me, and answereth me no more, neither by Prophetes, neither by dreames: therefore I haue called thee, that thou mayest tell me, what I shall doe.
וַ/יֹּ֤אמֶר שְׁמוּאֵל֙ אֶל שָׁא֔וּל לָ֥/מָּה הִרְגַּזְתַּ֖/נִי לְ/הַעֲל֣וֹת אֹתִ֑/י וַ/יֹּ֣אמֶר שָׁ֠אוּל צַר לִ֨/י מְאֹ֜ד וּ/פְלִשְׁתִּ֣ים נִלְחָמִ֣ים בִּ֗/י וֵֽ/אלֹהִ֞ים סָ֤ר מֵֽ/עָלַ/י֙ וְ/לֹֽא עָנָ֣/נִי ע֗וֹד גַּ֤ם בְּ/יַֽד הַ/נְּבִיאִם֙ גַּם בַּ֣/חֲלֹמ֔וֹת וָ/אֶקְרָאֶ֣/ה לְ/ךָ֔ לְ/הוֹדִיעֵ֖/נִי מָ֥ה אֶעֱשֶֽׂה
Then said Samuel, Wherefore then doest thou aske of mee, seeing the LORD is departed from thee, and is become thine enemy?
GenevaThen said Samuel, Wherefore then doest thou aske of me, seeing the Lord is gone from thee, and is thine enemie?
וַ/יֹּ֣אמֶר שְׁמוּאֵ֔ל וְ/לָ֖/מָּה תִּשְׁאָלֵ֑/נִי וַ/יהוָ֛ה סָ֥ר מֵ/עָלֶ֖י/ךָ וַ/יְהִ֥י עָרֶֽ/ךָ
And the LORD hath done to him, as hee spake by mee: for the LORD hath rent the kingdome out of thine hand, and giuen it to thy neighbour, euen to Dauid:
GenevaEuen the Lord hath done to him, as hee spake by mine hande: for the Lord will rent the kingdome out of thine hande, and giue it thy neighbour Dauid.
וַ/יַּ֤עַשׂ יְהוָה֙ ל֔/וֹ כַּ/אֲשֶׁ֖ר דִּבֶּ֣ר בְּ/יָדִ֑/י וַ/יִּקְרַ֨ע יְהוָ֤ה אֶת הַ/מַּמְלָכָה֙ מִ/יָּדֶ֔/ךָ וַֽ/יִּתְּנָ֖/הּ לְ/רֵעֲ/ךָ֥ לְ/דָוִֽד
Because thou obeiedst not the voice of the LORD, nor executedst his fierce wrath vpon Amalek, therefore hath the LORD done this thing vnto thee this day.
GenevaBecause thou obeyedst not the voyce of the Lord, nor executedst his fierce wrath vpon the Amalekites, therefore hath the Lord done this vnto thee this day.
כַּ/אֲשֶׁ֤ר לֹֽא שָׁמַ֨עְתָּ֙ בְּ/ק֣וֹל יְהוָ֔ה וְ/לֹֽא עָשִׂ֥יתָ חֲרוֹן אַפּ֖/וֹ בַּ/עֲמָלֵ֑ק עַל כֵּן֙ הַ/דָּבָ֣ר הַ/זֶּ֔ה עָשָֽׂה לְ/ךָ֥ יְהוָ֖ה הַ/יּ֥וֹם הַ/זֶּֽה
Moreouer, the LORD will also deliuer Israel with thee, into the hand of the Philistines: and to morrow shalt thou and thy sonnes bee with mee: the LORD also shall deliuer the hoste of Israel into the hand of the Philistines.
GenevaMoreouer the Lord wil deliuer Israel with thee into the handes of the Philistims: and to morowe shalt thou and thy sonnes be with me, and the Lord shall giue the hoste of Israel into the handes of the Philistims.
וְ/יִתֵּ֣ן יְ֠הוָה גַּ֣ם אֶת יִשְׂרָאֵ֤ל עִמְּ/ךָ֙ בְּ/יַד פְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים וּ/מָחָ֕ר אַתָּ֥ה וּ/בָנֶ֖י/ךָ עִמִּ֑/י גַּ֚ם אֶת מַחֲנֵ֣ה יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל יִתֵּ֥ן יְהוָ֖ה בְּ/יַד פְּלִשְׁתִּֽים
Then Saul fell straightway all along on the earth, and was sore afraid, because of the words of Samuel, & there was no strength in him: for he had eaten no bread all the day, nor al the night.
GenevaThen Saul fell streight way all along on the earth, and was sore afraide because of the wordes of Samuel, so that there was no strength in him: for he had eaten no bread all the day nor all the night.
וַ/יְמַהֵ֣ר שָׁא֗וּל וַ/יִּפֹּ֤ל מְלֹא קֽוֹמָת/וֹ֙ אַ֔רְצָ/ה וַ/יִּרָ֥א מְאֹ֖ד מִ/דִּבְרֵ֣י שְׁמוּאֵ֑ל גַּם כֹּ֨חַ֙ לֹא הָ֣יָה ב֔/וֹ כִּ֣י לֹ֤א אָכַל֙ לֶ֔חֶם כָּל הַ/יּ֖וֹם וְ/כָל הַ/לָּֽיְלָה
¶ And the woman came vnto Saul, and saw that he was sore troubled, and sayd vnto him, Behold, thine handmayd hath obeyed thy voice, and I haue put my life in my hand, and haue hearkened vnto thy words which thou spakest vnto me:
GenevaThen the woman came vnto Saul, and sawe that he was sore troubled, and said vnto him, See, thine handmaide hath obeyed thy voyce, and I haue put my soule in mine hande, and haue obeyed thy wordes which thou saydest vnto me.
וַ/תָּב֤וֹא הָֽ/אִשָּׁה֙ אֶל שָׁא֔וּל וַ/תֵּ֖רֶא כִּי נִבְהַ֣ל מְאֹ֑ד וַ/תֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלָ֗י/ו הִנֵּ֨ה שָׁמְעָ֤ה שִׁפְחָֽתְ/ךָ֙ בְּ/קוֹלֶ֔/ךָ וָ/אָשִׂ֤ים נַפְשִׁ/י֙ בְּ/כַפִּ֔/י וָֽ/אֶשְׁמַע֙ אֶת דְּבָרֶ֔י/ךָ אֲשֶׁ֥ר דִּבַּ֖רְתָּ אֵלָֽ/י
Now therefore, I pray thee, hearken thou also vnto the voyce of thine handmaid, & let me set a morsel of bread before thee; & eat, that thou mayest haue strength, when thou goest on thy way.
GenevaNow therefore, I pray thee, hearke thou also vnto ye voyce of thine handmaid, and let me set a morsell of bread before thee, that thou mayest eat and get thee strength, and go on thy iourney.
וְ/עַתָּ֗ה שְׁמַֽע נָ֤א גַם אַתָּה֙ בְּ/ק֣וֹל שִׁפְחָתֶ֔/ךָ וְ/אָשִׂ֧מָה לְ/פָנֶ֛י/ךָ פַּת לֶ֖חֶם וֶ/אֱכ֑וֹל וִ/יהִ֤י בְ/ךָ֙ כֹּ֔חַ כִּ֥י תֵלֵ֖ךְ בַּ/דָּֽרֶךְ
But hee refused, and said, I will not eate. But his seruants together with the woman compelled him, and he hearkened vnto their voyce: so he arose from the earth, & sate vpon the bed.
GenevaBut he refused, and said, I will not eate: but his seruants and the woman together compelled him, and he obeyed their voyce: so he arose from the earth, and sate on the bed.
וַ/יְמָאֵ֗ן וַ/יֹּ֨אמֶר֙ לֹ֣א אֹכַ֔ל וַ/יִּפְרְצוּ ב֤/וֹ עֲבָדָי/ו֙ וְ/גַם הָ֣/אִשָּׁ֔ה וַ/יִּשְׁמַ֖ע לְ/קֹלָ֑/ם וַ/יָּ֨קָם֙ מֵֽ/הָ/אָ֔רֶץ וַ/יֵּ֖שֶׁב אֶל הַ/מִּטָּֽה
And the woman had a fat calfe in the house, and she hasted, and killed it, and tooke flower and kneaded it, and did bake vnleauened bread thereof.

וְ/לָ/אִשָּׁ֤ה עֵֽגֶל מַרְבֵּק֙ בַּ/בַּ֔יִת וַ/תְּמַהֵ֖ר וַ/תִּזְבָּחֵ֑/הוּ וַ/תִּקַּח קֶ֣מַח וַ/תָּ֔לָשׁ וַ/תֹּפֵ֖/הוּ מַצּֽוֹת
And she brought it before Saul, and before his seruants, and they did eate: then they arose vp, and went away that night.

וַ/תַּגֵּ֧שׁ לִ/פְנֵֽי שָׁא֛וּל וְ/לִ/פְנֵ֥י עֲבָדָ֖י/ו וַ/יֹּאכֵ֑לוּ וַ/יָּקֻ֥מוּ וַ/יֵּלְכ֖וּ בַּ/לַּ֥יְלָה הַ/הֽוּא
